Download or read book In Quest of the Ashes written by Douglas Jardine and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A balanced account of the England cricket team's tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1932/33 when the Ashes were regained in the most controversial circumstances. England's captain for the tour Douglas Jardine, first developed and then executed a plan to reduce the threat from Australia's most prolific batsman Don Bradman who, on his first tour of England in 1930, had scored an aggregate of 973 runs in five Tests. Employing his quickest bowlers to bowl what Jardine had termed 'leg theory' but what the media dubbed 'bodyline' he succeeded in his quest and returned to England triumphant. Jardine's strategy attracted severe criticism as the tour was played out and that criticism continued both in England and Australia long after the Tourists had returned. Jardine's account of his and the team's achievements is replete with an understatement that reflects the man.

Download or read book From Verse to Worse written by Lionel Hallam Tennyson Baron Tennyson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1933-01-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Verse to Worse is Lionel Hallam Tennyson's 1933 autobiography. The poet's grandson was a fine writer in his own right, and his colorful life provided him with good source material. As one would expect, there is much for cricket fans here. Perhaps less expected is how much more there is. Fans of Downton Abbey will find that Tennyson lived the life depicted in that show. The lifestyle of house parties and hunting is there, as well as the horrors of World War I, from which the author returned alive though his two brothers did not.So this autobiography is entertaining but also has a serious side. In addition to the public horrors of The Great War, Tennyson owns up to more private difficulties, notably, what we would call today his gambling addiction.Throughout, Tennyson's, wit, humility, and humanity are apparent. This edition has an afterword covering many technicalities of the book's republication.
