Book St Cyprian the wonder working magician

Download or read book St Cyprian the wonder working magician written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second drama in this volume, "The Wonderful Magician", is perhaps better known to poetical students in England than even the first, from the spirited fragment Shelley has left us in his "Scenes from Calderon." The preoccupation of a subject by a great master throws immense difficulties in the way of any one who ventures to follow in the same path: but as Shelley allowed himself great licence in his versification, and either from carelessness or an imperfect knowledge of Spanish is occasionally unfaithful to the meaning of his author, it may be hoped in my own version that strict fidelity both as to the form as well as substance of the original may be some compensation for the absence of those higher poetical harmonies to which many of my readers will have been accustomed.

Book excerpt: 'The Wonder-Working Magician', also known as 'The Mighty Magician', is a three-act play written by the celebrated Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca. In the first scene of the first act, Cyprian, dressed as a student, is in a wood near Antioch with his companions, Clarin and Moscon, who carry books. Cyprian sends them to enjoy the festivities in Antioch while he stays behind to study. Moscon questions why Cyprian would choose to study on a day of such unrestricted revelry, but Clarin supports Cyprian's decision. Cyprian asks them to stop bickering and leave, and eventually they do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of St Cyprian is a massive occult work complete with images from original texts, copious amounts of notes and reference citations and, best of all, information that has only been available in the original Portuguese texts. The author was granted unprecedented access to private collections and studied the original texts in great detail He has taken everything he could from them and compiled what we believe to be the single greatest reference on the subject of the magick of ST. Cyprian. In the author's own words: "This edition brings together the three texts from the fourth century that gave rise to the magical tradition associated with the name of St. Cyprian (Conversion, Confession and Martyrdom), the four most important Iberian grimoires of the nineteenth century (the Portuguese that gave birth to the Brazilian versions and the Spaniards containing the instructions of ceremonial magic) and several other magical texts associated with the Holy Sorcerer. The material was organized in sections that allow a comprehensive analysis of the contents (The Origin of the Book, Vita Cypriani, Magical Art, Talismans and Amulets, The Book of the Spirits, Cyprian Prayers, Exorcisms, Magical Treasures, Magical Secrets). The historical introduction has a broad and detailed description of the origins and development of the tradition from the fourth to the nineteenth century. The edition is enriched with a Preface by Nicholaj De Mattos Frisvold and the Presentation by Felix Castro Vicente."

Book Three Philosophical Poets Lucretius Dante and Goethe critical edition Volume 8

Download or read book Three Philosophical Poets Lucretius Dante and Goethe critical edition Volume 8 written by George Santayana and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Santayana's argument for the unity of philosophy and poetry. This concise and compelling volume—described by Santayana as a “piece of literary criticism, together with a first broad lesson in the history of philosophy”—introduces Santayana's thought in the rich context of a European poetic tradition that demonstrates his broad conception of philosophy. Rejecting both the Platonic opposition of philosophy and poetry and more recent attempts to reduce philosophy to science, Santayana argues that philosophy and poetry at their best are united in articulating a comprehensive vision of the world that permits honest contemplation of the universe. He considers the ideal visions of three artists: Lucretius's naturalism provides a total perspective on the physical world but renders experience monotonous; Dante's supernaturalism provides a total perspective on experience but subordinates nature to morality; Goethe's romanticism provides a dramatic perspective on nature and experience but lacks totality. Santayana sees each as the best in his own way, though none is best in all ways; and he speculates that the ideal poet would integrate the gifts and insights of all three, resulting in “rational art,” of which philosophical poetry is a prime example. This critical edition, volume VIII of The Works of George Santayana, includes notes, textual commentary, lists of variants and emendations, an index, and other tools useful to Santayana scholars.
