Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant, disturbing study of anorexic behavior amongst medieval Italian female saints . . . original, controversial, superbly executed.” —Kirkus Reviews Is there a resemblance between the contemporary anorexic teenager counting every calorie in her single-minded pursuit of thinness, and an ascetic medieval saint examining her every desire? Rudolph M. Bell suggests that the answer is yes. “Everyone interested in anorexia nervosa . . . should skim this book or study it. It will make you realize how dependent upon culture the definition of disease is. I will never look at an anorexic patient in the same way again.” —Howard Spiro, M.D., Gastroenterology “[This] book is a first-class social history and is well-documented both in its historical and scientific portions.” —Vern L. Bullough, American Historical Review “A significant contribution to revisionist history, which re-examines events in light of feminist thought . . . Bell is particularly skillful in describing behavior within its time and culture, which would be bizarre by today’s norms, without reducing it to the pathological.” —Mary Lassance Parthun, Toronto Globe and Mail “Bell is both enlightened and convincing. His book is impressively researched, easy to read, and utterly fascinating.” —Sheila MacLeod, New Statesman

Book excerpt: Continuously popular since it first appeared in 1977, The Incorruptibles remains the acknowledged classic on the bodies of Saints that did not undergo decomposition after death, many remaining fresh and flexible for years, or even centuries. After explaining both natural and artificial mummification, the author shows that the incorruption of the Saints bodies fits into neither category but constitutes a much greater phenomenon which is unexplained by modern science even to this day. The author presents 102 canonized Saints, Beati and Venerables, summarizing their lives, the discovery of their incorruption and investigations by Church and medical authorities. The incorruptible bodies of saints are a consoling sign of Christ's victory over death, a confirmation of the dogma of the Resurrection of the Body, a sign that the Saints are still with us in the Mystical Body of Christ, as well as a proof of the truth of the Catholic Faith for only in the Catholic Church do we find this phenomenon.

Book Rainbow Body and Resurrection

Download or read book Rainbow Body and Resurrection written by Francis V. Tiso and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading authority on the rainbow body traces its history in the encounter of religions in medieval Central Asia, exploring a previously unimagined connection between early Dzogchen and the resurrection of Jesus Francis V. Tiso, a noted authority on the rainbow body, explores this manifestation of spiritual realization in a wide-ranging and deeply informed study of the transformation of the material body into a body of light. Seeking evidence on the boundary between physical science and deep spirituality that might elucidate the resurrection of Jesus, he investigates the case of Khenpo A Chö, a Buddhist monk who died in eastern Tibet in 1999. Rainbow Body and Resurrection chronicles the dissolution of Khenpo's material body within a week of his death, including eye-witness interviews. Tiso describes the spiritual practices that give rise to the rainbow body and traces their history deep into the encounter of religions in medieval Central Asia. His erudite exploration of the Tibetan phenomenon raises the fascinating question of whether there is a connection between the rainbow body and the dying and rising of Jesus. Drawing on a wealth of recent research, Tiso expands his discussion to include the contemplative geography out of which Dzogchen arose some time in the eighth century along the great Silk Road across Central Asia. The result is an illuminating consideration of previously unimagined relationships between spiritual practices and beliefs in Central Asia.

In them are hints of heaven, and they offer profound spiritual advice meant to guide us on the road to eternal glory. In our age, Christ's Parables are often reduced to exercises in moralism. In these pages, Fr. George Rutler - acclaimed author and EWTN television host - unveils these deceptively simple stories, showing you their hidden meanings and how they apply to our own age and way of life. Let Fr. Rutler take you on an enriching tour of Scripture's 24 parables as you learn: Tares in the Field of the Lord: Why it's necessary that scandals beset the Church - and how it brings about a stronger harvest. The Mustard Seed: Why it gave hope to the early Church and prefigures her glorious future. The Yeast: How God speaks in a gentle and inward voice which melts the soul, and how you could be drowning Him out. The Hidden Treasure: Are you responding properly to the unique gifts Christ has given you? The Net: Many will be sifted out. How to be sure you're among the souls He keeps. The Unmerciful Servant: Not only must you forgive, you must convert the offender. Are you a channel for God's grace? Laborers in the Vineyard: Are you letting selfishness and pride get in the way of the salvation of your neighbor's soul? The Two Sons: The dangers of agnosticism. Are you guilty? You may be astonished at the answer. The Marriage of the King's Son: Why frequent reception of the sacraments is necessary for dwelling at the wedding feast. The Ten Virgins: There's a difference between watching and being prepared for Christ's return. Are you ready? The Ten Talents: God has given you a special gift. Do you know what it is, and how you should use it? The Two Debtors: How to know if you are going "through the motions" without Christ's love. The Good Samaritan: Do you know the most overlooked element of this parable? It may surprise you. The Rich Fool: Our capacity for self-deception is limitless. Learn the only way to be truly know yourself. The Barren Fig Tree: Time is running out, and we have one last chance to cultivate virtue. Will you bear fruit in time? The Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin: Do you judge others, or do you receive them as Christ did? Why your approach to lost sheep could cost you your soul. The Prodigal Son: Learn how this famous parable explains why God created mankind and chose to give Himself to us. The Unjust Steward: The world is filled with evildoers. Are you mirroring the light of Christ? The Rich Man and Lazarus: Learn the evils of self-sufficiency, and the dangers of taking gifts for granted. The Unjust Judge: Why you must persevere in prayer despite your continued sins. The Pharisee and the Publican: Why even though you may not commit great sins, your failure to put faith into action could ruin your soul.

Book excerpt: St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617), Patroness of the Americas, is the first canonized saint of the New World. She was the tenth of thirteen children, and her mother experienced no pain at her birth. Though exquisitely beautiful (hence her nickname, Rose), she refused to marry, and while helping support her family by needlework and growing flowers, she practiced heroic charity and lived as a Dominican Tertiary in her parents’ home. Rose tenderly cared for the sick, even those with repulsive wounds, and she often obtained miraculous cures for people from the Child Jesus. On other occasions, she worked miracles in order to feed the members of her family, and became known as “Mother of the Poor.” Rose continually prayed and offered her sufferings for the conversion of the idolatrous Incas. In the year 1615, through her prayers, the Blessed Sacrament and the people of Lima were spared attack by savage pirates. St. Rose was a friend and confidant of St. Martin de Porres, who lived in the same city. Her mystical experiences caused an ecclesiastical inquiry. Though dead at only 31, St. Rose’s love of God was so intense that she was recognized as a saint in her own time and was canonized by the Church just 54 years later, in 1671. St. Rose of Lima has captured the imagination of the world and stands as one of the most popular saints in the history of the Church.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the nineteenth century a new type of mystic emerged in Catholic Europe. While cases of stigmatisation had been reported since the thirteenth century, this era witnessed the development of the 'stigmatic': young women who attracted widespread interest thanks to the appearance of physical stigmata. To understand the popularity of these stigmatics we need to regard them as the 'saints' and religious 'celebrities' of their time. With their 'miraculous' bodies, they fit contemporary popular ideas (if not necessarily those of the Church) of what sanctity was. As knowledge about them spread via modern media and their fame became marketable, they developed into religious 'celebrities'"--
