Der Grund für diese Aufregung lag darin, dass der Gesetzesentwurf eine generelle Tolerierung der doppelten Staatsangehörigkeit vorsah. Die Bevölkerung, wie auch die Parteien, waren geteilt in Gegner und Befür-worter. Über eines scheinen sich jedoch alle einig: Hier lebende Ausländer sollen besser integriert werden und neue Bewerber sollen bürokratisch gesehen schneller die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit bekommen. Doch wird Deutschland mit der doppelten Staatsbürgerschaft endlich seiner Rolle als Einwanderungsland gerecht? Dieser Frage möchte ich in dieser Seminararbeit nachgehen, wozu zunächst einmal dargestellt werden soll, dass Deutschland überhaupt ein Einwanderungsland ist. Danach werde ich auf das bisherige Verfahren zur Einbürgerung einen kurzen Überblick geben. Speziell das alte System der Staatsangehörigkeitsvergabe, das vor dem 1.1.2000 galt, soll hierin berücksichtigt werden. Danach werde ich auf das neue Staatsangehörigkeitssystem vom 1.1.2000 eingehen und seine wichtigsten Punkte darstellen. Auch werden die Probleme der doppelten Staatsbürgerschaft dargestellt. Zuletzt komme ich auf die EU-Bürgerschaft zu sprechen. Ziel hierbei ist es zu untersuchen, ob die EU-Angehörigkeit eines Tages die nationale Staatsangehörigkeit ablösen kann, da aufgrund der EU Entwicklung nationale Grenzen an Wert verlieren.

Wanderbewegungen von Menschen oder Gruppen, die ihren bisherigen Wohnsitz längerfristig wechseln und dabei in ein anderes Land ziehen oder wieder in ihr Herkunftsland zurückkehren“ (Meier-Braun 2002: Einleitung). Nun ist die Frage auch mit diesem Zitat noch nicht geklärt. Es gibt etliche Begründungen, Deutschland sei ein Einwanderungsland, was sich im Folgenden zeigen wird. Insbesondere die statistischen Daten deuten darauf hin. Im Folgenden werde ich darauf hin arbeiten, die Meinungen etlicher Forscher, Statistiken und auch historische Ereignisse mit einzubeziehen, um zur Antwort zu gelangen. In meiner schriftlichen Ausarbeitung geht es nun darum zu untersuchen, ob die Frage „Deutschland – ein Einwanderungsland?“ bloß eine Suggestivfrage ist, die mit „ja“ oder mit „nein“ beantwortet werden kann oder ob es ein noch nicht abgeschlossenes Terrain ist.

In a world with rising rates of trans-national migration, however, the possibility of participation, belonging, and loyalty to more than one state is ever more evident. This has led to a rethinking of the notion of nation-based citizenship and increased tolerance toward holding citizenship in more than one country. In practice, over half of the world’s nation-states currently recognize some form of dual citizenship or dual nationality. This book focuses on clarifying and comparing how the rules of acquisition, maintenance, and revocation of dual citizenship have been modified and justified in eight states associated with the European Union: Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. The main question is: How have the rules of attribution, loss and/or acquisition of dual citizenship been modified and justified in these eight states? Viewed in the context of international covenants, legislation regarding dual and multiple citizenship is analyzed in terms of how it is made tangible in juridical, social, cultural, and educational domains.

Labor Movement suggests that the international migration of workers is necessary for the survival of industrialized economies. The book thus turns the conventional view of international migration on its head: it investigates how migration regulates labor markets, rather than labor markets shaping migration flows. Assuming a critical view of orthodox economic theory, the book illustrates how different legal, social and cultural strategies towards international migrants are deployed and coordinated within the wider neo-liberal project to render migrants and immigrants vulnerable, pushing them into performing distinct economic roles and into subordinate labor market situations. Drawing on social theories associated with Pierre Bourdieu and other prominent thinkers, Labor Movement suggests that migration regulates labor markets through processes of social distinction, cultural judgement and the strategic deployment of citizenship. European and North American case studies illustrate how the labor of international migrants is systematically devalued and how popular discourse legitimates the demotion of migrants to subordinate labor. Engaging with various immigrant groups in different cities, including South Asian immigrants in Vancouver, foreigners and Spätaussiedler in Berlin, and Mexican and Caribbean offshore workers in rural Ontario, the studies seek to unravel the complex web of regulatory labor market processes related to international migration. Recognizing and understanding these processes, Bauder argues, is an important step towards building effective activist strategies and for envisioning new roles for migrating workers and people. The book is a valuable resource to researchers and students in economics, ethnic and migration studies, geography, sociology, political science, and to frontline activists in Europe, North America and beyond.

The euphoria that attended the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism has been compromised by tragic events in recent years, such as the bitter ethnic rivalries in Yugoslavia, the civil war in Rwanda, and the terrorist bombings in New York City and Oklahoma City. In Search of Germany seeks to accomplish three purposes: to initiate a review of the whole of the post-World War II period and consider what actually happened in the Federal Republic and in the German Democratic Republic during those forty years; to acknowledge that the present "age of anxiety" did not originate in 1989; and to see that Europe today is indeed in trouble and the difficulties that the world is experiencing have social, political, and intellectual roots. In Search of Germany is an augmented and enlarged collection derived from a special issue of Daedalus. Additions that have been made to the book include a chapter by Timothy Garton Ash entitled "Germany's Choice," a concluding section by the editors, and an index. While the book focuses on Germany, it serves a wider purpose as well by also studying Europe, democracy, and modernity.
