Book Sprachliche Zweifelsf lle

Download or read book Sprachliche Zweifelsf lle written by Eleonore Schmitt and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Prescription and Tradition in Language

Download or read book Prescription and Tradition in Language written by Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contextualises case studies across a wide variety of languages and cultures, crystallising key interrelationships between linguistic standardisation and prescriptivism, and between ideas and practices. It focuses on different traditions of standardisation and prescription throughout the world and addresses questions such as how nationalistic idealisations of ‘traditional’ language persist (or shift) amid language change, linguistic variation and multilingualism. The volume explores issues of standardisation and the sociolinguistic phenomenon of prescription as a formative influence on the notional standard language as well as the interconnections between these in a wide range of geographical contexts. It balances the otherwise strong emphasis on English in English language publications on prescriptivism and breaks new ground with its multilingual approach across languages and nations. The book will appeal to scholars working within different linguistic traditions interested in questions relating to all aspects of standardisation and prescriptivism.

Book Diachronic Corpora Genre and Language Change

Download or read book Diachronic Corpora Genre and Language Change written by Richard J. Whitt and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a state-of-the-art overview of the intersecting fields of corpus linguistics, historical linguistics, and genre-based studies of language usage. Papers in this collection are devoted to presenting relevant methods pertinent to corpus-based studies of the connection between genre and language change, linguistic changes that occur in particular genres, and specific diachronic phenomena that are influenced by genre factors to greater and lesser degrees. Data are drawn from a number of languages, and the scope of the studies presented here is both short- and long-term, covering cases of recent change as well as more long-term alterations.

Book Sprachliche Zweifelsf lle im Deutschen

Download or read book Sprachliche Zweifelsf lle im Deutschen written by Wolf Peter Klein and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Was sind sprachliche Zweifelsfälle?

Book Contrastive Studies in Morphology and Syntax

This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using different theoretical approaches and frameworks, this book addresses a broad range of themes in contrastive linguistics, including inflection, derivation and compounding, tense, wh-questions, post-verbal subjects, focus and clitics, among others. Comparing English, German, Greek, Romance, Slavic and South Pacific languages, the book highlights the significance of the contrastive perspective for language-specific description and general interface issues, casting light on contrasts between languages at the levels of morphology and syntax. In this respect, it makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of language typology and language universals.

Book Frequenz Prototyp Schema

Download or read book Frequenz Prototyp Schema written by Eleonore Schmitt and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Zwischen Norm und Zweifel Sprachliche Zweifelsf lle innerhalb der deutschen Gegenwartssprache written by Sebastian Minas and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Intra individual Variation in Language

Download or read book Intra individual Variation in Language written by Alexander Werth and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers several empirical, methodological, and theoretical approaches to the study of observable variation within individuals on various linguistic levels. With a focus on German varieties, the chapters provide answers on the following questions (inter alia): Which linguistic and extra-linguistic factors explain intra-individual variation? Is there observable intra-individual variation that cannot be explained by linguistic and extra-linguistic factors? Can group-level results be generalised to individual language usage and vice versa? Is intra-individual variation indicative of actual patterns of language change? How can intra-individual variation be examined in historical data? Consequently, the various theoretical, methodological and empirical approaches in this volume offer a better understanding of the meaning of intra-individual variation for patterns of language development, language variation and change. The inter- and transdisciplinary nature of the volume is an exciting new frontier, and the results of the studies in this book provide a wealth of new findings as well as challenges to some of the existing findings and assumptions regarding the nature of intra-individual variation.

Book Grammar Between Norm and Variation

Download or read book Grammar Between Norm and Variation written by Alexandra N. Lenz and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume offer the most various access to the discussed questions on norm and variation. In their entirety, they reflect the current discussion of the topic. Focusing on the object languages German and English ensures a high level of topical consistency. On the other hand, the four large topic areas (emergence and change of norms and grammatical constructions; relationship of codes of norms and 'real' language usage; competition of standard and non-standard language norms; and subsistent norms of minority languages and «institutionalised second-language varieties») cover a large range of relevant issues, thereby certainly giving an impetus to new and further investigations.

Book Diglossic Translanguaging

Download or read book Diglossic Translanguaging written by Esther Jahns and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how German-speaking Jews living in Berlin make sense and make use of their multilingual repertoire. With a focus on lexical variation, the book demonstrates how speakers integrate Yiddish and Hebrew elements into German for indexing belonging and for positioning themselves within the Jewish community. Linguistic choices are shaped by language ideologies (e.g., authenticity, prescriptivism, nostalgia). Speakers translanguage when using their multilingual repertoire, but do so in a diglossic way, using elements from different languages for specific domains.

Book Perspektiven linguistischer Sprachkritik

Download or read book Perspektiven linguistischer Sprachkritik written by Jörg Bücker and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a collection of new perspectives on linguistic aspects of language criticism. It aims to offer a systematic account of the linguistic dimensions of all complex actions and discourses that can be the subject of critical language theory, which tries to link language and society. In contrast to conventional language criticism, the linguistic branch builds its conditions on the basis of a systemic analysis of its objects of inquiry. Its main goal is the formation of a linguistic awareness regarding the criterion of appropriateness with view of situational, contextual, and cultural factors. The contributions in this volume reflect the multitude of different factors of and interrelations between linguistic aspects of language criticism. They show the extent to which critical linguistic practices impact societal issues and discourses but also how they function in everyday and institutional contexts such as new media and face-to-face interactions. They also discuss the didactic challenges and opportunities that come with the teaching of language criticism in schools and universities. This book is primarily aimed at linguists as well as lecturers and teachers but also at general readers interested in all aspects of language criticism.

Book English Compounds and their Spelling

Download or read book English Compounds and their Spelling written by Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone writing texts in English is constantly faced with the unavoidable question whether to use open spelling (drinking fountain), hyphenation (far-off) or solid spelling (airport) for individual compounds. While some compounds commonly occur with alternative spellings, others show a very clear bias for one form. This book tests over 60 hypotheses and explores the patterns underlying the spelling of English compounds from a variety of perspectives. Based on a sample of 600 biconstituent compounds with identical spelling in all reference works in which they occur (200 each with open, hyphenated and solid spelling), this empirical study analyses large amounts of data from corpora and dictionaries and concludes that the spelling of English compounds is not chaotic but actually correlates with a large number of statistically significant variables. An easily applicable decision tree is derived from the data and an innovative multi-dimensional prototype model is suggested to account for the results.

Book A Language Management Approach to Language Problems

Download or read book A Language Management Approach to Language Problems written by Goro Christoph Kimura and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been increased interest in examining the treatment of language problems across different levels of society, ranging from individual interactional issues to language policy and planning at the national or supra-national level. Among the various approaches to tackle this issue, Language Management Theory (LMT) provides a framework to address behaviour towards language problems on differet levels explicitly and comprehensively. Using LMT as a unifying theoretical concept, the chapters in this volume examine the links between micro and macro dimensions in their analyses of a variety of language problems in Asian and European contexts. This body of work illustrates that the LMT framework is able to show the characteristics of different dimensions clearly, especially when combined with a conceptualization of the micro and macro as a continuum of intertwining elements. This volume will appeal both to those interested in language policy and planning as well as those interested in interaction between speakers from different language backgrounds.

Book The common writer in modern history

Download or read book The common writer in modern history written by Martyn Lyons and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book underlines the importance of writing for the subordinate classes, and the variety of uses to which it was put. In eleven new studies by thirteen leading historians of scribal culture, it foregrounds the ‘common writer’ and contributes to a ‘New History from Below’. The book presents pauper letters, ego-documents, life-writing of various kinds, soldiers’ and emigrants’ correspondence, handwritten newspapers and graffiti in streets and prisons, analysing the major genres of ‘ordinary writings’. The studies draw on different disciplines, including cultural history, sociology and ethnography, folklore studies, palaeography and socio-historical linguistics. They range from the early modern Hispanic Empire to twentieth-century Australia, including studies of modern Britain, Iceland, Finland, Italy, Germany, South Africa and the USA. The book demonstrates the importance of studying manuscript culture to give a voice, a presence and dignity to the ordinary protagonists of history.
