Forming Christians--leading fallen and flawed human beings into the path of discipleship to a crucified and risen Lord--is one of the central, if not the central, tasks of all Christian churches. It is a difficult enough task anywhere, but for African Americans, beset by racial conflict, personal crises, generational separation, and other concerns, it is especially so. African American churches must work particularly hard to counter the messages their members receive from the dominant and often unfriendly culture. This book employs the biblical text and African tradition to draw on the idea of the search for wisdom as a potent way to help African Americans in their pursuit of genuine Christian discipleship. Wisdom in African American tradition is not simply knowledge; rather, it is those insights, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors,and practices that create and sustain a life of hope and that produce an inherent sense of the worth of one's self. If their members are to engage in the search for wisdom, African American churches must build an intentional ministry of faith formation. Wisdom can be gained, the authors argue, when African Americans listen to the black oral tradition with its proverbial sayings, revered Bible stories, songs, and narratives from the lives of exemplary individuals. The book offers several similar avenues for the search for wisdom, including helpful models of black males mentoring younger black males, as a remedy to the destructive effects that contemporary culture has on this segment of the African American community.

The artist holds a B.S. degree and M.Ed. (Educational Administration)degree from Texas Southern University. While attending Texas Southern University Mr. Bell studied piano with Mrs. Thelma O. Bell and studied voice with Mrs. Ruth Schmoll for three years. Mr. Bell successfully attended the Harvard Principal Academy Institute in 1993. Mr. Bell studied church music at University of Houston in the mid 1990’s. In 2011 Mr. Bell became a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars- Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Houston Community College while pursuing a music degree at Texas Southern University. Mr. Bell sang with the Houston Symphnoy Chorale for two seasons under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Babikian, and Dr. Charles Hauseman during the early 1990’s. Mr. Bell taught for over twenty-five and has been an elementary classroom teacher, music teacher, Chapter I Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal all in the Houston Independent School District. Currently is Director of Bel-Lin's Music Studio in Houston, Texas. Mr. Bell’s avocation and passion for church music has been around four decades where he has served in the Houston and neighboring communities, and frequently serves as musical consultant for local, state and regional religious and civic organizations. He also is the author of an semi-autobiography about growing up in Houston entitled Kid’s Can’t Be Kids Anymore. He has recorded two CD recordings of inspirational music. He has composed one major religious easter cantata work entitled ‘Hear The Word of The Lord' premeire ecumenical performance in 1987 at the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church-Houston, Texas and in 1992 at the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church-Houston. He also is the composer of many songs sung in the black worship service. His favorite and most well-liked is The Lord Is My Shepherd. He has sung with the Houston Symphony Chorale-Chorus under the direction of the late Virgina Babikian and Dr. Charles Hauseman. He received the National Reading is Fundamental Award...Leaders in Literacy Award in 1994 in Houston, Texas. Those who know the author have often described him as being very talented, inquisitive, very ambitious, a computer whiz-enthuiast, an outgoing fellow, very diligent, and energetic. He always wears an incesasant smile, is quite humorous, and is always willing to help others whenever he can. He is very versatile. Mrs. Elnoir Walton of Houston, Texas, says of Mr. Bell, "the author presents himself as a Christian person who has the love of God in him and reflects this in his conversation and actions. He has a pleasing personality that everyone who is around him enjoys." The author is married to the former Linda Joyce Fuller of Houston, Texas, and is the father of RaKeisha Monet’(Son-Inlaw Cedric) and John (II)Jr.. They reside in Southeast Houston. Mr. Bell enjoys several hobbies for both relaxation and inspiration; they are oil painting, cooking, reading, socializing, and traveling. Book excerpt: Spiritual formation, the practice of intentional spiritual disciplines like fasting, silence, studying, and fellowship, should be the heart of growth in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina small churches. This practice assists congregants in developing closeness with God and relationships with others. Amidst a steady decline in national church attendance since 1992, few of today’s African-American Church ministries address the need for spiritual formation. This thesis explores this critical issue at the local level through interviews with pastors and church leaders, who describe their churches’ current efforts to foster spiritual formation in congregants. The findings are used to propose a model for local church leadership to promote community members’ spiritual formation. This model includes the thesis of applicable biblical passages and encourages attention to the Great Commission and Great Commandment of Christ–which all can assist church leadership in revitalizing missions, operations, and their commitments to developing the local African-American Church.

Book excerpt: Jerrilyn McGregory explores sacred music and spiritual activism in a little-known region of the South, the Wiregrass Country of Georgia, Alabama, and North Florida. She examines African American sacred music outside of Sunday church-related activities, showing that singing conventions and anniversary programs fortify spiritual as well as social needs. In this region African Americans maintain a social world of their own creation. Their cultural performances embrace some of the most pervasive forms of African American sacred music—spirituals, common meter, Sacred Harp, shape-note, traditional, and contemporary gospel. Moreover, the contexts in which they sing include present-day observations such as the Twentieth of May (Emancipation Day), Burial League Turnouts, and Fifth Sunday. Rather than tracing the evolution of African American sacred music, this ethnographic study focuses on contemporary cultural performances, almost all by women, which embrace all forms. These women promote a female-centered theology to ensure the survival of their communities and personal networks. They function in leadership roles that withstand the test of time. Their spiritual activism presents itself as a way of life. In Wiregrass Country, “You don't have to sing like an angel” is a frequently expressed sentiment. To these women, “good” music is God's music regardless of the manner delivered. Therefore, Downhome Gospel presents gospel music as being more than a transcendent sound. It is local spiritual activism that is writ large. Gospel means joy, hope, expectation, and the good news that makes the soul glad.
