Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of St. Paul The special aim of this volume consequently is not only to present in a systematic whole the various virtues and duties which the apostle inculcates, but also to show (and this is indeed the central thought of the book) that morality is absolutely vital to St. Paul's religion, and that he ever seeks to bring the dynamic of the Gospel to bear upon practical life. N 0 man is independent of his environment, and with all his originality Paul was affected by the conditions of life and thought amid which he was reared. The writer has therefore endeavoured to indicate the apostle's rela tions to the ethical conceptions of his day, contrasting and comparing at various points his teaching with the philo sophical systems of the ancient world. The particular topics dealt with fall into three main divisions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Ethical Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ethical Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Charles Augustus Briggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Teaching of Jesus This book originated from a course of lectures, which were prepared for the students of the Union Theological Seminary, in the fulfilment of my duty as Professor of Biblical Theology. The field of Bib lical Theology may be divided into three divisions. Biblical Religion, Biblical Faith, and Biblical Ethics (see General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture pp. 604 sq). After the completion of the courses on Biblical Religion and Biblical Faith I undertook an inductive study of Biblical Ethics. This I found to be a comparatively unexplored field; for most scholars have devoted their attention to the central theme, the Biblical Faith: many to the Re ligion of the Old Testament; but few to the Ethics, either of the Old Testament, or the New Testament; and these few have for the most part considered the subject on the basis of selected passages for homi letical or practical purposes from the point of view of the ethical Philosophy, which they held. My atten tion was first given to the ethics of the Old Testa ment, after which I made a complete inductive study of the Ethics of Jesus. This study was revised sev eral times as the lectures were repeated to different classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of St. Paul Divine Nature, we need not hesitate to allow that there is some truth in it - some truth, at least, as far as it concerns a great many disciples even of the purest creed. Christians, no doubt, there have been and are, whose conceptions of God are inadequate even to the verge of triviality and ehildishness - involving, when analysed, all sorts of moral impossi bilities and contradictions. When we think or speak of God as a Being whose govern ment and actions are easily comprehended and explained, or as a Man, infinitely greater, it may be, and wiser than ourselves, yet, like ourselves, full of partialities and petty schemes and unjust thoughts: when we so speak or think, we are fairly open to such a charge as this.
