Book Effects of Aerodynamic Angular Rate Nonlinearities on Missile Dynamic Stability

Download or read book Effects of Aerodynamic Angular Rate Nonlinearities on Missile Dynamic Stability written by Thomas A. Clare and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of aerodynamic damping coefficients nonlinear with angular velocity on the dynamic stability of statically stable configurations of symmetric missiles are investigated analytically and verified via numerical simulations. In particular, the simplest mode of oscillation, single degree of freedom pitching motion, is considered including a restoring moment nonlinear with angle of attack and a damping moment nonlinear with both angle of attack and angular velocity. Averaging methods are used to obtain an approximate expression for the frequency and amplitude variations with time. It is noted that the internal mass distribution (moment of inertia) can be a critical factor in the interpretation of dynamic stability characteristics from single degree of freedom wind tunnel tests, especially when employing light-weight models. Book On the Free Flight Motion of Missiles Having Slight Configurational Asymmetries

Download or read book On the Free Flight Motion of Missiles Having Slight Configurational Asymmetries written by John Dudley Nicolaides and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theories for the free fligbt motion of miseiles, as generally considered by the aerodynamicist and the ballistician, are combined to yield a single theory for the basically symmetrical missile. The force and moment system contains not only the usual aerodynamic forces and moments but also the effects of slight configurational asymmetries and the effects of rolling velocity. The theory yields the condition for the dynamic stability of both statically stable and statically unstable missiles, and alco predicts that the presence of configurational asynnetries together with rolling velocity may result in resonance instability. Numerical integrations of the differential equations for the pitching and yawing motion are carried cut for three variations in the rolling motion. The results indicate that the rapidity of passage through the resonance region is a significant factor affecting the nagnitude of the pitch and yaw of the missile. rWo models of a simple arrow type missile having control surface deflection are gun launched at supersonic velocity in the Aberdeen Spark Photography Range and the free flight pitching and yawing motion and the transverse displacement are measured. The tricyclic theory is fitted to the experimental data. The results indicate tbat the theory accurately represent. the actual motion of the two models and that the associated static and dynamic aerodyamic derivatives are accurately determined.

Book Planar Limit Motion of Nonspinning Symmetric Missiles Acted on by Cubic Aerodynamic Moments

Download or read book Planar Limit Motion of Nonspinning Symmetric Missiles Acted on by Cubic Aerodynamic Moments written by Charles H. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN Ballistic Research Laboratories rept. no. 1114 (AD-247 271) the nonlinear motion of symmetric missiles was analyzed by means of a perturbation technique. Owing to the algebraic complexity of this technique, it was only applied to the relatively simple problem of nearly circular motion. This report shows that the planar motion of nonspinning symmetric missiles possesses similar algebraic simplicity. The influence of various cubic static and damping moments is investigated in detail. Planar limit oscillations about a trim angle are found to exist under certain conditions. Finally, the analysis is combined with the almost circular motion analysis of BRL report no. 1114 to determine the basic features of the complete generalized amplitude plane. (Author).

Book Symmetric Missile Dynamic Instabilities A Review

Download or read book Symmetric Missile Dynamic Instabilities A Review written by Charles H. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic instabilities observed for symmetric missiles and projectiles arise from a large variety of causes. These include unstable linear damping moments, and different nonlinear in-plane and out-of-plane damping moments for non spinning re-entry vehicles, nonlinear Magnus moments for spinning missiles, and internal resonance with moving payload components. If aerodynamic trim is present, linear spin-yaw resonance can occur as well as nonlinear subharmonic motions and a number of other limit motions. This report gives a complete survey of these possibilities with a number of actual case histories.

Book Free Flight Motion of Symmetric Missiles

Download or read book Free Flight Motion of Symmetric Missiles written by Charles H. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linearized angular motion of a symmetric missile is developed in some detail with some consideration of the rolling motion, drag, aerodynamic jump and the effect of varying coefficients. The tricyclic motion of a missile with misaligned control surfaces in briefly considered. This linear theory is, then, applied to the analysis of ballistic range data. Next, simple cubic nonlinearities in static moment and Magnus moment are treated by a quasi-linear analysis and these cubic coefficients obtained from ballistic range flight data. More generalized relations for arbitrary symmetric nonlinear terms are derived and their use in the construction of "amplitude" planes indicated. These amplitude planes have proven to be quite useful for the prediction of missile flight performance. Finally, the influence of strongly nonlinear static moments is determined by a perturbation method which makes use of two quasi-constants of the motion--total energy and angular momentum.
