Book excerpt: In the Pentateuch, we find a unique theological principle called Separation, Placement and Rest (SPR). This cycle is presented in the context of God's Creation//Exodus dynamic activity. SPR is the major operating theology of the Old and New Testaments. SPR may also serve as an important strategy to enhance stewardship training in local churches. Churches have not yet developed proper theological strategies for encouraging faithful stewardship. Stewardship is, nevertheless, an integral part of Christian discipleship and originated from the very beginning of God's creation. In this postmodern age, churches face many challenges in pursuing God's will. Churches need to utilize innovative strategies now more than ever to raise strong disciples who can faithfully fulfill God's ongoing salvation creation-redemption work in Jesus Christ. As clearly stated in the parables of Jesus and world mission narratives in Luke-Acts, stewardship comprises a major aspect of discipleship; most Christians, however, are not fully informed of its impact in Christian life. Due to the absence of proper study, few pastors and church leaders are comfortable with teaching stewardship in their congregations. As a result, they struggle with their financial matters. The reasons behind this problem are that churches do not have essential resources and strategies for providing stewardship education in pursuit of their goal of converting followers of Jesus into disciples. Also they may misunderstand or resist the idea of tithing, which is also an integral part of spiritual discipline. SPR deals directly and interactively with God's ongoing Creation//Exodus dynamics in our lives. The principles of SPR guide us by means of God's agenda rather than our own. Thus we find ourselves in an ongoing dialogue and deeper relationship with God. SPR transforms ordinary questions into SPR questions, such as, "Am I holy?"; "Where is my place in the Scriptures?"; "Do I have a rest in God?"; and/or "What shall I do?" All these questions are subjective actions that can be applied to the "Separation-Placement-Rest" equation formula in the dynamics of God's "Creation and Exodus": SPRx=C//E. The SPR Bible study of Luke-Acts is a unique paradigm for stewardship, and will benefit church missions and revivals. SPR stewardship goes back to God's original purpose for the creation of man. By studying it, people can become extraordinary, transformational stewards who serve God by pursuing His missions. The challenges in our lives will be resolved and transformed into opportunities if we are able to apply SPR in our lives. Because SPR requires a constant dialogue with God, whoever applies SPR in his or her life will eventually become a faithful steward of Jesus Christ. The SPR reading of Luke-Acts in light of stewardship of churches will encourage and challenge Christian leaders to have useful strategies in their process of planting and managing the house of God, especially in our times of financial and spiritual uncertainty.

Book The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles

Download or read book The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles written by Franklin Scott Spencer and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces literary, historical, and theological issues of Luke and Acts. Biblical texts create worlds of meaning, and invite readers to enter them. When readers enter such textual worlds, which are often strange and complex, they are confronted with theological claims. With this in mind, the purpose of the Interpreting Biblical Texts series is to help serious readers in their experience of reading and interpreting by providing guides for their journeys into textual worlds. The controlling perspective is expressed in the operative word of the title--interpreting. The primary focus of the series is not so much on the world behind the texts or out of which the texts have arisen as on the worlds created by the texts in their engagement with readers. In keeping with the goals of the series, this volume provides an introductory guide to readers of the New Testament books of Luke and Acts. It focuses on both the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of the literature in an effort to acquaint readers with literary, historical, and theological issues that will facilitate interpretation of these important books. F. Scott Spencer is Professor of New Testament at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.

The global spread of contributors includes scholarly voices from South Africa, South America and Hong Kong, as well as from the United States. The chapters are organized around four themes. The first examines interpretations of Jesus, looking at his childhood, contemporary context, and his teaching – including whether Jesus' sympathetic response to disease and pain might be used to advocate euthanasia. The second examines social categories: gender, race, and class, including a political and racialized reading of the history of diasporic Black America as a model for reading Acts as a diasporic history. Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Luke Acts written by V. George Shillington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. George Shillington introduces readers to the text, texture and context of Luke-Acts in this tried and tested introduction, now in its second edition. Using various approaches currently practiced by biblical scholars Shillington outlines the methods of biblical interpretation and then shows how they might be applied to the texts in question. Through historical criticism Shillington looks at and explains questions of authorship, the time and setting of the composition, sources and historical background. Taking a social-science approach he examines the society and culture of the time. Literary readings include narrative, socio-rhetorical, and audience-response approaches, while a theological reading asks how the literary texture and themes of Luke-Acts shape the convictions of Christian communities, past and present. Incorporating modern approaches in the field, Shillington looks at postcolonial and feminist criticism and how they have changed our understanding of these books. Each chapter concludes with a list of further relevant resources, and pertinent review questions. The text is accompanied by charts and diagrams to illustrate key points of language and structure.

Book A Light to the Centurions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert R. Beck
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2019-05-23
  • ISBN : 1532656556
  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book A Light to the Centurions written by Robert R. Beck and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Robert Beck proposes to read Luke-Acts from the perspective of its implied reader. In making this reader a gentile sympathetic to Judaism, like the "God-fearing" centurions inscribed in his text, Luke reverses the empire-critical narrative perspectives of Mark and Matthew. And yet he profoundly challenges imperial cultural values. Luke launches his double narrative with Jesus' proclamation in the Nazareth synagogue. In lieu of the tradition of Ezra with its safeguarding customs, this programmatic announcement promises a path to the gentiles in the tradition of Third Isaiah, with both its releases and its risks. Luke shows a way for the outsider to enter into the traditions of Israel, and not replace them. This reading regards the full narrative sweep of Luke's double work. It yields a fresh look at his Gospel, as well as the largely neglected narrative structure of Acts.
