Book The Question of John the Baptist and Jesus Indictment of the Religious Leaders

Download or read book The Question of John the Baptist and Jesus Indictment of the Religious Leaders written by Roberto Martinez and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study argues that the tradition in Matthew 11:2-19 and Luke 7:18-35 deserves to be interpreted differently in the Gospel of Luke and explains how Luke integrates John's apparent ignorance of Jesus as well as Jesus' indictment of the religious leaders into his literary scheme. Finally, Martinez shows how Luke puts this tradition about John and Jesus at the service of his theocentric and christological perspectives and offers an alternative explanation to the prevailing interpretation of John's question.

Book The Nature Miracles of Jesus

Download or read book The Nature Miracles of Jesus written by Graham H. Twelftree and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature miracle stories of Jesus—walking on the water or feeding thousands with a small amount of food, for example—are so spectacular that many find them a problem, whether historical, philosophical, or even theological. This is the first book to tackle this problem head on. Do the stories reflect events in the life of the historical Jesus, or are they myths or legends? Or, perhaps they grew out of parables or from more ordinary events into the incredible stories we now have. Or, again, perhaps this the wrong approach! A group of high-ranking biblical historians, philosophers, and theologians with very diverse views set out to provide possible answers. Contributors include: • James Crossley • Eric Eve • Craig S. Keener • Michael Levine • Timothy J. McGrew • Scot McKnight • Graham H. Twelftree • Ruben Zimmermann

Book Acts An Earth Bible Commentary

Download or read book Acts An Earth Bible Commentary written by Michael Trainor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gospel of Luke presents an ecological symphony that reveals a Jesus connected to Earth. His ministry touches all aspects of creation, human and non-human, and invites disciples into an ecological asceticism. This same spirit continues in the Acts of the Apostles. In this Earth Bible Commentary on Acts, Michael Trainor allows our environmental concerns to shape his interpretative approach, and thus ecological nuances emerge. Luke's household of disciples, imbued with the spirit of the risen Jesus, to embrace the world and bring to it a word of reconciliation, embark on this mission. This formally begins at Pentecost with their reception of God's creative and renewing Spirit that empowers them as Earth's children. From this moment an explosion of activity moves them over Earth's lands, beginning in Jerusalem, Earth's navel (Acts 1.1-8.1), into Samaria, the space in-between that navel and Galilee, the garden of God's earthly delights (Acts 8.2-11.17), to the ends of Earth, Rome (Acts 11.18-28.33). As we trace Luke's vast geographical journey around the Mediterranean, key moments highlight fresh environmental insights that offer new hope for contemporary disciples seeking ecological affirmation at this particular time in world history.

Book The Devil Demons Judas and the Jews

Download or read book The Devil Demons Judas and the Jews written by Torsten Lofstedt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What place do the four Gospels give Satan, demons, and Jesus’ human opponents (including Jewish leaders but also Jesus’ disciples) in their accounts of Jesus’ life? This study takes a literary-historical approach to the Gospels, examining them as narratives. It shows how the authors were in the process of developing the devil as a character and determining which roles he filled. New interpretations of individual passages in the Gospels are given as well as new understandings of the theological emphases of each author. This study is also a contribution to redaction criticism and the relative chronology of the Gospels. It employs the theory of Matthean posteriority which revolutionizes our understanding of the literary relations between the Gospels and allows for a new understanding of theological development in early Christianity.

Book Cardinal Hugh of St Cher s Commentary on Jesus Parable of Dives and Lazarus Luke 16 19 31

Download or read book Cardinal Hugh of St Cher s Commentary on Jesus Parable of Dives and Lazarus Luke 16 19 31 written by Robert J. Karris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardinal Hugh of St. Cher was a water walker. He was learned in both law and theology. His leadership skills were so outstanding that he quickly became a major superior in his Dominican Order. Having gotten word of Hugh’s talents, the pope made him a cardinal. The famed artist Fra Angelico placed Hugh in a crucifixion scene with the words “biblical interpreter” above his head. These words beautifully sum up what he was to generation after generation of biblical scholars and preachers till the sixteenth century. The Franciscan Cardinal St. Bonaventure (d. 1274) generously copied from Hugh’s Commentary on Luke without attribution. So did the Dominican Bishop St. Albert the Great (d. 1280). Producers of homily aids in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries filled their pages with nuggets from Hugh. What will you like about Hugh? First, he’s not in an ivory tower. He calls out his fellow prelates for being more interested in gold than in sharing God’s mercy with sinners and the poor. Second, he knows how to preach the text, breaking it down into memorable soundbites. Third, he knows and creatively adapts the Scriptures and tradition. Reading his commentary on Dives and Lazarus will not only activate your mind and warm your heart. Would you be surprised if it also were to trouble your conscience?

Book Significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Essays

Download or read book Significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Essays written by S. Nkhoma and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Nkhoma, in this scholarly collection of essays, enriches the reader with different interesting windows on how one can unearth the riches contained in some of the New Testament writings. The first two essays underscore the importance of placing the New Testament in a proper context and attempt to construct this context by discussing the historical background and the theological understanding of the Qumran Covenanters as derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Jonathan Nkhoma treats many aspects touching the proper interpretation of the New Testament writings. For example, he shows how the sacramental rituals of washing and eating together in the Qumran Community add meaning to the same rituals carried over to the New Testament. The significance of table fellowship is treated in greater depth in a subsequent essay. Throughout the various essays the question of the historicity of the various texts is treated in a succinct way and the author is able to come to some helpful conclusions drawing on the previous work of many well know scholars. The later essays tackle the very difficult question of martyrdom and Jonathan Nkhoma delves into the history of two particular cases in order to shed light on this difficult subject. All essays are written in impeccable English which flows in an easy style. This collection of essays would be invaluable to anyone who would wish to make a serious study of the New Testament writings.

Download or read book Truth and Reality written by Douglas Dales and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thorough study and exposition of the last work for which St Bonaventure was responsible before his death in 1274. The Collations on the Hexaemeron, also called The Illuminations of the Church comprises lectures that he gave in Paris in 1273 to Franciscan and other students and masters in the university there. They were recorded by two independent witnesses and one version, the definitive one, was prepared for publication and approved by Bonaventure. This is one of the most interesting, original and important texts of medieval theology and it has been well translated and edited in a new edition. The purpose of this study is to examine the precise context for the approach that Bonaventure took, to place this work as the culmination of his spiritual theology, and to provide the reader with a lucid epitome of the contents of the text, drawing out their significance for theology and prayer in the life of the Church today.
