Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday life in the Crown colony of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was characterized by a direct encounter of people with modernity through the consumption and use of foreign machines – in particular, the Singer sewing machine, but also the gramophone, tramway, bicycle and varieties of industrial equipment. The ‘metallic modern’ of the 19th and early 20th century Ceylon encompassed multiple worlds of belonging and imagination; and enabled diverse conceptions of time to coexist through encounters with Siam, the United States and Japan as well as a new conception of urban space in Colombo. Metallic Modern describes the modern as it was lived and experienced by non-elite groups – tailors, seamstresses, shopkeepers, workers – and suggests that their idea of the modern was nurtured by a changing material world.

Book Opinion and Evidence in Sri Lanka s Newspapers and Magazines

Download or read book Opinion and Evidence in Sri Lanka s Newspapers and Magazines written by Rohan Samarajiva and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to the survival of newspapers and magazines in the new environment will be adherence to the tenets of good journalistic practice. Crowd sourcing through tweets and blogs will provide serious competition to conventional news gathering, but verification of facts, getting all sides of a story, etc., will remain in the hands of journalists. They should, in fact, not fight crowd sourced media, but leverage it, putting more of their effort into enhancing the quality of news and analysis rather than being first or generating the most volume. In terms of value addition, there will always be a premium on high-quality opinion. When the New York Times experimented with selling online access, they found that the highest demand was for the opinion pieces, not news per se. Routinely, the most read, blogged, emailed sections online are the opinion columns. But these are high-quality, high-cost columns, written by experienced journalists and experts, including a Nobel Laureate economist in the case of the New York Times. They are opinion true, but opinion based on heavy reliance on evidence.

Book excerpt: Peter Lorre described himself as merely a ‘face maker’. His own negative attitude also characterizes traditional perspectives which position Lorre as a tragic figure within film history: the promising European artist reduced to a Hollywood gimmick, unable to escape the murderous image of his role in Fritz Lang’sM.This book shows that the life of Peter Lorre cannot be reduced to a series of simplistic oppositions. It reveals that, despite the limitations of his macabre star image, Lorre’s screen performances were highly ambitious, and the terms of his employment were rarely restrictive. Lorre’s career was a complex negotiation between transnational identity, Hollywood filmmaking practices, the ownership of star images and the mechanics of screen performance.

Book Women the Nation s Narrative

Download or read book Women the Nation s Narrative written by Neloufer De Mel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the development of nationalism in Sri Lanka during the past century, particularly within the dominant Sinhala Buddhist and militant Tamil movements. Tracing the ways women from diverse backgrounds have engaged with nationalism, Neloufer de Mel argues that gender is crucial to an understanding of nationalism and vice versa. Traversing both the colonial and postcolonial periods in Sri Lanka's history, the author assesses a range of writers, activists, political figures, and movements almost completely unknown in the West. With her rigorous, historically located analyses, de Mel makes a persuasive case for the connections between figures like actress Annie Boteju and art historian and journalist Anil de Silva; poetry whether written by Jean Arasanayagam or Tamil revolutionary women; and political movements like the LTTE, the JVP, the Mother's Front, and contemporary feminist organizations. Evaluating the colonial period in light of the violence that animates Sri Lanka today, de Mel proposes what Bruce Robbins has termed a 'lateral cosmopolitanism' that will allow coalitions to form and to practice an oppositional politics of peace. In the process, she examines the gendered forms through which the nation and the state both come together and pull apart. The breadth of topics examined here will make this work a valuable resource for South Asianists as well as for scholars in a wide range of fields who choose to consider the ways in which gender inflects their areas of research and teaching.

Book The Domain of Constant Excess

Download or read book The Domain of Constant Excess written by Rohan Bastin and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sri Lankan ethnic conflict that has occurred largely between Sinhala Buddhists and Tamil Hindus is marked by a degree of religious tolerance that sees both communities worshiping together. This study describes one important site of such worship, the ancient Hindu temple complex of Munnesvaram. Standing adjacent to one of Sri Lanka's historical western ports, the fortunes of the Munnesvaram temples have waxed and waned through the years of turbulence, violence and social change that have been the country's lot since the advent of European colonialism in the Indian Ocean. Bastin recounts the story of these temples and analyses how the Hindu temple is reproduced as a center of worship amidst conflict and competition.

Book Tea Time with Terrorists

Download or read book Tea Time with Terrorists written by Mark Stephen Meadows and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist’s travelogue of war-torn Sri Lanka “brings refreshing clarity and enlightenment” to our understanding of terrorism (Robert Young Pelton). Armed with a map and a motorcycle, Mark Stephen Meadows ventures to Sri Lanka’s war zone to interview terrorists, generals, and heroin dealers on their own terms. He seeks only to understand the conflict and witness the civil war’s effects on the country. As he travels north through Colombo, Kandy, and the damaged city of Jaffna, Meadows discovers an island of beauty and abundance ground down by three decades of war. He is invited into an ancient culture where he learns to trap an elephant, weave rope from coconut husks, cast out devils, and even have afternoon tea with terrorists. Meadow’s story and take on the war focuses on the interconnectedness of globalization, the media, and modern terrorism in what Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea, calls “an excellent undertaking.”
