This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Thomas Political Doctrine and Democracy Though the political panacea of the day, democracy is still insufficiently understood by the many whom it affects _most. The qualities Of it are better known than are the qualifications for it; the ends than the means. It is airily esteemed the great emancipation, the crown Of the glorified people, the tomb of autocracy, the gate-way to the millenium, etc. But its demands are proportionate to its favors; and there can be no true concept of democracy which ignores the preliminaries which induce it and its success. Download or read book The Political Ideas of St Thomas Aquinas written by Thomas Aquinas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in The Hafner Library of Classics in 1953, The Political Ideas of St. Thomas Aquinas provides important insights into the human side of one of the most influential medieval philosophers. St. Thomas Aquinas (c. 1226–1274) is recognized for having synthesized Christian theology with Aristotelian metaphysics, and for his spirited philosophical defense of Christianity that was addressed to the non-Christian reader. In this collection, editor Dino Bigongiari has selected Aquinas’s key writings on politics, justice, social problems, and forms of government, including the philosopher’s main works: Regimine Principus (On Kinship) and The Summa Theologica. In an authoritative discussion of the historical background and evolution of St. Thomas Aquinas’s political ideas, Dr. Bigongiari’s commentary explains this philosopher’s enduring influence and legacy. Accompanying explanatory notes and a helpful glossary of unusual terms and familiar words help to make this practical volume an ideal text for students and general readers alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Ideas of St. Thomas Aquinas Beasts, without instruction, devoid of experience, deprived of mod els, know immediately what to do and how to act: the newly born lamb at the mere sight of a wolf runs for safety; birds hatched from eggs that have been removed from the nest, when the time comes, build a nest identical to the one from which they came and which they never saw; ailing animals instinctively pick out the herbs that will cure their illnesses. Man, however, is born with a common vague notion in place of this precise and particularized instinct. To that general notion he applies reason and thus is able to take care of himself. He, too, discovers the herbs that cure his diseases, but as the result of a process of reasoning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Christian Structure of Politics

Download or read book The Christian Structure of Politics written by William McCormick and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Structure of Politics, the first full-length monograph on Thomas Aquinas's De Regno in decades, offers an authoritative interpretation of De Regno as a contribution to our understanding of Aquinas's politics, particularly on the relationship between Church and State. William McCormick argues that Aquinas takes up a via media between Augustine and Aristotle in De Regno, invoking human nature to ground politics as rational, but also Christian principles to limit politics because of both sin and the supernatural end of man beyond politics. Where others have seen disjoined sections on the best regime, tyranny, and the reward of the king, McCormick identifies a dialogical structure to the text - one not unlike the disputed question format - whereby Aquinas both tempers expectations for the best government and offers a spiritual diagnosis of tyranny, culminating in a sharp critique of civil religion and political theology. McCormick draws upon historical research on Aquinas' context, especially that of Anthony Black, Cary Nederman and Francis Oakley, from which he develops three themes: the medieval preponderance of kingship and royal ideology; the relationship between Church and State; and the intersection of Latin Christianity and Greco-Roman antiquity. While age-old concerns, recent research in these areas has allowed us to move beyond simplistic platitudes. For scholars of political theory and the history of political thought, De Regno will prove fascinating for the interplay of Aristotelian and Augustinian elements, undercutting the conventional wisdom that Aquinas was simply an Aristotelian. De Regno also includes an extended treatment of civil religion, one of Aquinas’ most historically-oriented discussions of politics.
