Book Making Sense of Life Stages the Workplace and Tmi

Download or read book Making Sense of Life Stages the Workplace and Tmi written by Cynthia C. J. Shoemaker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a model for making sense of the Information Age and too much information in the workplace and in life stages. The Sensemaking Flow Charts for handling Too Much Information and selecting alternatives are a sorting-out approach that has been used in corporations and can also be applied to government agencies and military services seeking to better use information technology to find innovative approaches for problems and for new definitions of problems. Popular author Thomas Friedman states that something big has happened in the worlds wiring in the last ten years, but it was obscured by the financial crisis and 9/11. We went from a connected world to a hyperconnected world. He stated that Facebook, Twitter, 4G-5G, Smart Phones, iPads, ubiquitous wireless and the cloud, big data, cellphone apps and Skype did not exist or were in their infancy a decade ago (in Forbes, May 2013). Making Sense of this and more is ones 21st Century task. Hopefully overtime, some of the dilemmas and chaos discussed in the corporate, government and Defense Department chapters here will have been addressed and resolved. Looking back in hindsight allows one to see possibilities that presented themselves, even more clearly. Applying the Making Sense Flow Chart to various known and difficult stages in the growing to adulthood years also was helpful to parents and to older children in the transition stages appearing in child and young adult development. The charts for the transition age stages in todays world with information overload appear at the beginning of each chapter. The response to each chart by readers has been This has been very helpful.

Book Stages of Agency

Download or read book Stages of Agency written by Astrid Haas and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Stages of Agency' is the first monograph to analyze the contributions of American stage drama to the discourse on AIDS in the United States from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s. This discourse provides a telling example of how the arts can become agents in socio-political debates. As the study shows, theater and drama played a unique role in educating the American public about AIDS, offering support for the sick and the grieving, and intervening in the mainstream societal perceptions and representations of the epidemic. Taking some of the best-known American AIDS plays as exemplary case studies, 'Stages of Agency' maps the diachronic development of this body of work in its increasing thematic, formal, and identity political heterogeneity. The study analyzes the strategies these plays employed to blend art with activism in order to establish a counter-discourse to the mainstream public debate about AIDS and provide social agency to the affected populations.

Book A Japanese Approach to Stages of Capitalist Development

Download or read book A Japanese Approach to Stages of Capitalist Development written by Robert Albritton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a novel treatment of one of the most important and long-standing research agendas in critical political economy: the theorizing of stages of capitalist development. Albritton advances the work of Japanese economist, Kozo Uno, to explore capital accumulation and its ideological, legal and political supports, not only in the stages of mercantilism, liberalism and imperialism, but also in the post-World War II capitalist stage of consumerism. The power of Albritton’s adoption of this Japanese approach resides in the crisp clarity it achieves over the way stage theorizing of capitalism draws on both economic theory and historical analysis. In the new, fully revised edition, written with Richard Westra, two new chapters are added. One meticulously examines the tendencies of capitalism euphemized as globalization and financialization which followed the crisis of the stage of consumerism. The other deals with current threats to civilization posed by burgeoning militarism, environmental destruction and climate apocalypse. The concluding chapter argues for the necessity of major social change to ensure a liveable future for humanity. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of political economy and the history of economic thought, as well as a wider audience interested in the transformation and crises of capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women played an integral role in the theater of the Antebellum and Civil War South. Yet their contributions have largely been overlooked by history. Southern actresses were important public figures who helped mold gender identity through their theatrical performances. Although cast in parts written by men, they subverted the norms of femininity in their public personas and in their personal lives. Educated and often wealthy but never accepted by the landed elite, women distinguished themselves by carving out an in-between class status, and many proved to be sophisticated entrepreneurs. Southern actresses also helped shape racial perceptions and regional politics as the South entered the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who determines the fuel standards for our cars? What about whether Plan B, the morning-after pill, is sold at the local pharmacy? Many people assume such important and controversial policy decisions originate in the halls of Congress. But the choreographed actions of Congress and the president account for only a small portion of the laws created in the United States. By some estimates, more than ninety percent of law is created by administrative rules issued by federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services, where unelected bureaucrats with particular policy goals and preferences respond to the incentives created by a complex, procedure-bound rulemaking process. With Bending the Rules, Rachel Augustine Potter shows that rulemaking is not the rote administrative activity it is commonly imagined to be but rather an intensely political activity in its own right. Because rulemaking occurs in a separation of powers system, bureaucrats are not free to implement their preferred policies unimpeded: the president, Congress, and the courts can all get involved in the process, often at the bidding of affected interest groups. However, rather than capitulating to demands, bureaucrats routinely employ “procedural politicking,” using their deep knowledge of the process to strategically insulate their proposals from political scrutiny and interference. Tracing the rulemaking process from when an agency first begins working on a rule to when it completes that regulatory action, Potter shows how bureaucrats use procedures to resist interference from Congress, the President, and the courts at each stage of the process. This exercise reveals that unelected bureaucrats wield considerable influence over the direction of public policy in the United States.
