Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of CONCURRENCY 88, an international conference on formal methods for distributed systems, held October 18-19, 1988 in Hamburg. CONCURRENCY 88 responded to great interest in the field of formal methods as a means of mastering the complexity of distributed systems. In addition, the impulse was determined by the fact that the various methodological approaches, such as constructive or property oriented methods, have not had an extensive comparative analysis nor have they been investigated with respect to their possible integration and their practical implications. The following topics were addressed: Specification Languages, Models for Distributed Systems, Verification and Validation, Knowledge Based Protocol Modeling, Fault Tolerance, Distributed Databases. The volume contains 12 invited papers and 14 contributions selected by the program committee. They were presented by authors from Austria, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

  • ISBN : 9783540190219
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book CAAP 88 written by Max Dauchet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-03-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 13th Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP '88), held in Nancy, March 21-24, 1988. The preceding 12 colloquia were held in France, Italy and Germany. CAAP '85 and CAAP '87 were integrated into the International Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software Development, TAPSOFT (see Lecture Notes in Computer Science volumes 185 and 249). As another effort to link theory and practice in computer science, CAAP '88 was held in conjunction with the European Symposium on Programming, ESOP '88 (see volume 300 of this Lecture Notes series). CAAP '88 is a conference in the area of program development and programming concepts but, following the tradition, is devoted to theoretical aspects, and especially to Trees, a basic structure of computer science. A wider range of topics in theoretical computer science is also covered. The papers are on word, tree or graph languages, with algorithmic or complexity studies, on abstract data types (another classical topic of CAAP) and/or term rewriting systems and on non-standard logics, and parallelism and concurrency.

Book Compositionality Concurrency and Partial Correctness

Download or read book Compositionality Concurrency and Partial Correctness written by Job Zwiers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-02-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hierarchical decomposition of programs into smaller ones is generally considered imperative to master the complexity of large programs. The impact of this principle of program decomposition on the specification and verification of parallel executed programs is the subject of this monograph. Two important yardsticks for verification methods, those of compositionality and modularity, are made precise. The problem of reusing software is addressed by the introduction of the notion of specification adaptation. Within this context, different methods for specifying the observable behavior with respect to partial correctness of communicating processes are considered, and in particular the contrast between the "programs are predicates" and the "programs are predicate transformers" paradigms is shown. The associated formal proof systems are proven sound and complete in various senses with respect to the denotational semantics of the programming language, and they are related to each other to give an in-depth comparison between the different styles of program verification. The programming language TNP used here is near to actual languages like Occam. It combines CCS/CSP style communication based programming with state based programming, and allows dynamically expanding and shrinking networks of processes.

Book High Performance Transaction Systems

Download or read book High Performance Transaction Systems written by Dieter Gawlick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-04-26 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Lecture Notes volume is based on the "International Workshop on High Performance Transaction Systems" held in the Asilomar Conference Center, September 28-30, 1987. Many of the problems identified during the workshop are liable to determine the future development of transaction systems and distributed high performance systems in general for many years to come. So the organizers of HPTS '87 felt encouraged to collect the papers presented at the workshop in order to make them accessible to a wider audience of interested developers and researchers. Since some of the contributions represented work in progress, the authors agreed to prepare revised and updated versions of their papers for this publication. This accounts for the long delay between the event itself and the publication, but on the other hand it provides the reader with a state-of-the-art account of transaction processing topics. The book is organized according to the major sections of the workshop. In the network section the reader finds an analysis of two of the major "paradigms" in networking, ISO/OSI and SNA, from the perspective of transaction processing. In the next section four different transaction processing and database systems are described: Model 204 - a database management system marketed by Computer Corporation of America, Tandem's NonStop SQL, Citicorp's transaction processing system and ALCS, which basically is a version of TPF running under MVS/XA. The section on architectural issues contains four very different contributions which are fairly representative of the type of problems in transaction systems investigated in the research community. Finally, performance evaluations and system comparisons are presented.

Book Handbook of Formal Languages

Download or read book Handbook of Formal Languages written by Grzegorz Rozenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a comprehensive survey-type exposition on formal languages and related mainstream areas of computer science has been evident for some years. In the early 1970s, when . the book Formal Languages by the second mentioned editor appeared, it was still quite feasible to write a comprehensive book with that title and include also topics of current research interest. This would not be possible anymore. A standard-sized book on formal languages would either have to stay on a fairly low level or else be specialized and restricted to some narrow sector of the field. The setup becomes drastically different in a collection of contributions, where the best authorities in the world join forces, each of them concentrat ing on their own areas of specialization. The present three-volume Handbook constitutes such a unique collection. In these three volumes we present the current state of the art in formal language theory. We were most satisfied with the enthusiastic response given to our request for contributions by specialists representing various subfields. The need for a Handbook of Formal Languages was in many answers expressed in different ways: as an easily accessible his torical reference, a general source of information, an overall course-aid, and a compact collection of material for self-study. We are convinced that the final result will satisfy such various needs. The theory of formal languages constitutes the stem or backbone of the field of science now generally known as theoretical computer science.

Book Mathematics in Berlin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heinrich Begehr
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 1998-07-21
  • ISBN : 9783764359430
  • Pages : 1840 pages

Download or read book Mathematics in Berlin written by Heinrich Begehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-21 with total page 1840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book is conceived as a service to mathematicians attending the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. It presents a comprehensive, condensed overview of mathematical activity in Berlin, from Leibniz almost to the present day (without, however, including biographies of living mathematicians). Since many towering figures in mathematical history worked in Berlin, most of the chapters of this book are concise biographies. These are held together by a few survey articles presenting the overall development of entire periods of scientific life at Berlin. Overlaps between various chapters and differences in style between the chap ters were inevitable, but sometimes this provided opportunities to show different aspects of a single historical event - for instance, the Kronecker-Weierstrass con troversy. The book aims at readability rather than scholarly completeness. There are no footnotes, only references to the individual bibliographies of each chapter. Still, we do hope that the texts brought together here, and written by the various authors for this volume, constitute a solid introduction to the history of Berlin mathematics.
