Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The picture on the front cover of this book depicts a young man pulling a fishnet, a task of practical relevance for many centuries. It is a complex task, involving load transmission throughout the body, intricate balance, and eye head-hand coordination. The quest toward understanding how we perform such tasks with skill and grace, often in the presence of unpredictable pertur bations, has a long history. However, despite a history of magnificent sculptures and drawings of the human body which vividly depict muscle ac tivity and interaction, until more recent times our state of knowledge of human movement was rather primitive. During the past century this has changed; we now have developed a considerable database regarding the com position and basic properties of muscle and nerve tissue and the basic causal relations between neural function and biomechanical movement. Over the last few decades we have also seen an increased appreciation of the impor tance of musculoskeletal biomechanics: the neuromotor system must control movement within a world governed by mechanical laws. We have now col lected quantitative data for a wealth of human movements. Our capacity to understand the data we collect has been enhanced by our continually evolving modeling capabilities and by the availability of computational power. What have we learned? This book is designed to help synthesize our current knowledge regarding the role of muscles in human movement. The study of human movement is not a mature discipline.

  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book This Land written by Christopher Ketcham and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A big, bold book about public lands . . . The Desert Solitaire of our time.” —Outside A hard-hitting look at the battle now raging over the fate of the public lands in the American West--and a plea for the protection of these last wild places The public lands of the western United States comprise some 450 million acres of grassland, steppe land, canyons, forests, and mountains. It's an American commons, and it is under assault as never before. Journalist Christopher Ketcham has been documenting the confluence of commercial exploitation and governmental misconduct in this region for over a decade. His revelatory book takes the reader on a journey across these last wild places, to see how capitalism is killing our great commons. Ketcham begins in Utah, revealing the environmental destruction caused by unregulated public lands livestock grazing, and exposing rampant malfeasance in the federal land management agencies, who have been compromised by the profit-driven livestock and energy interests they are supposed to regulate. He then turns to the broad effects of those corrupt politics on wildlife. He tracks the Department of Interior's failure to implement and enforce the Endangered Species Act--including its stark betrayal of protections for the grizzly bear and the sage grouse--and investigates the destructive behavior of U.S. Wildlife Services in their shocking mass slaughter of animals that threaten the livestock industry. Along the way, Ketcham talks with ecologists, biologists, botanists, former government employees, whistleblowers, grassroots environmentalists and other citizens who are fighting to protect the public domain for future generations. This Land is a colorful muckraking journey--part Edward Abbey, part Upton Sinclair--exposing the rot in American politics that is rapidly leading to the sell-out of our national heritage. The book ends with Ketcham's vision of ecological restoration for the American West: freeing the trampled, denuded ecosystems from the effects of grazing, enforcing the laws already in place to defend biodiversity, allowing the native species of the West to recover under a fully implemented Endangered Species Act, and establishing vast stretches of public land where there will be no development at all, not even for recreation.

Book Charmed Circle

Download or read book Charmed Circle written by James R. Mellow and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avant-garde Paris comes to life in this "meticulous and loving reconstruction of the period" (The New York Times Book Review) On almost every Saturday of the first half of the twentieth century, Gertrude Stein would open her door to the likes of Picasso and Matisse, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, Cocteau and Apollinaire, welcoming them into a salon alive with vivid avant-garde paintings and sparkling intellectual conversation. In Charmed Circle, James R. Mellow has re-created this fascinating world and the complex woman who dominated it. His engaging narrative illuminates Stein's writing—now celebrated along with the work of such literary giants as Joyce and Woolf—including her difficult early periods, which adapted cubism and abstraction to the written word. Rich with detail and insight, it conveys both the serene rhythms of daily life with her devoted partner, Alice B. Toklas, and the radical pulse and dramatic upheavals of her exciting era. Spanning the years from 1903, when Stein first arrived in Paris, to her final days at the end of the Second World War, Charmed Circle is a penetrating and lively account of a writer at the heart of modernity.

Book excerpt: Recoded City examines alternative urban design, planning and architecture for the other 90%: namely the practice of participatory placemaking, a burgeoning practice that co-author Thomas Ermacora terms ‘recoding’. In combining bottom-up and top-down means of regenerating and rebalancing neighbourhoods affected by declining welfare or struck by disaster, this growing movement brings greater resilience. Recoded City sheds light on a new epoch in the relationship between cities and civil society by presenting an emerging range of collaborative solutions and distributed governance models. The authors draw on their own fresh research of global pioneers forging localist design strategies, public-realm interventions and new stakeholder dynamics. As the world becomes increasingly digital and virtual, a myriad of online tools and technological options is becoming available. These give unprecedented co-creation opportunities to communities and professionals alike, yielding the benefits of a more open – DIY – society. Because of its close engagement with people, place and local identity, the field of participatory placemaking has huge untapped potential. Responding to the challenges of the Anthropocene era, Recoded City is for decision-makers, developers and practitioners working globally to make better and more liveable cities.

Book The Tormentor

Download or read book The Tormentor written by Jacques Meyer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsieur Arthur Valois Dourville de Montrissart was a short cynical man who distrusted everything and demeaned almost everybody. The lack of refinement in his personality, his devious attitude betrayed his self proclaimed aristocratic name of Valois Dourville de Montrissart. Arthur was far to be a chivalrous knight. As the owner of a classy French restaurant Le Cerisier, he displayed these characteristics to the disgust of his dedicated employees. For many ordinary working men, Arthurs hostile management was enough reason to quit, just as Leansing, Camille and chef Picharon did. But not Pierre Choucart, for he was no ordinary man. His inspiration was drawn from Mahatma Gandhi who preached peaceful means to British rule. Pierre was ready to accept the beatings. Moreover, Choucarts great sense of humor was the very quality that kept him working in such an offensive environment. What mattered to him most was that he earned the respect, the friendship of his customers with his good nature and honesty. This very trait infuriated Arthur, thus Pierre became his bte noire. Even that a great portion of his life was spent working for a tyrant, no better than le petit Napoleon, Pierre did not have the slightest regret. If this was a fairy tale, the humble Pierre Choucart lived happily ever after with a conscience that has forgiven and a mind that reminisce only the funny, the warm-hearted memories at Le Cerisier.
