Book Solving the Samaritan Riddle

Download or read book Solving the Samaritan Riddle written by Kermit Zarley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to solve the Samaritan riddle that is the focal point of the Dunn Debate. Dr. James D. G. Dunn's first book, Baptism in the Holy Spirit (1970), claims the New Testament says baptism in the Holy Spirit always occurs simultaneously at conversion-initiation. In contrast, classical Pentecostals contend that Spirit baptism always occurs subsequent to conversion and is evidenced by tongues-speaking. They mostly cite Acts 8:4-25 for "subsequence." It says Philip preached to the Samaritans and they "believed," but they did not receive the Spirit until Peter and John came days later and laid hands on them. Dunn says these Samaritans and Jesus' 120 Jewish disciples in Acts 2 were not "Christians" until they were baptized with the Holy Spirit. Zarley agrees with Pentecostals about subsequence in both cases. But he claims these Samaritans and the Gentiles in Acts 10 were Spirit baptized due to Peter's presence, using his metaphorical "keys of the kingdom" Jesus had promised to give him in Matt 16:19. After Peter opened kingdom doors for all three of these biblical classifications of people, all people afterwards are Spirit baptized simultaneously upon conversion, as Paul teaches and Dunn says, except for the Ephesians anomaly in Acts 19:1-7.

Book The Corinthian Body

  • Release : 1999-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300081725
  • Pages : 356 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In this intriguing discussion of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, Dale Martin contends that Paul's various disagreements with the Corinthians were the result of a fundamental conflict over the ideological construction of the human body (and hence the church as the body of Christ). This led to differing opinions on a variety of theological viewpoints--including the role of rhetoric and philosophy in a hierarchical society, the eating of meat sacrificed to idols, prostitution, sexual desire and marriage, and the resurrection of the body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters is a one-of-a-kind reference work. No other resource presents as much information focused exclusively on Pauline theology, literature, background, and scholarship. This second edition is a thoroughly revised and updated version of the acclaimed 1993 publication. Since that groundbreaking volume was published, developments in Pauline studies have continued at a rapid pace, with diverse new scholars entering the conversation, new ideas and methods gaining attention, and fresh expressions of old topics shaping the present discussion. Those who enjoyed and benefited from the wealth in the first edition will find this new edition an equally indispensable and freshly up-to-date companion to study and research. Classic topics such as Christology, justification, hermeneutics, and book studies of individual epistles receive careful treatment by specialists in the field. Topics new to this edition—including Paul and politics, patronage, and interpretations from various historical and cultural perspectives—expand the volume's breadth and usefulness. Over 95% of the articles have been written specifically for this edition. This work bridges the gap between scholars and pastors, teachers and students, and all interested readers who want a thorough treatment of key topics in a summary format. In curating and compiling these articles, the editors have sought to make them comprehensive, accessible, and useful for those pursuing further research on particular subjects. Each article's bibliography, in addition, will serve a new generation of readers for years to come. The updated Dictionary of Paul and His Letters takes its place alongside the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, 2nd ed., and the other volumes in the IVP Bible Dictionary Series as a unique presentation of the fruit of biblical studies—committed to Scripture, using the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialogue with both contemporary scholarship and the challenges facing the church. The reference volumes in the series provide in-depth treatment of biblical and theological topics in an accessible encyclopedia format, including cross-sectional themes, methods of interpretation, significant historical or cultural background, and each Old and New Testament book as a whole.

  • Author : William P. Atkinson
  • Publisher : Lutterworth Press
  • Release : 2012-08-30
  • ISBN : 0718840844
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Baptism in the Spirit written by William P. Atkinson and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a clear understanding of the doctrine of baptism in the Holy Spirit. In the Seventies, James Dunn's publication of Baptism in the Holy Spirit gave rise to a heated debate within Pentecostals' milieu. Atkinson brings his contribution to the discussion and undertakes the job of synthesizing, evaluating and reviewing the key elements of the debate, with respect to Luke-Acts. Atkinson concludes that Pentecostals are right: for Luke, receiving the Spirit was not the inception of new covenant life; itwas a powerful enabling for prophecy and miracles; for the church's outward mission and its internal life.

Book The Kingdom according to Luke and Acts

Download or read book The Kingdom according to Luke and Acts written by Karl Allen Kuhn and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial, reliable introduction examines the character and purpose of Luke and Acts and provides a thorough yet economical treatment of Luke's social, historical, and literary context. Karl Allen Kuhn presents Luke's narrative as a "kingdom story" that both announces the arrival of God's reign in Jesus and describes the ministry of the early church, revealing the character of the kingdom as dramatically at odds with the kingdom of Rome. Kuhn explores the background, literary features, plotting, and themes of Luke and Acts but also offers significant, fresh insights into the persuasive force of Luke's impressively crafted and rhetorically charged narrative.

Book The Spirituality of Paul

Download or read book The Spirituality of Paul written by Leslie Hardin and published by Kregel Academic. This book was released on 2016 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional venues for making sense of the complicated apostle Paul are history and theology. Indeed, one cannot understand him apart from either. However, something is still missing from our portrait of Paul. Rather than thinking of Paul as a theologian and an apostle, Leslie Hardin argues there is great benefit in approaching him as a disciple, a Spirit-filled man who wanted to pass vibrant spirituality on to those he encountered. In The Spirituality of Paul, Hardin uncovers the things Paul practiced in his own life, and those he taught his followers, in order to attempt to live an authentic, Spirit-filled Christian life. Hardin points out that in order to foster the power of the Spirit, Paul, like each of us, had to dedicate himself to everyday routines and practices. What were those spiritual disciplines? How did they help him? And how might they be applied in our modern lives to bring us closer to Christ? Whether a general reader or mature believer, the reader of this book will find Paul to be a true brother, a fellow sinner receiving grace.

These essays have been brought together as a Festschrift in order to celebrate the influence, scholarship, and teaching career of John Wesley Wyckoff, a noted figure in the Assemblies of God and a known voice in the Pentecostal dialogue.
