Book Spillway for Markland Locks and Dam Ohio River Kentucky and Indiana Hydraulic Model Investigation

Download or read book Spillway for Markland Locks and Dam Ohio River Kentucky and Indiana Hydraulic Model Investigation written by B. R. Gilcrest and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model investigations of the spillway for Markland Dam were concerned initially with a design using a split-leaf vertical-lift gate, and finally with a design using five submergible and seven nonsubmergible tainter gates. Section models reproducing one gate bay and adjacent half gate bays at scales of 1:36 (vertical-lift gate) and 1:25 (tainter gates) were used for study of gate hoist loads and vibration tendencies due to hydraulic forces, and stilling basin performance. Also, a 1:4-scale model of a section of the face of the submergible tainter gate and the downstream face of the gate sill was used for detailed study of pressure conditions and observation of the behavior of an inflatable-type bottom seal for the gate. A satisfactory design for the more economical plan using tainter gates was developed. Loads on the submergible tainter gate due to hydraulic forces were not excessive, and with the top of the gate shaped so as to ensure positive pressures, oscillation of the gate is considered unlikely. Tests in the 1:4-scale model revealed that the gap between the face of the gate and the gate sill must not flare more than about 1 in. in order to maintain relatively stable pressures on the gate and sill. Tests of the bottom seal disclosed undesirable flutter when the seal was deflated and the gate submerged; this seal was abandoned for Markland Dam.

Download or read book Spillway for Cannelton locks and dam Ohio River Kentucky and Indiana written by Glenn A. Pickering and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model tests were conducted on a 1:36-scale section model which reproduced one central gate bay and approximately half of each adjacent gate bay. Tests were conducted on spillways utilizing both submergible and nonsubmergible tainter gates. Tests were concerned with weir crest shape, discharge characteristics, gate radius and trunnion position, stilling basin performance, and riprap requirements downstream from the stilling basin. Book Spillway Greenup Locks and Dam Ohio River Kentucky and Indiana Hydraulic Model Investigation

Download or read book Spillway Greenup Locks and Dam Ohio River Kentucky and Indiana Hydraulic Model Investigation written by E. S. Melsheimer and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenup Dam spillway (now being constructed on the Ohio River) will consist of nine 100-ft-wide gate bays, flow through which will be regulated by five submergible and four nonsubmergible tainter gates. A horizontal apron surmounted by baffle piers and an end sill will dissipate energy created by flow passing over or under the tainter gates. Bulkheads will be provided for emergency closure of the spillway bays. Investigations conducted in a 1:25-scale section model reproducing one gate bay and adjacent half bays were concerned with: (a) hoist loads and vibration tendencies of the submergible tainter gate; (b) the performance of the stilling basin below both the submergible and nonsubmergible gates; and (c) hydraulic forces acting in a vertical direction on the emergency bulkheads when they were operated in one-, two-, three-, and four-bulkhead units.

Book Spillway Hannibal Locks and Dam Ohio River Ohio and West Virginia

Download or read book Spillway Hannibal Locks and Dam Ohio River Ohio and West Virginia written by Glenn A. Pickering and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spillway at Hannibal Dam will consist of eight 110-ft-wide bays through which flow will be regulated by tainter gates. Energy dissipation will be accomplished in a stilling basin consisting of a horizontal apron, baffle piers, and an end sill. Model investigations were conducted on a 1:36-scale section model which reproduced one central gate bay and approximately half of each adjacent gate bay. Tests were concerned with discharge characteristics, stilling basin performance, and riprap requirements for the transition downstream from the gate bay and the fixed-crest weir adjoining the left abutment. The spillway rating curves were determined for both full and partial gate openings. The size of protective stone required for adequate protection of the transition downstream from the gate bay and the fixed-crest weir was determined. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spillway at Belleville Dam will consist of eight 110-ft-wide bays through which flow will be regulated by tainter gates. Energy dissipation will be accomplished in a stilling basin with a horizontal apron, baffle piers, and an end sill. Model investigations were conducted on a 1:36-scale section model which reproduced one central gate bay and approximately half of each adjacent gate bay. Tests were concerned with gate sill shape, stilling basin performance, and riprap requirements downstream from the stilling basin. Tests revealed that flow conditions were satisfactory for all partial gate openings with the original design gate sill shape. The original design stilling basin resulted in high bottom velocities in the exit channel which were reduced by lowering the elevation of the basin apron. The stability of a stone protection blanket placed on a 1-on-6 slope downstream from the end sill was determined. (Author).
