Book Street Railway Development in Spokane

Download or read book Street Railway Development in Spokane written by Charles Vincent Mutschler and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The history of the development of an urban transportation system is dealt with in this paper. The subject is the street railway system which served Spokane, Washington from 1888 until 1936. The history of the traction industry in Spokane is viewed as being typical of the industry as a whole. The first chapter looks at the technological development, and at the nature of the street railway industry in the city of Spokane. Chapters Two through Seven deal with the development of the trolley network which was operated by the Washington Water Power Company, a local utility corporation. This firm acquired street railways built by other interests and consolidated them into its own corporate structure in 1899. The development of a competing system is covered in Chapters Eight and Nine, which describe the development of the Spokane Traction Company. The Spokane Traction Company took over one line which had been chartered in 1888, and for a brief period there was serious competition between it and the utility company before it became apparent that the city did not need two street railway systems. The increase of competition from other transportation systems, especially automobiles, coupled with rising operating costs forced fares up following World War I, and the municipal government began working to force a merger between the two street railway systems. This was done in 1922 following the use of jitney busses by the city as a weapon and is covered in Chapter Ten. Chapter Eleven briefly looks at the Spokane United Railways, the unified system created in 1922, which was never successfully able to compete with an ever increasing number of automobiles. In order to cut operating costs, the company began converting its operations from trolley cars to motor busses in the 1930's, completing the change in 1936. The last chapter expresses the view that the history of the street railways in Spokane is similar to that of street railways in other western cities. It concludes with a suggestion that future transit planners would be well advised to learn from past experience, and make realistic plans for future transit systems. The major sources used were the records of the Washington Water Power Company held by Eastern Washington University, Washington State University, and the Washington Water Power Company; area newspapers, particularly the Spokane Spokesman-Review; and the reports of the Wash- ington State Department of Public Parks and its predecessors"--Document.

Book Spokane International Railway

Download or read book Spokane International Railway written by Dale W. Jones and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last half of the 19th century was typified by tycoons and shrewd railroad barons. A key figure in the development of the Spokane International Railway was James Jerome Hill, or simply Jim Hill. Spokane businessmen regarded Hill as a tyrant and considered his Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads unwelcome monopolies in Northeast Washington and the Idaho Panhandle. In 1905, Daniel Chase "D.C." Corbin broke the Hill lines' stronghold by forming the Spokane International Railway as a 140-mile rail line from Spokane, Washington, to Eastport, Idaho, to interchange traffic from the Canadian border to the Pacific. Today, the route continues to be profitable under Union Pacific Railroad ownership with commodities shipped to Western markets via the Canadian Pacific Railway. This book shares the story of the Spokane International Railway and traces its international and local connections with every major railroad in the Pacific Northwest.
