For people stationed in Europe before the internet enlightenment, connections to family and friends in the USA were complicated, expensive and cumbersome. Our lives centered around the squadron, the flying schedule, deployments away from home base, and the weather, bonding our wives and children as much as it did us, the aircrews--pilots and electronic warfare officers assigned to the 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron. But all else was secondary to Victor Alert. Every detail was specified in war plans, concepts of operation, procedures, training manuals, checklists and rules of engagement. To insure we were prepared, frequent war games and exercises gave us practice and confidence. While we all felt absolutely ready to do our jobs if ordered, most of us wondered if anyone high up in our chain of command would be brave, or foolhardy enough to ever push the red button.

Book excerpt: During a portion of the 20th century known as the Cold War Era, when the United States feared an attack on its land, our armed forces kept a 24-hour vigil to meet any armed aggression against us. A part of this vigil involved the United States Air Force keeping fighter interceptor squadrons on alert at all times, with a certain amount of aircraft poised in alert hangars, fully armed and ready to launch within five-minutes from the sound of the alarm. This history is about one such squadron, the 60th/337th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron assigned to Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Its task was to guard a specific area of airspace in the northeast from an airborne attack. Their object was to destroy any enemy bombers penetrating U.S. airspace that was assigned to the squadron. The Air Force assigned the newest ‘all-weather’ interceptor, the F-86D Sabrejet, to the 60th in May 1953. Sometime in mid-1956 the squadron began receiving a more advanced version of the Sabrejet known as the F-86L. In 1958, the squadron converted to the fastest interceptor in the U.S. arsenal, the F-104 Starfighter, which they flew until the unit was deactivated in July 1960. You will follow the events of this fighter squadron from May 1953 until its last F-104 departed in June 1960. It tells the stories of the unit’s accomplishments, tragedies that befell the squadron, the personal reflections and feelings of some of the members, some eventful sporting news, a few social events that occurred, and the public relations work involved in helping the civilian population in the surrounding communities to better understand the importance of the mission of the fighter squadron, and the significance it had on the civilian population.

But people are important. After all, pilots fly the machines. There are a lot of characters here that aviation buffs will immediately recognize: Lots of record-setting test pilots, and even some astronauts. Older non-buffs will also see familiar names: an aviation legend, first-ever moon walkers, a couple of popular entertainers, a famous TV-news anchor and even two former presidential candidates. Watch closely, some of them just flash past. Airplanes star in this tale. None of them were perfect, but many of them excelled performing their assigned tasks. North American Aircraft's F-86F was a beautiful machine. But it was also a breathtakingly-good MiG killer. Because of its fine flying qualities, it was fun to fly--a sports car among sedans. Fairchild/Chase Aircraft's C-123B was an outstanding assault transport. It was almost perfect for its mission in Vietnam, but it could be a real handful for any pilot to fly. I have lots of "favorite" airplanes, but Douglas' A-1H Skyraider stands out. There has never been a better attack fighter in terms of accuracy in iron-bomb delivery, weapons load-carrying ability or endurance. Lockheed's F-104A or C models were many pilot's dream machines. Their luster dimmed somewhat for me after I flew them. But they were certainly suitable for training Test Pilot School students to perform zooms and shuttle-aircraft type approaches and landings. I'll stop with these four. There's much more on airplanes inside--about 192,000 words worth. That's a lot to slog through and you may find some parts too technical or too detailed. Ignore them. There are also many numbers, but most aren't important. Browse for good stuff. If you want more info on some airplane, Google her up.
