Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and ultimately the fragility of human existence. “A magical, metaphysical realm ... Captivating, enchanting, delightful.” —The New York Times Einstein’s Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, about time, relativity and physics. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, so that people are fated to repeat triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children. In another, time is a nightingale, sometimes trapped by a bell jar. Now translated into thirty languages, Einstein’s Dreams has inspired playwrights, dancers, musicians, and painters all over the world. In poetic vignettes, it explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and ultimately the fragility of human existence.

Book Barrio Dreams

    Book Details:
  • Author : Silviana Wood
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2016-05-12
  • ISBN : 0816533849
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Barrio Dreams written by Silviana Wood and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the advent of Chicano teatro, dozens of groups sprang up across the country in Chicano/a communities. Since then, teatristas have been leading voices in the creation and production of plays touching minds and hearts that galvanize audiences to action. Barrio Dreams is the first book to collect the work of one of Arizona’s foremost teatristas, playwright Silviana Wood. During her decades-long involvement in theater, Wood forged a reputation as a playwright, actor, director, and activist. Her works form a testimonio of Chicana life, steeped in art, politics, and the borderlands. Wood’s plays challenge, question, and incite women to consider their lot in life. She ruptures stereotypes and raises awareness of social issues via humor and with an emphasis on the use of the physical body on stage. The play Una vez, en un barrio de sueños . . . offers a glimpse into familiar terrain—the barrio and its dwellers—in three actos. In Amor de hija, a fraught mother-daughter relationship in contemporary working-class Arizona is dealt an additional blow as the family faces Alzheimer’s disease. In the tragedy A Drunkard’s Tale of Melted Wings and Memories, and in the trilingual (Spanish, English, and Yaqui) tragicomedy Yo, Casimiro Flores, characters love, live, die, travel through time and space, and visit the afterlife. And in Anhelos por Oaxaca, a grandfather travels back in time through flashbacks, as he and his grandson travel through homelands from Arizona to Oaxaca. Part of Wood’s genius is the way she portrays life in what Gloria Anzaldúa called “el mundo zurdo,” that space inhabited by the people of color, the poor, the female, and the outsiders. It is a place for the atravesados, the odd, the different, those who do not fit the mainstream. The people who inhabit Wood’s plays are common folk—janitors, mothers, grandmothers, and teenagers—hardworking people who, in one way or another, have made their way in life and who embody life in the barrio.

Book You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams

Download or read book You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams written by Alan Cumming and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magical concoction of the mischievous, tender, whimsical, and debauched real-life adventures of Alan Cumming, told in his own words and pictures. Described by the New York Times as “a bawdy countercultural sprite” and named one of the most fun people in show business by Time magazine, Alan Cumming is a genuine quadruple threat—an internationally acclaimed, award-winning star of stage, television, and film, as well as a New York Times best-selling author whose real-life vivacity, wit, and charm shine through every page of his third book, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. In these forty-five picture essays, Cumming recounts his real-life adventures (and often, misadventures), illustrated by his own equally entertaining photographs. From an awkward bonding session with Elizabeth Taylor to poignant stories about his family and friends to some harsh words of wisdom imparted by Oprah that make up the title of this collection, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams is as eclectic, enchanting, and alive as its author.

Book Seven Kine Fatfleshed A Theory Of Sleep And Dreams

Download or read book Seven Kine Fatfleshed A Theory Of Sleep And Dreams written by Simeon Locke and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title (Genesis XLI :18) of the book indicates, interest in dreams goes back at least to Biblical times. It persisted during subsequent years to peak in the 20th century following publication of Sigmund Freud’s major work “The Interpretation of Dreams”. Freud was concerned with the psychology of dreams perhaps because biological science of that era was not ready to provide physiological explanation of the purpose of dreams. Much neuroscience has been discovered in the century since Freud to permit a new view of sleep and dreams. A great deal has been learned about the “what “of sleep: its stages, electrographic accompaniment, eye movements, muscle atonia and behavioral manifestations. There are ideas about the “why” of sleep: restorative processes, protein synthesis, secretion of growth hormone, clearing of adenosine, immunologic enhancement and consolidation of memory. Only a little is known of the “what” of dreams: cerebral areas that are activated and deactivated on imaging studies, cerebral lesions that cause loss of dreaming and a bit about ontogenesis. The “why” of dreams remains uncertain. In this brief monograph, Dr. Locke offers a bold new hypothesis about the purpose of the dream. Following chapters on sleep, memory and the structure of the dream he suggests that one function of sleep and dreams is to establish neurological cellular networks to accept new memories. The muscle atonia of REM sleep deactivates neural networks in motor cortex, cerebellum and basal ganglia to allow them to accept new motor algorithms of procedural memory. The structure of the transient and preparatory dream – its narrative and imagery – is selected during REM sleep by a largely inhibited hippocampus that permits only incomplete retrieval of neural assemblies accounting for the distortion, condensation, fusion and confusion of the dream. New neural assemblies are activated in parietal cortex by dreams that are promptly forgotten to allow the unoccupied network, held in readiness by snaptic tags, to accept new declarative memories in the waking state of the new day.

The main focus is to describe the phenomenology of dreams. What are the common features of dreaming with regard to images, thoughts, and emotions? Book Dreams in Group Psychotherapy

Download or read book Dreams in Group Psychotherapy written by Robi Friedman and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2002-07-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams told in the group are conjoint individual and group creations. They are both influenced by the group atmosphere and may in turn influence it and the individual, promoting change and development. Dreams have a deepening effect on therapeutic work and, due to their unconscious content, they may represent the most authentic exchange between individual and group. This state-of-the-art book provides help for therapists encountering a dream told in their group. It covers the major theoretical perspectives for their understanding, as well as representing different psychological schools and their approaches to the technical issues of group dream therapy. Despite the variety of sources, the clinical approaches described complement each other, and the book details many case studies, including a first dream in the group, an unconscious meeting between women and men, and other polarities within the individual and the group.
