Book excerpt: Asymptotic properties of solutions such as stability/ instability,oscillation/ nonoscillation, existence of solutions with specific asymptotics, maximum principles present a classical part in the theory of higher order functional differential equations. The use of these equations in applications is one of the main reasons for the developments in this field. The control in the mechanical processes leads to mathematical models with second order delay differential equations. Stability and stabilization of second order delay equations are one of the main goals of this book. The book is based on the authors’ results in the last decade. Book Theory of Third Order Differential Equations

Download or read book Theory of Third Order Differential Equations written by Seshadev Padhi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the theory of third-order differential equations. Most of the results are derived from the results obtained for third-order linear homogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients. M. Gregus, in his book written in 1987, only deals with third-order linear differential equations. These findings are old, and new techniques have since been developed and new results obtained. Chapter 1 introduces the results for oscillation and non-oscillation of solutions of third-order linear differential equations with constant coefficients, and a brief introduction to delay differential equations is given. The oscillation and asymptotic behavior of non-oscillatory solutions of homogeneous third-order linear differential equations with variable coefficients are discussed in Ch. 2. The results are extended to third-order linear non-homogeneous equations in Ch. 3, while Ch. 4 explains the oscillation and non-oscillation results for homogeneous third-order nonlinear differential equations. Chapter 5 deals with the z-type oscillation and non-oscillation of third-order nonlinear and non-homogeneous differential equations. Chapter 6 is devoted to the study of third-order delay differential equations. Chapter 7 explains the stability of solutions of third-order equations. Some knowledge of differential equations, analysis and algebra is desirable, but not essential, in order to study the topic.

Book Stability of Vector Differential Delay Equations

Download or read book Stability of Vector Differential Delay Equations written by Michael I. Gil’ and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential equations with delay naturally arise in various applications, such as control systems, viscoelasticity, mechanics, nuclear reactors, distributed networks, heat flows, neural networks, combustion, interaction of species, microbiology, learning models, epidemiology, physiology, and many others. This book systematically investigates the stability of linear as well as nonlinear vector differential equations with delay and equations with causal mappings. It presents explicit conditions for exponential, absolute and input-to-state stabilities. These stability conditions are mainly formulated in terms of the determinants and eigenvalues of auxiliary matrices dependent on a parameter; the suggested approach allows us to apply the well-known results of the theory of matrices. In addition, solution estimates for the considered equations are established which provide the bounds for regions of attraction of steady states. The main methodology presented in the book is based on a combined usage of the recent norm estimates for matrix-valued functions and the following methods and results: the generalized Bohl-Perron principle and the integral version of the generalized Bohl-Perron principle; the freezing method; the positivity of fundamental solutions. A significant part of the book is devoted to the Aizerman-Myshkis problem and generalized Hill theory of periodic systems. The book is intended not only for specialists in the theory of functional differential equations and control theory, but also for anyone with a sound mathematical background interested in their various applications.

Book Numerical Methods for Delay Differential Equations

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Delay Differential Equations written by Alfredo Bellen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the book is to introduce the readers to the numerical integration of the Cauchy problem for delay differential equations (DDEs). Peculiarities and differences that DDEs exhibit with respect to ordinary differential equations are preliminarily outlined by numerous examples illustrating some unexpected, and often surprising, behaviours of the analytical and numerical solutions. The effect of various kinds of delays on the regularity of the solution is described and some essential existence and uniqueness results are reported. The book is centered on the use of Runge-Kutta methods continuously extended by polynomial interpolation, includes a brief review of the various approaches existing in the literature, and develops an exhaustive error and well-posedness analysis for the general classes of one-step and multistep methods. The book presents a comprehensive development of continuous extensions of Runge-Kutta methods which are of interest also in the numerical treatment of more general problems such as dense output, discontinuous equations, etc. Some deeper insight into convergence and superconvergence of continuous Runge-Kutta methods is carried out for DDEs with various kinds of delays. The stepsize control mechanism is also developed on a firm mathematical basis relying on the discrete and continuous local error estimates. Classical results and a unconventional analysis of "stability with respect to forcing term" is reviewed for ordinary differential equations in view of the subsequent numerical stability analysis. Moreover, an exhaustive description of stability domains for some test DDEs is carried out and the corresponding stability requirements for the numerical methods are assessed and investigated. Alternative approaches, based on suitable formulation of DDEs as partial differential equations and subsequent semidiscretization are briefly described and compared with the classical approach. A list of available codes is provided, and illustrative examples, pseudo-codes and numerical experiments are included throughout the book.

Book Functional Differential Equations Proceedings Of The International Symposium

Download or read book Functional Differential Equations Proceedings Of The International Symposium written by T Yoshizawa and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-04-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privacy is an unwieldy concept that has eluded an essentialised definition despite its centrality and importance in the body of bioethics. The compilation presented in this volume represents continuing discussions on the theme of privacy in the context of genetic information. It is intended to present a wide range of expert opinion in which the notion of privacy is examined from many perspectives, in different contexts and imperatives, and in different societies, with the hope of advancing an understanding of privacy through the examination and critique of some of its evolving component concepts such as notions of what constitute the personal, the context of privacy, the significance and impact of the relational interests of others who may share the same genetic inheritance, and mechanisms for the protection of privacy (as well as of their limitations), among others. More specifically, the discussions in this volume encourages us to think broadly about privacy, as encompassing values that are entailed in the sociality of context and of relations, and also as freedom from illegitimate and excessive surveillance. A long-standing question that continues to challenge us is whether genetic information should be regarded as exceptional, as it is often perceived. A conclusion that could be derived from this volume is that while genetic information may be significant, it is not exceptionally so. The work presented in this volume underlines the continuing and growing relevance of notions of privacy to genomic science, and the need to take ownership of a genetic privacy for the future through broad, rigorous and open discussion.Contributors: Alastair V Campbell, Benjamin Capps, Jacqueline JL Chin, Oi Lian Kon, Kenji Matsui, Thomas H Murray, Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, Dianne Nicol, Anh Tuan Nuyen, Onora O'Neill, Margaret Otlowski, Yvette van der Eijk, Chunshui Wang, Ross S White.

Book Functional Differential Equations with Infinite Delay

Download or read book Functional Differential Equations with Infinite Delay written by Yoshiyuki Hino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the theory of functional differential equations with infinite delay, there are several ways to choose the space of initial functions (phase space); and diverse (duplicated) theories arise, according to the choice of phase space. To unify the theories, an axiomatic approach has been taken since the 1960's. This book is intended as a guide for the axiomatic approach to the theory of equations with infinite delay and a culmination of the results obtained in this way. It can also be used as a textbook for a graduate course. The prerequisite knowledge is foundations of analysis including linear algebra and functional analysis. It is hoped that the book will prepare students for further study of this area, and that will serve as a ready reference to the researchers in applied analysis and engineering sciences.

Book Stability Control and Computation for Time Delay Systems

Download or read book Stability Control and Computation for Time Delay Systems written by Wim Michiels and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time delays are important components of many systems in, for instance, engineering, physics, economics, and the life sciences, because the transfer of material, energy, and information is usually not instantaneous. Time delays may appear as computation and communication lags, they model transport phenomena and heredity, and they arise as feedback delays in control loops. This monograph addresses the problem of stability analysis, stabilization, and robust fixed-order control of dynamical systems subject to delays, including both retarded- and neutral-type systems. Within the eigenvalue-based framework, an overall solution is given to the stability analysis, stabilization, and robust control design problem, using both analytical methods and numerical algorithms and applicable to a broad class of linear time-delay systems.? In this revised edition, the authors make the leap from stabilization to the design of robust and optimal controllers and from retarded-type to neutral-type delay systems, thus enlarging the scope of the book within control; include new, state-of-the-art material on numerical methods and algorithms to broaden the book?s focus and to reach additional research communities, in particular numerical linear algebra and numerical optimization; and increase the number and range of applications to better illustrate the effectiveness and generality of their approach.?
