Book Three Dimensional Structure of Boundary Layers in Transition to Turbulence

Download or read book Three Dimensional Structure of Boundary Layers in Transition to Turbulence written by Thorwald Herbert and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectral code for linear stability analysis has been developed that allows easy adaptation to a large variety of basic flows and stability equations. This code is the basis for extensions to analyze secondary and nonlinear stability in parallel and nonparallel flows. Improved numerical techniques have been developed to reduce the computational demand of secondary instability studies. A new approach to convective instability analysis in nonparallel flows on the basis of parabolized stability equations has been developed for incompressible and compressible flows. Encouraging results have been obtained in the areas of linear, nonlinear, and secondary instability. The code appears as a viable alternative to DNS codes that allows transition simulations at a small fraction of the computational cost. Keywords: Transition; Boundary layers; Stability. (jhd).

Book Small Viscosity and Boundary Layer Methods

Download or read book Small Viscosity and Boundary Layer Methods written by Guy Métivier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Metivier is an expert in the field of pdes/math physics, with a particular emphasis on shock waves. * New monograph focuses on mathematical methods, models, and applications of boundary layers, present in many problems of physics, engineering, fluid mechanics. * Metivier has good Birkhauser track record: one of the main authors of "Advances in the Theory of Shock Waves" (Freistuehler/Szepessy, eds, 4187-4). * Manuscript endorsed by N. Bellomo, MSSET series editor...should be a good sell to members of MSSET community, who by-in-large are based in Europe. * Included are self-contained introductions to different topics such as hyperbolic boundary value problems, parabolic systems, WKB methods, construction of profiles, introduction to the theory of Evans’ functions, and energy methods with Kreiss’ symmetrizers.

Book Stability of a three dimensional boundary layer

Download or read book Stability of a three dimensional boundary layer written by Jeffrey B. Morton and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of a three-dimensional boundary layer on a semi-infinite rotating cylinder at angle of attack in a uniform incompressible flow is studied. The results shed some new light on the behavior of disturbances indicating that inflection-point instability may not dominate. Numerical solution of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation is used to obtain the results and an approximate analytic solution is shown to be in good agreement with the numerical results.

Book The Role of the Zone of Dependence Concept in Three dimensional Boundary layer Calculations

Download or read book The Role of the Zone of Dependence Concept in Three dimensional Boundary layer Calculations written by Clarence W. Kitchens (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject is studied for the general initial-value problem which arises in several applications; e.g., a spinning body at incidence. An exact solution which simulates the essential features of the boundary layer on such a body is used as a test case. The zone of dependence concept places a restriction on the local mesh aspect ratio that may be used. Results from four finite-difference schemes are compared against the exact solution for various wall speeds and mesh aspect ratios. Error growth occurs when the zone of dependence rule is not satisfied. The sensitivity and manner of error growth for the four schemes are different; two of them are relatively insensitive. From stability analyses it is shown that the concepts of stability and zone of dependence are not the same. Our numerical experiments partly contradict the stability analyses.

Book Stability and Transition Analysis for Reentry Tool STAR

Download or read book Stability and Transition Analysis for Reentry Tool STAR written by Helen L. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effort is primarily to accelerate delivery of an improved stability and transition analysis tool. The initial goal is to aid contractors supported under the DARPA FALCON program in the development and test of Common Aero Vehicle (CAV) maneuvering reentry configurations. Under this effort, state-of-the-art computational tools developed for hypersonic boundary layer stability research will be integrated into a user-friendly package (the Stability and Transition Analysis for Reentry tool, STAR). STAR will be based on Parabolized Stability Equation (PSE) solvers, with additional modules to account for crossflow, transient growth, and roughness effects. Previous flight and ground test data will be analyzed for validation and calibration of the new tool, and stability and transition on actual contractor-provided CAV configurations will be analyzed computationally in concert with ground tests of the same configurations.
