Book excerpt: From an author and ministry consultant, seven practices for taking your religious leadership from good to great. Often spiritual leaders do not aspire to greatness for fear of seeming to lack humility. Yet greatness in spiritual leadership is just what we need—in our churches, our businesses, in education, in the social sector, in every sector of society. The question is how do good spiritual leaders become great leaders? Based on his extensive experience as coach and mentor to many thousands of Christian leaders across a broad spectrum of ministry settings, Reggie McNeal helps spiritual leaders understand that they will self-select into or out of greatness. McNeal shows how great spiritual leaders are committed intentionally to seven spiritual disciplines, habits of heart and mind that shape both their character and competence: *The discipline of self-awareness—the single most important information a leader possesses *The discipline of self-management—handling difficult emotions, expectations, temptations, as well as mental and physical well-being *The discipline of self-development—a life-long commitment to learning and growing and building on one's strengths *The discipline of mission—maintaining the sense of God's purpose in your life *The discipline of decision-making—knowing the elements of good decisions and learning from failure *The discipline of belonging—nurturing relationships and living in community with others *The discipline of aloneness—the intentional practice of solitude and contemplation “Practicing Greatness is a hard-hitting leadership book.” —from the Foreword by Ken Blanchard, author of The One-Minute Manager and Lead Like Jesus: Lessons from the Greatest Leadership Role Model of All Time

Book Celebration of Discipline

Download or read book Celebration of Discipline written by Richard J. Foster and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1988-10-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years since its publication, Celebration of Discipline has helped over a million seekers discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. For this special twentieth anniversary edition, Richard J. Foster has added an introduction, in which he shares the story of how this beloved and enduring spiritual guidebook came to be. Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the "classic Disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith. Along the way, Foster shows that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to spiritual growth can be found. Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. The inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study, offer avenues of personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service, help prepare us to make the world a better place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration, bring us nearer to one another and to God. Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how these Disciplines can become part of our daily activities-and how they can help us shed our superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." He offers crucial new insights on simplicity, demonstrating how the biblical view of simplicity, properly understood and applied, brings joy and balance to our inward and outward lives and "sets us free to enjoy the provision of God as a gift that can be shared with others." The discussion of celebration, often the most neglected of the Disciplines, shows its critical importance, for it stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline will help motivate Christians everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer and spiritual growth.

Book Transformed Leadership

Download or read book Transformed Leadership written by Gary Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need of the church in America today is holiness. When lives are transformed, wholeness and holiness result. Scripture provides the basis for transformation to take place, and addressing this must include spiritual disciplines. Prayer, confession, Bible study and other spiritual disciplines need to be practiced to build every believer s relationship with God and grow into His likeness. In this way, individuals and church leaders each become more effective in their spiritual lives. The more disciplines are practiced, the more effective leadership marks become apparent among the body of believers. As a result, the church becomes healthier. When its leaders are transformed, the whole church benefits. This book intentionally addresses four groups in the church. First, all people attending church will be challenged to practice spiritual disciplines. It will also challenge those who are training for Christian leadership, as well as pulpit committees, to stress that spiritual disciplines need to be found in a Christian leader. Finally, pastors will be challenged to personally incorporate spiritual disciplines into daily life to an even greater degree than before and urge the people they shepherd to do the same. Spiritual disciplines supply the supportive structure for the transformation of Romans 12:1-2 to take place. More than ever before, leaders are searching for answers in order to move the church in the right direction. Short-term success appears to be more popular among God s people than long-term effectiveness. The practice of spiritual disciplines will build and deepen spiritual lives. Core spiritual disciplines are foundational to build effective leadership marks in the lives of believers. Gary s desire in ministry is to be out of work to train and develop spiritual leaders in the church who can do the work of the ministry. Paul s final words to the elders in Ephesus were, Guard yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood (Acts 20:28). He then followed up with his benediction; Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace. Feeding on the Word and maintaining an intimate, trusting relationship with God are the keys that Gary emphasizes in this fine book. As my pastor, I have often heard him comment, That s not a hill worth dying on. There are many projects and programs that could be pushed in the church some good, most not worth dying for. But the one thing that is lacking is the development of men and women of God who consistently practice core spiritual disciplines. Character counts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated life lessons that will guide and shape the spiritual formation of Christian leaders. Like E. Stanley Jones, the authors show how you can experience God and launch into the adventure of a lifetime. By conforming to the life Jesus Christ, become a leader who is always a "Christian-in- the-making." From the book: "Amid a sea of spiritual options, this is the fundamental truth upon which true Christian spirituality builds: we live on a visited planet. Other great religions emphasize a philosophy of life, moral teachings, spiritual disciplines, or techniques...By contrast, Christianity focuses on Jesus. It announces the appearance of a flesh and blood person who perfectly embodied his own teachings, actually forgave his enemies, and willingly offered himself on a cross."

Book Rediscovering the Spiritual Disciplines for Today s Ministry Leadership A Journey of Proactive Spiritual Formation for Leaders

Download or read book Rediscovering the Spiritual Disciplines for Today s Ministry Leadership A Journey of Proactive Spiritual Formation for Leaders written by Dr. Steve A. Maglio and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military chaplains are highly trained professionals with multiple graduate degrees and varying civilian pastoral experience. They enter the chaplaincy after a rigorous selection process and military courses, which all must verify their calling to military ministry. Throughout a chaplain’s career, he or she will attend many continuing education seminars, civilian education graduate programs, and conferences, all provided by the military. However, chaplains are challenged with the rigorous multitasked environment of this ministry. Multiple deployments into combat have negatively impacted the personal lives of those seeking to care for the souls of the soldier. This book encourages the importance of spiritual resiliency in the lives of leaders, both military and civilian. Leaders who regularly practice spiritual disciplines will be less likely to suffer personal and professional failure, or burnout. Second, the leader’s practice of spiritual disciplines is essential to fostering positive modeling and mentoring for young chaplains and those wishing to serve. Third, practicing historic Christian spiritual disciplines will benefit those who strive to lead congregations and especially military installations in the free exercise of their faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is spirituality? For some, it means nothing more than vague self-improvement pulled from the latest best-selling self-help book. For others, it refers to some generic religious practice. Shedding life-giving light on what often remains ill-defined and unclear, this book sets forth a vision of biblical spirituality—“a renewed sense of the momentousness of being alive in God’s world as God’s people are led by God’s Spirit through God’s Word unto godly, Christlike character.” With careful exegetical work and theological reflection, the contributors—pastors and scholars such as Christopher W. Morgan, Paul R. House, Nathan A. Finn, and Gregg R. Allison—address spirituality from the perspective of the Bible, exploring topics such as the Trinity, divine sovereignty and human responsibility, the “already” and “not yet,” and the church. This book also addresses practical questions about spirituality related to the workplace, disciplines of the body, and more.

Board directors, church members, and staff alike are all eagerly seeking leaders who effectively integrate their spirituality and leadership. Pastors and executives, however, often struggle with knowing how to integrate their spiritual values and practices into their leadership and management roles. Designed for pastors, executives, administrators, managers, coordinators, and all who see themselves as leaders and who want to fulfill their God-given purpose, The Spirit-Led Leader addresses the critical fusion of spiritual life and leadership for those who not only want to see results, but who also desire to care just as deeply about who they are and how they lead as they do about what they produce and accomplish. Geoffrion creates a new vision for spiritual leadership as partly an art, partly a result of careful planning, and always a working of the grace of God

Book Leading with Love

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first principle of ministry leadership is love--love that emerges from life rooted in God. We might have decent skills for leading a human institution or getting people involved in church, but truly transformative ministry calls us to lead God's people into the depths of spiritual life, those places where love is activated fully. Before we can help others, though, we must first cultivate this love in ourselves. In Leading with Love, Elaine Robinson helps ministry professionals recognize that healthy leadership requires a deeper spirituality that enlivens us to move beyond rigid, dualistic frameworks. Only through life in Christ can we cope with and creatively address the challenges of ministry in an era characterized by a lack of trust in institutions and the anxieties of global pandemic, political division, and uncertainty about the future. Robinson provides practical tools for cultivating spiritual practices that lead ministers into the world as agents of faith, hope, love, and justice. With its thematically targeted chapters and questions for reflection, readers will finish Robinson's book feeling refreshed and equipped for the good work of love that lies ahead.

Earl Creps explores twelve central spiritual disciplines—six personal and six organizational—that Christian leaders of all ages and denominations need if they are to change themselves and their churches to reach out to the culture around them.
