Book Nanoscale Studies of Spin Dynamics in Confined Geometries Using Soft X ray Transmission Microscopy

Download or read book Nanoscale Studies of Spin Dynamics in Confined Geometries Using Soft X ray Transmission Microscopy written by Brooke Lu Mesler and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and controlling the manipulation of spin structures on a nanometer length scale is of primary importance to contemporary scientific investigations and future technological applications of magnetic materials. Soft x-ray transmission microscopy offers imaging with a spatial resolution down to 10 nm, and a temporal resolution of about 70 psec, with element specific magnetic contrast. As such, it is an ideal method for studying fast nanoscale spin dynamics. The focus of this dissertation is on imaging the response of magnetic vortex cores to external applied fields using soft x-ray transmission microscopy. A technique for pinpointing vortex dynamics without time resolution was used to survey the response of a vortex core to RF fields of varying frequency and amplitude. This investigation revealed an unexpected nonlinear response of the vortex core at higher amplitude driving frequencies. Time-resolved images of the vortex core response in the linear regime were taken using a technique which phase-locked the RF driving field to the x-ray imaging pulses. These experimental images probing the frequency response of the vortex core motion are the initial step towards a deeper understanding of the behavior of the vortex core when driven by magnetic fields with frequencies near its resonant frequency. In addition to investigating the dynamic response of a single vortex core, a magnetic system with two interacting vortex cores was studied. A patterned rectangular magnetic sample with a 7-domain magnetization configuration and two vortex cores at remanence was used in this experiment. The magnetization of this sample was imaged after the application of a fast magnetic field pulse using a pump-probe time-resolved imaging technique. The images taken showed a distortion of the vortex cores after the pulse was applied, and combined with simulation, these results provide strong evidence for the creation and annihilation of vortex-antivortex core pairs during the excitation of the initial vortices. This lends support to the many theories suggesting that a vortex-antivortex core pair is created and annihilated during the switching of vortex core polarity. The studies outlined in this dissertation demonstrate the strength of transmission soft x-ray microscopy as a tool for investigating spin dynamics.

Book Manipulation of Magnetic Vortex Dynamics Revealed by Optical and Single spin Microscopy

Download or read book Manipulation of Magnetic Vortex Dynamics Revealed by Optical and Single spin Microscopy written by Robert Badea and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we study the magnetodynamics of a ferromagnetic vortex state confined by a thin film microdisk. The vortex state is a topological defect spin configuration and is an exciting platform for many potential applications including spintronic devices, information processing, biomedical technology, and spin-qubit integrated systems. We use sensitive differential magneto-optical Kerr effect and single-spin microscopy to probe the dynamics of the vortex core allowing us to identify and characterize the pinning landscape through which it traverses. We then develop protocols for fast nanosecond time scale translation of the vortex core between neighboring stable pinning sites. With these tools developed we ultimately use the vortex core to coherently manipulate a spin qubit. By coupling the qubit to the vortex state we enhance level splitting and spin dynamics allowing us to perform a more efficient adiabatic passage operation.

Book Stochastic Formation of Magnetic Vortex Structures in Asymmetric Disks Triggered by Chaotic Dynamics

Download or read book Stochastic Formation of Magnetic Vortex Structures in Asymmetric Disks Triggered by Chaotic Dynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 5620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The non-trivial spin configuration in a magnetic vortex is a prototype for fundamental studies of nanoscale spin behaviour with potential applications in magnetic information technologies. Arrays of magnetic vortices interfacing with perpendicular thin films have recently been proposed as enabler for skyrmionic structures at room temperature, which has opened exciting perspectives on practical applications of skyrmions. An important milestone for achieving not only such skyrmion materials but also general applications of magnetic vortices is a reliable control of vortex structures. However, controlling magnetic processes is hampered by stochastic behaviour, which is associated with thermal fluctuations in general. Here we show that the dynamics in the initial stages of vortex formation on an ultrafast timescale plays a dominating role for the stochastic behaviour observed at steady state. Our results show that the intrinsic stochastic nature of vortex creation can be controlled by adjusting the interdisk distance in asymmetric disk arrays.

Book Spin Wave Confinement

Download or read book Spin Wave Confinement written by Sergej O. Demokritov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent scientific achievements in the investigation of magnetization dynamics in confined magnetic systems. Introduced by Bloch as plane waves of magnetization in unconfined ferromagnets, spin waves currently play an important role for description of very small systems.Spin wave confinement effect was experimentally discovered in the 1990s in permalloy microstripes. The diversity of systems where this effect is observed has been steadily growing since then, most of which will be addressed in this book. The book includes six chapters which originate from different groups of experimentalists and theoreticians dominating the field since the discovery of the effect. Different chapters of the book reflect different facets of spin wave confinement, providing a comprehensive description of the effect and its place in modern magnetism. It will be of value for scientists and engineers working on magnetic storage elements and magnetic logic, and is also suitable as an advanced textbook for graduate students.

Book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics

Download or read book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics written by Teruo Ono and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical behavior of magnetic domain wall (DW) is one of the main issues in the field of spintronics. In this chapter, several experimental studies in DW dynamics in nanomagnetic systems are described. For the study of DW motion in nanoscale wires, samples with a trilayer structure, ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic, were prepared and the position of DW was estimated from electrical resistance measurements using giant magnetoresistance principle. The velocity of DW driven by an external field has been evaluated from the resistance change. On the other hand, current-driven DW motion in a single wire of ferromagnetic layer was studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). All-electrical control and local detection of multiple magnetic DWs are also shown. Magnetic vortex structures are realized in nanoscale ferromagnetic dot systems. The behavior of vortex core magnetization was observed by MFM. Recent topics such as the switching of vortex core driven by a high frequency AC are introduced. Furthermore, all-electrical operation of a magnetic vortex core memory cell is demonstrated.
