This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches on the Canadian Pacific Railway, and on the Financial Industrial: Delivered in the House of Commons on the Evenings of the *Th February and the 4th March, 1884, Respectively Then we were told by the hon. Gentleman, contrary I think to what everybody has thought heretofore, that the railway is not such a railway as we ought fairly to expect, and we have had a reference made to the gradients in the Rocky Mountains which, he says, are somewhere about 116 feet to the mile. That seems a very heavy gradient I admit. I be lieve it extends from the summit to the Columbia river, somew'ierc about ten miles in length but it is not as high a gradient as is to be found on the American Pacific Rail ways, nor ashigh as that which you will find onarailway which is to-day almost a con trolling line in eastern and western transport - the Baltimore and Ohio road. On that rail way there is a gradient much higher that this 116 feet. But I think that everyone will admit, who has been through this country that is at least the testimony of eve1yone I have heard speak of it - that the railway has been substantially built, that the company have built it in a manner indicating their in tion to work it, and indicating their interest in its economical working after it is built. (cheers) In that respect, at any rate, the people of this country have no reason what ever to complain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Pacific Railway Though bound to the United States by many friendships and by the love I bear my children, I am not one of its citizens. I have never ceased to be a British subject. The military rank I have the honor to have held in the United States was obtained when the State in whose service I won it had been in process of reconstruction. It was obtained, therefore, outside conditions which did not exist at the time within the limits of that State - outside conditions of citizenship. I give this explanation as a simple matter of fact, but certainly not in a sense of apology for my acceptance of a distinction whose obtainment is a subject of pride with better men. M. G., C. B., Minister of Railway and Canals, on the Canadian Pacific Railway: House of Commons, Session 1882 Every respect than was supposed to exist up to Sturgeon iver or the point where the line became common to the interior line, passing away to the head of Lake Superior or to the branch as it was when proposed from that point to the Sault St. Marie. The papers which I have just laid on the Table disclose the fact that an applica tion has been made after examination of the subject by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for permission to locate their line from the point that was common to the Sault Ste. Marie branch, to the north of Lake Superior in the direction of the Sault Ste. Marie; that that which was formerly re garded as a branch to the Sault Ste. Marie, may, to a large extent, become a portion of the trunk line. A careful survey which had been made of the section from Algoma running easterly to connect at the point where the Sault Ste. Marie. Branch commenced, has shown a very favorable section of country for the construction of the road, with the advant age that at Algoma Mills connection is made with naviga tion at the waters of Lake Huron. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Railway Mr. Mackenzie's British Columbia tactics give him the option of explaining whether, when he advertised for tenders for the yale-kamloops line, he meant business, or whether, if it was as he now says, an elec tioneering trick, he was justified in spending $3 for carrying rails from Victoria to Yale. Litera scripta manet. Hansard isfan awkward repository of, words-sometimes. So Mr. Mackenzie found it when he denied his depreciation of the public lands for political ends. He was nailed at once by his own speech, in effect saying that not only had settlers to be given land for nothing, but to be paid for gomg to. The Northwest. His dogging of the English mission of last year, and his patriotic letter to the Manckester Examiner, in which Canadian credit and Canadian energy were alike vilified, got a sharp touching up from Sir Charles. A notable thing was the reply! To the Opposition taunts and gloating over the fall of the English Conservatives. Sir Charles Tupper made it clear that, as far as political. Sympathies can be supposed to stretch across the Atlantic, names had little to do with Canada's prospects, and that the true Liberals were to be found on the right of the Canadian Speaker. Mr. Forster's avowal as to the Mother Country's true policy comes from one who has weight in English Liberal thought. His expressions fall in no way short of Lord Beaconsfield's. It is only too likely for their gratification that the charitable wishes of the Opposition, that the Canadian Government will be embarrassed by the defeat of Lord Beaconsfield, are doomed to disappoint ment. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Startling Facts Relating to the Canadian Pacific Railway and the North-West Lands, Also a Brief Discussion Regarding the Route, the Western Terminus and the Lands Available for Settlement Various indications point to the existence of a wide spread and rapidly growing feeling of dissatisfaction and distrust throughout the older provinces of the Dominion, with regard to the adopted route and construction of that portion of the Canadian Pacific Railway which traverses the "Rocky Mountain" and "Cascade" Zones, and terminates at Burrard Inlet. The main difficulty in the construction of the Pacific Railway is encountered in the "Cascade" or Coast range, through which any line from the interior of the Continent must pass in order to reach the coast. All surveys made hitherto have been met by this grave obstacle. The "Yale," "Bute Inlet," "Kemsquit," and "Skeena" routes are all, owing to this impediment, well nigh impracticable, and the adoption of any one of them could only bo justified, were it to lead to tangible advantages beyond. No such advantages exist, the entire seaboard being but the adamantine buttress of a mountain range, one hundred miles in width. The seaboard again, although pierced by countless Inlets, and presenting on the map a most favourable appearance, offers in reality very grave obstacles to the mariner, because of the nearly universal dearth of good anchorages. On the whole mainland coast there is but one really good natural harbour - Port Simpson. All others have drawbacks in a more or less degree.
