Book excerpt: Advances in computer technology have conveniently coincided withtrends in numerical analysis toward increased complexity ofcomputational algorithms based on finite difference methods. It isno longer feasible to perform stability investigation of thesemethods manually--and no longer necessary. Comprehensive, timely, and accessible--this is the definitivereference on the application of computerized symbolic manipulationsfor analyzing the stability of a wide range of difference schemes. In particular, it deals with those schemes that are used to solvecomplex physical problems in areas such as gas dynamics, heat andmass transfer, catastrophe theory, elasticity, shallow watertheory, and more. Introducing many new applications, methods, and concepts,Computer-Aided Analysis of Difference Schemes for PartialDifferential Equations * Shows how computational algebra expedites the task of stabilityanalysis--whatever the approach to stability investigation * Covers ten different approaches for each stability method * Deals with the specific characteristics of each method and itsapplication to problems commonly encountered by numerical modelers * Describes all basic mathematical formulas that are necessary toimplement each algorithm * Provides each formula in several global algebraic symboliclanguages, such as MAPLE, MATHEMATICA, and REDUCE * Includes numerous illustrations and thought-provoking examplesthroughout the text For mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, as well as forpostgraduate students, and for anyone involved with numericsolutions for real-world physical problems, this book provides avaluable resource, a helpful guide, and a head start ondevelopments for the twenty-first century.

Book Fourier Analysis of Numerical Approximations of Hyperbolic Equations

This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a growing interest in the use of Fourier analysis to examine questions of accuracy and stability of numerical methods for solving partial differential equations. This kind of analysis can produce particularly attractive and useful results for hyperbolic equations. This book provides useful reference material for those concerned with computational fluid dynamics: for physicists and engineers who work with computers in the analysis of problems in such diverse fields as hydraulics, gas dynamics, plasma physics, numerical weather prediction, and transport processes in engineering, and who need to understand the implications of the approximations they use; and for applied mathematicians concerned with the more theoretical aspects of these computations.

Book High order finite difference approximations for hyperbolic problems

Download or read book High order finite difference approximations for hyperbolic problems written by Hannes Frenander and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we use finite difference operators with the Summation-By-Partsproperty (SBP) and a weak boundary treatment, known as SimultaneousApproximation Terms (SAT), to construct high-order accurate numerical schemes. The SBP property and the SAT’s makes the schemes provably stable. The numerical procedure is general, and can be applied to most problems, but we focus on hyperbolic problems such as the shallow water, Euler and wave equations. For a well-posed problem and a stable numerical scheme, data must be available at the boundaries of the domain. However, there are many scenarios where additional information is available inside the computational domain. In termsof well-posedness and stability, the additional information is redundant, but it can still be used to improve the performance of the numerical scheme. As a first contribution, we introduce a procedure for implementing additional data using SAT’s; we call the procedure the Multiple Penalty Technique (MPT). A stable and accurate scheme augmented with the MPT remains stable and accurate. Moreover, the MPT introduces free parameters that can be used to increase the accuracy, construct absorbing boundary layers, increase the rate of convergence and control the error growth in time. To model infinite physical domains, one need transparent artificial boundary conditions, often referred to as Non-Reflecting Boundary Conditions (NRBC). In general, constructing and implementing such boundary conditions is a difficult task that often requires various approximations of the frequency and range of incident angles of the incoming waves. In the second contribution of this thesis,we show how to construct NRBC’s by using SBP operators in time. In the final contribution of this thesis, we investigate long time error bounds for the wave equation on second order form. Upper bounds for the spatial and temporal derivatives of the error can be obtained, but not for the actual error. The theoretical results indicate that the error grows linearly in time. However, the numerical experiments show that the error is in fact bounded, and consequently that the derived error bounds are probably suboptimal.

Book Finite Difference Methods for Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Finite Difference Methods for Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations written by Randall J. LeVeque and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces finite difference methods for both ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) and discusses the similarities and differences between algorithm design and stability analysis for different types of equations. A unified view of stability theory for ODEs and PDEs is presented, and the interplay between ODE and PDE analysis is stressed. The text emphasizes standard classical methods, but several newer approaches also are introduced and are described in the context of simple motivating examples.

Book Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

Download or read book Discontinuous Galerkin Methods written by Bernardo Cockburn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of finite element methods, the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods (DGM), has been under rapid development recently and has found its use very quickly in such diverse applications as aeroacoustics, semi-conductor device simula tion, turbomachinery, turbulent flows, materials processing, MHD and plasma simulations, and image processing. While there has been a lot of interest from mathematicians, physicists and engineers in DGM, only scattered information is available and there has been no prior effort in organizing and publishing the existing volume of knowledge on this subject. In May 24-26, 1999 we organized in Newport (Rhode Island, USA), the first international symposium on DGM with equal emphasis on the theory, numerical implementation, and applications. Eighteen invited speakers, lead ers in the field, and thirty-two contributors presented various aspects and addressed open issues on DGM. In this volume we include forty-nine papers presented in the Symposium as well as a survey paper written by the organiz ers. All papers were peer-reviewed. A summary of these papers is included in the survey paper, which also provides a historical perspective of the evolution of DGM and its relation to other numerical methods. We hope this volume will become a major reference in this topic. It is intended for students and researchers who work in theory and application of numerical solution of convection dominated partial differential equations. The papers were written with the assumption that the reader has some knowledge of classical finite elements and finite volume methods.
