Book Telling Stories

Download or read book Telling Stories written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a highly comprehensive assessment of the postcolonial short story since the thirty-six contributions cover most geographical areas concerned. Another important feature is that it deals not only with exclusive practitioners of the genre (Mansfield, Munro), but also with well-known novelists (Achebe, Armah, Atwood, Carey, Rushdie), so that stimulating comparisons are suggested between shorter and longer works by the same authors. In addition, the volume is of interest for the study of aspects of orality (dialect, dance rhythms, circularity and trickster figure for instance) and of the more or less conflictual relationships between the individual (character or implied author) and the community. Furthermore, the marginalized status of women emerges as another major theme, both as regards the past for white women settlers, or the present for urbanized characters, primarily in Africa and India. The reader will also have the rare pleasure of discovering Janice Kulik Keefer's “Fox,” her version of what she calls in her commentary “displaced autobiography’” or “creative non-fiction.” Lastly, an extensive bibliography on the postcolonial short story opens up further possibilities for research.

Book Nectar 20

    Book Details:
  • Author : Babaji Bob Kindler
  • Publisher : Sarada Ramakrishna Vivekananda Associations
  • Release : 2006-03-12
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 36 pages

Download or read book Nectar 20 written by Babaji Bob Kindler and published by Sarada Ramakrishna Vivekananda Associations. This book was released on 2006-03-12 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we take stock of all that this Winter issue of Nectar contains, it is the theme of suffering which stands out the most and begs for attention and inspection. Whether this suffering is of an emotional nature, a matter of physical ill-health, a case of mental unrest or of intellectual unsurety, it is a constant and nagging consideration on the minds of all beings in relativity. And it is just for this type of reason that teachings of the kind that appear in Nectar are so important and so necessary, for they are brought to bear upon the presence of suffering in healing fashion by the words of illumined souls such as Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Sri Sarada Devi, and others. It was this latter, the Holy Mother, who stated, “Misery, suffering, and pain — where will they go, my child? They are our companions in life.” Such admittances on the part of holy beings bring both relief and clarity to the situation, acting as a soothing lenitive to both body and mind. Moreover, the soul may also need amelioration at times, and teachings of a higher order are in store for that end. As one Christian mystic was reported to have said, “If you knew the purpose and benefit of your suffering, you would not ask that it be taken away,” leading us to conclude that suffering plays a role in both neutralizing the effects created by us on the field of action, and weaning us off of all of its causes so that we strive for higher existence.

Book The Politics of English

Download or read book The Politics of English written by Lionel Wee and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions that explore the increasingly important roles that English plays in Asia, including its contribution to economic growth, national imaginaries and creative writing. These are issues that are political in a broad sense, but the diversity of Asian contexts also means that the social, political and cultural ramifications of the spread of English into Asia will have to be understood in relation to the challenges facing specific societies. The chapters in the book collectively illustrate this diversity by focusing on countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. Each country has two contributions devoted to it: one paper provides an overview of the country’s language policy and its positioning of English, and another provides a critical discussion of creative expressions involving the use of English. Taken together, the papers in the volume detail the most recent developments concerning the politics of English in Asia.

Book The Lovelorn Ghost and the Magical Monk

Download or read book The Lovelorn Ghost and the Magical Monk written by Justin Thomas McDaniel and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on representations of a famous ghost and monk from the late eighteenth century to today, Justin Thomas McDaniel builds a case for interpreting modern Thai Buddhist practice through the movements of these transformative figures. He follows embodiments of the ghost and monk in a variety of genres and media, including biography, drama, ritual, art, liturgy, film, television, and the Internet. Sourcing nuns, monks, laypeople, and royalty, McDaniel shows how relations with these figures have been instrumental in crafting histories and modernities, particularly local conceptions of being "Buddhist," and the formation and transmission of such identities across different venues and technologies.
