Book Higher Order Mode Analysis of the APT Superconducting Cavities

Download or read book Higher Order Mode Analysis of the APT Superconducting Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In another contribution to this conference the design of superconducting cavities for low velocity proton beams will be reported. Besides an optimization of the rf properties of the accelerating [pi]-mode, other modes, possibly excited by the traversing proton beam, need to be regarded. The full spectrum of modes in [beta] = 0.64 and [beta] = 0.82 5-cell cavities, as proposed for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) facility, has been calculated up to frequencies higher than 2.0 GHz. These have been evaluated for their potential to affect the beam. The presence of {open_quotes}trapped{close_quotes} modes has also been investigated. In addition to the specific mode spectrum, the total power deposited into the cavities by the beam has been determined from the induced wake-fields. Due to the operation with beams below the velocity of light, extreme care was required to prevent incorrect results by wave reflections from the boundaries of the calculation volume. The simulations indicate that a power deposition of up to 17 W per cavity can be expected in the worst case. This power might have to be removed by higher order mode couplers, which is a technically feasible task. Transporting this power out to a room temperature dump does not even noticeably increase the requirements to the cryogenic system. Also for the prevention of beam break-up effects and for suppression of resonant excitation of specific higher order modes (HOMs) it is of interest to investigate the removal of this HOM-power. Different approaches to implement this removal technically are entertained.

Book Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities

Download or read book Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities written by Pei Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An energetic charged particle beam introduced to an rf cavity excites a wakefield therein. This wakefield can be decomposed into a series of higher order modes and multipoles, which for sufficiently small beam offsets are dominated by the dipole component. This work focuses on using these dipole modes to detect the beam position in third harmonic superconducting S-band cavities for light source applications. A rigorous examination of several means of analysing the beam position based on signals radiated to higher order modes ports is presented. Experimental results indicate a position resolution, based on this technique, of 20 microns over a complete module of 4 cavities. Methods are also indicated for improving the resolution and for applying this method to other cavity configurations. This work is distinguished by its clarity and potential for application to several other international facilities. The material is presented in a didactic style and is recommended both for students new to the field, and for scientists well-versed in the field of rf diagnostics.

Book Higher Order Mode Properties of Superconducting Two Spoke Cavities

Download or read book Higher Order Mode Properties of Superconducting Two Spoke Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-Spoke cavities lack the cylindrical symmetry that many other cavity types have, which leads to a more complex Higher Order Mode (HOM) spectrum. In addition, spoke cavities offer a large velocity acceptance which means we must perform a detailed analysis of the particle velocity dependence for each mode's R/Q. We present here a study of the HOM properties of two-spoke cavities designed for high-velocity applications. Frequencies, R/Q and field profiles of HOMs have been calculated and are reported.

Book High Precision Superconducting Cavity Diagnostics With Higher Order Mode Measurements

Download or read book High Precision Superconducting Cavity Diagnostics With Higher Order Mode Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments at the FLASH facility at DESY have demonstrated that the higher order modes induced in superconducting cavities can be used to provide a variety of beam and cavity diagnostics. The axes of the modes can be determined from the beam orbit that produces minimum power in the dipole HOM modes. The phase and amplitude of the dipole modes can be used to obtain high resolution beam position information, and the phase of the monopole modes to measure the beam phase relative to the accelerator rf. For most superconducting accelerators, the existing higher order mode couplers provide the necessary signals, and the downmix and digitizing electronics are straightforward, similar to those for a conventional beam position monitor.

Book RF Superconductivity for Accelerators

Download or read book RF Superconductivity for Accelerators written by Hasan Padamsee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces some of the key ideas of this exciting field, using a pedagogic approach, and presents a comprehensive overview of the field. It is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the basic concepts of microwave cavities for particle acceleration. The second part is devoted to the observed behavior of superconducting cavities. In the third part, general issues connected with beam-cavity interaction and the related issues for the critical components are covered. The final part discusses applications of superconducting cavities to frontier accelerators of the future, drawing heavily on the examples that are in their most advanced stage. Each part of the book ends in a Problems section to illustrate and amplify text material as well as draw on example applications of superconducting cavities to existing and future accelerators.

Book Standard Model And Just Beyond The Proceedings Of The 4th San Miniato Topical Seminar

Download or read book Standard Model And Just Beyond The Proceedings Of The 4th San Miniato Topical Seminar written by Francesco Luigi Navarria and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-07-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th San Miniato Topical Seminar on “The Standard Model and Just Beyond” was a continuation of the meetings held in 1985, 1987 and 1991, and covered essentially similar topics. The program focused on reviews of the present experimental progress in precise electroweak and QCD tests, heavy flavour physics (particularly mixing) and the search for new particles. The emphasis was on the most recent results coming from the large statistics data samples collected at LEP, other e+e- machines, hadron colliders and fixed target experiments. The present status of the theory was reviewed and one session was dedicated to the discussion of future plans and physics issues.

Book HIGH CURRENT SUPERCONDUCTING CAVITIES AT RHIC

Download or read book HIGH CURRENT SUPERCONDUCTING CAVITIES AT RHIC written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A five-cell high current superconducting cavity for the electron cooling project at RHIC is under fabrication. Higher order modes (HOMs), one of main limiting factors for high current energy-recovery operation, are under investigation. Calculations of HOMs using time-domain methods in Mafia will be discussed and compared to calculations in the frequency domain. Beam breakup thresholds determined from numerical codes for the five-cell cavity will be presented. A possible motivation towards a 2 x 2 superstructure using the current five-cell design will also be discussed.

Book Development of the Superconducting 3 9 GHz Accelerating Cavity at Fermilab

Download or read book Development of the Superconducting 3 9 GHz Accelerating Cavity at Fermilab written by H. Carter and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superconducting third harmonic 3.9 GHz accelerating cavity was proposed to improve the beam quality in the TTF-like photoinjector [1]. Fermilab has developed, built and tested several prototypes, including two copper 9-cell cavities, one niobium 3-cell cavity, and one 9-cell cavity. The helium vessel and frequency tuner for the 9-cell cavity was built and tested as well. In cold tests, we achieved a peak surface magnetic field of {approx}100mT, well above the 70mT specification. The accelerating gradient was likely limited by thermal breakdown. Studies of the higher order modes in the cavity revealed that the existing cavity design with two HOM couplers will provide sufficient damping of these modes. In this paper we discuss the cavity design, results of the studies and plans for further development.
