Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Robert Wickliffe: In the Senate of Kentucky, Upon the Preamble and Resolutions in Relation to the Tariff and Internal Improvements; And in Response to Certain Resolutions From South Carolina Mr. Wickliffe said that he had designed not to be in his seat that day, and but for a recent occurrence should be with his family and perhaps not have again taken his seat during the session- that he had from the first determined, if possible, not to be provoked into the discussion of the subject presented by both the resolutions and the amendment; that he had kept bis sent during two days, listening to the most unbridled abuse of a constituent and a friend: but the able and appropriate manner in which these unjust and he might say unfeeling attacks had been repelled by his friend from Nelson, Mr. Hardin, rendered (until that moment) any further notice of the ungenerous course of gentlemen useless. However the remarks of the gentleman, Mr. Campbell, who had just taken his seat, rendered silence on his part, no longer a virtue; and he should consider that he was faithless to his constituents and his country, as well as a traitor to his own feelings, if he did not novy claim the attention of the Senate. He knew that his remarks must be desultory, for neither his health nor time had permitted preparation; but his friends must pardon him; they could not lament more than he did, the consumption of their valuable time, and the friends of the gentlemen who have distinguished themselves in recriminations, he hoped, would, before they passed judgment, hear the defence of the accused; and he must now be excused if he carried the war into the enemies country before he resumed his seat. Although, said Mr. Wickliffe, a personal friend and a constituent has been the unceasing theme of abuse and crimination, although he has been denounced as the modern Pericles, of towering, restless and mad ambition, that scatters dissentions and heart-burnings over an otherwise happy land, and although my friends here and in the other house have come in for their full share of dark insinuations? that we intend to build up the broken fortunes of a fallen and convicted political felon, I have not been more entertained with the sarcastic and amusing repartees of the gentleman from Nelson during the debate, than I have been with the sanctimonious countenances with which these gentlemen tender us their condolence for our fallen condition, and their cautionary harrangues to us against our showing any symptoms of discontent. While whites in the lower South argued that slavery was good for master and slave, many white Kentuckians maintained that because of racial prejudice, public safety, and property rights, slavery was necessary but undeniably evil. Harold D. Tallant shows how this view bespoke a real ambivalence about the desirability of continuing slavery in Kentucky and permitted an active abolitionist movement in the state to exist alongside contented slaveholders. Though many Kentuckians were increasingly willing to defend slavery against northern opposition, they did not always see this defense as their first political priority. Tallant explores the way in which the disparity between Kentuckians' ideals and their actions helped make Kentucky a quintessential border state.

Harlow argues that the ongoing conflict over the meaning of Christian 'orthodoxy' constrained the political and cultural horizons available for defenders and opponents of American slavery. The central locus of these debates was Kentucky, a border slave state with a long-standing antislavery presence. Although white Kentuckians famously cast themselves as moderates in the period and remained with the Union during the Civil War, their religious values showed no moderation on the slavery question. When the war ultimately brought emancipation, white Kentuckians found themselves in lockstep with the rest of the Confederate South. Racist religion thus paved the way for the making of Kentucky's Confederate memory of the war, as well as a deeply entrenched white Democratic Party in the state.

Book excerpt: An Ordered Love is the first detailed study of sex roles in the utopian communities that proposed alternatives to monogamous marriage: The Shakers (1779-1890), the Mormons (1843-90), and the Oneida Community (1848-79). The lives of men and women changed substantially when they joined one of the utopian communities. Louis J. Kern challenges the commonly held belief that Mormon polygamy was uniformly downgrading to women and that Oneida pantagamy and Shaker celibacy were liberating for them. Rather, Kern asserts that changes in sexual behavior and roles for women occurred in ideological environments that assumed women were inferior and needed male guidance. An elemental distrust of women denied the Victorian belief in their moral superiority, attacked the sanctity of the maternal role, and institutionalized the dominance of men over women. These utopias accepted the revolutionary idea that the pleasure bond was the essence of marriage. They provided their members with a highly developed theological and ideological position that helped them cope with the ambiguities and anxieties they felt during a difficult transitional stage in social mores. Analysis of the theological doctrines of these communities indicates how pervasive sexual questions were in the minds of the utopians and how closely they were related to both reform (social perfection) and salvation (individual perfection). These communities saw sex as the point at which the demands of individual selfishness and the social requirements of self-sacrifice were in most open conflict. They did not offer their members sexual license, but rather they established ideals of sexual orderliness and moral stability and sought to provide a refuge from the rampant sexual anxieties of Victorian culture. Kern examines the critical importance of considerations of sexuality and sexual behavior in these communities, recognizing their value as indications of larger social and cultural tensions. Using the insights of history, psychology, and sociology, he investigates the relationships between the individual and society, ideology and behavior, and thought and action as expressed in the sexual life of these three communities. Previously unused manuscript sources on the Oneida Community and Shaker journals and daybooks reveal interesting and sometimes startling information on sexual behavior and attitudes.
