Book The Hungarian Language in the Digital Age

Download or read book The Hungarian Language in the Digital Age written by Georg Rehm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-13 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

Book Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town

Download or read book Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town written by Rogers Brubaker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated on the geographic margins of two nations, yet imagined as central to each, Transylvania has long been a site of nationalist struggles. Since the fall of communism, these struggles have been particularly intense in Cluj, Transylvania's cultural and political center. Yet heated nationalist rhetoric has evoked only muted popular response. The citizens of Cluj--the Romanian-speaking majority and the Hungarian-speaking minority--have been largely indifferent to the nationalist claims made in their names. Based on seven years of field research, this book examines not only the sharply polarized fields of nationalist politics--in Cluj, Transylvania, and the wider region--but also the more fluid terrain on which ethnicity and nationhood are experienced, enacted, and understood in everyday life. In doing so the book addresses fundamental questions about ethnicity: where it is, when it matters, and how it works. Bridging conventional divisions of academic labor, Rogers Brubaker and his collaborators employ perspectives seldom found together: historical and ethnographic, institutional and interactional, political and experiential. Further developing the argument of Brubaker's groundbreaking Ethnicity without Groups, the book demonstrates that it is ultimately in and through everyday experience--as much as in political contestation or cultural articulation--that ethnicity and nationhood are produced and reproduced as basic categories of social and political life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marshall Islands is a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 29 coral atolls and 5 islands, and covers a total land area of just over 70 square miles. Despite its small size, the Marshall Islands has a rich history and played a significant role in global events during the 20th century. The islands were first inhabited by indigenous people over 2,000 years ago, and were later colonized by Spain, Germany, and Japan. During World War II, the Marshall Islands were the site of several major battles between the United States and Japan, including the notorious Battle of Kwajalein. After the war, the islands became a trust territory of the United States, and in 1986 they gained full independence as the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Today, the Marshall Islands is a democracy with a unique culture and a strong connection to the ocean that surrounds it.

Unlike in other countries where bilingualism often survives over numerous generations, in the United States, it generally takes two or three generations for a minority language to be lost.
