Download or read book Spiritual Studies in St John s Gospel written by Arthur Ritchie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Studies in St. John's Gospel, Vol. 7 So wonderfully do the two circumstances seem to coincide and run parallel throughout, that of our Lord's freely and spontaneously submitting Himself to death, as the great High Priest Who offered up Himself as a perfect Sacrifice; and that of His enemies, all tiding a part in His death, and laying their hands as it were on the head of the Victim. To His question, Whom seek ye? they reply Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am He (or I am.) And Judas, who betrayed Him, stood among them. When therefore He said unto them, I am He, they went backward and fell to the ground. They spoke of Him by that most blessed but most dreadful Name, at which every knee shall bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth. The prophet and the historian describe our Lord's enemies, and His own resignation and courage, in much the same characters. When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host of men were laid against me, yet shall not my heart be afraid. By this circumstance they might have perceived that they had no power to apprehend Him, if He were not a willing captive; for even when He was present before their eyes, they could not know nor acknowledge Him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Studies in St. John's Gospel, Vol. 5: Chapters XIII XV Isaac Williams says: May we not under stand the saying, What I do than knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter, in either of three senses - this thou shalt know hereafter, when I explain it to you by and by, to night; or by the teaching of the Spirit in Christ's kingdom; or the fulness of this wisdom con tained in this lesson thou canst only know here after in heaven. And St. Chrysostom indeed proceeds to imply that such mysterious doctrine is contained in the practical lesson, When thou shalt cast out evil spirits in my name, and shalt see me carried up into heaven, and shalt be taught by the Spirit that I sit at the Right Hand, then shalt thou understand what now hath been done. From which it seems that Chrysostom supposed the action to have some thing in it peculiar to the Apostles as prepara tory to their apostolical or sacerdotal office, in dependently of the general instruction. They ask, not to be instructed by Him in the way where they now were, but ask for His abode, which is, says St. Cyril, the Church, in which He abides.
