Download or read book Speed Bumps on a Dirt Road written by John Cohen and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speed Bumps on a Dirt Roadis a living document of country music's founding fathers and mothers. John Cohen photographed musicians, at home, backstage at public events, from the wings at fiddlers' conventions, out in country music parks, and in the studio for live radio show performances and recording sessions. Back in 1961 it was still possible to know a few of America's original country musicians from the '20s and '30s. Renowned and celebrated musician and artist John Cohen came of age at the confluence of old time and early bluegrass music, the historic intersection of traditional and folk music. Cohen traveled the country playing music, recording, and documenting what was to be a generation of musicians who would influence American music and culture for decades to come. Traveling between the Union Grove fiddlers' convention to the Grand Ole Opry to a coal celebration in Hazard, Kentucky, Cohen made historic photographs of performers like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, the country's very first all-bluegrass show, and a bluegrass bar in Baltimore, among much more.Speed Bumps on a Dirt Roadpresents old time music as the root of country music. Includes photographs of: Flatt & Scruggs, fiddler "Eck" Robertsonin Amarillo, Texas, Doc Watson, bluegrass fiddler "Tex" Logan, the Stanley Brothers at Sunset Park, Sara and Maybelle of the Carter Family, and Cousin Emmy, Alice & Hazel, and a dulcimer in a parking lot.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Riding in the Zone

Download or read book Riding in the Zone written by Ken Condon and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riding motorcycles is fun, but author Ken Condon maintains that there is a state of consciousness to be achieved beyond the simple pleasure of riding down the road. Riding in the Zone helps riders find that state of being. It's the experience of being physically and mentally present in the moment, where every sense is sharply attuned to the ride. Your mind becomes silent to the chatter of daily life, and everyday problems seem to dissolve. You feel a deeper appreciation for life. Your body responds to this state of being with precise, fluid movements, you feel in balance, your muscles are relaxed, and it seems as though every input you make is an expression of mastery. This is "the Zone." Condon identifies all of the factors that affect entering the Zone and addresses each one individually, from the development of awareness and mental skills to mastering physical control of the motorcycle. At the end of each chapter are drills designed to transform the book's ideas into solid, practical riding skills. Riding in the Zone takes riders to the next level in their skill set.

Download or read book Justice written by E.L. Thorne and published by . This book was released on with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a closed door, clean, supernatural suspense, coming of age romance. The language has been toned down and the books have been specifically reworked for those who do not particularly enjoy open door romances. Maisie Malone’s got a problem. It started out at 22 and inches, 8 pounds, 12 ounces. It’s grown to 30 inches and 21 pounds. She doesn’t consider it much of a problem at all. More like a blessing. But she’s not the only one who wants this bouncing baby boy in her life. He’s got a grandfather with a hell of a mean streak and enough money to buy practically anyone. And said grandfather wants no loose ends. To make matters worse? The bouncing baby boy has fur and growls. Semi-retired bodyguard turned bounty hunter, Judd Walker would just as much rather be left alone in his cabin on the outskirts of Crooked Arrow Ranch as he would keep company with anyone. But hey, even a solitary wolf shifter needs to bring some money in once in a while. So when Paul MacIntosh offers him an ungodly amount to find his missing grandson and bring him home to Bitter Hollow, Judd has no problem accepting the job. How hard can it be to bring a one-year-old little boy home? Judd didn’t count on the tenacity and protectiveness of a mother. Even a human mother. He also didn’t count on Paul MacIntosh having a hidden agenda, one which did not include Maisie Malone breathing.

Book orphans of a secret war

Download or read book orphans of a secret war written by bruce anderson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To beat the traffic, rise above it, else you need a miracle. Orphans of the Secret War is a witty, sad, entertaining book narrated by a young "loog-kruenk" boy. An Asian-American child born to a Thai mother and an absent American father. He writes about his growing-up years in a small Thai village during the Secret War that was waged in Laos by the US against the North Vietnamese. In scope and content, the novel is reminiscent of Tom Brown's School Days and Huckleberry Finn, but with a broader world view of events. This is not a children's book, however. As an adjunct to the primary war the US engaged in a little publicized, tactical war against the North Vietnamese in Laos. To help in this effort, Thailand allowed the US to station troops in a number of cities across Thailand, including Udon Thani, in the North. Like a good omen- the rich foreign soldiers came, brining new economic opportunities to this deprived, neglected region of rural Isaan. The author presents, in a simple and entertaining style, his recollections of the life and times of his family during the occupation of Tahaan Falaangs in Udon. More broadly, Bruce portrays the effect of this American military base on the life of impoverished rice farmers in Northeast Thailand. He helps you understand how the presence of the base and the soldiers changed the culture and values of the entire region. Most importantly, Bruce provides the reader with a visceral, empathetic portrait of what happened to the Isaan people once the air base closed and the soldiers returned home. These post-conflict effects are seldom publicized, but they are very real and much longer lasting that the war itself. --
