Book A des Aegypti L The Yellow Fever Mosquito

Download or read book A des Aegypti L The Yellow Fever Mosquito written by S. Rickard Christophers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aëdes Aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, is widely used as a laboratory type for research on the bionomics, structure and physiology of the mosquito and for many other research purposes, such as in the testing of insecticides, research on essential food requirements and genetical studies. The book brings together in a systematic way all that is known about this species. It presents, in a readily usable form, information scattered in a vast and diffuse literature and adds much from the author's own work. The scope of the book covers: the history of early research, a review of the species systematics, its distribution, natural enemies and parasites, its relation to disease and the measures taken in its control.

Book Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue

Download or read book Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue written by Zach N. Adelman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue focuses on the knowledge, technology, regulation and ethics of using genetically modified mosquitoes to interrupt the transmission of important vector-borne diseases including Malaria. It contains coverage of the current state of knowledge of vector-borne diseases and how they are currently controlled; vaccine, drug and insecticide development; various strategies for altering the genome of mosquitoes in beneficial ways; and the regulatory, ethical and social environment concerning these strategies. For more than five decades, the prospect of using genetically-modified mosquitoes to control vector-borne disease transmission has been a purely hypothetical scenario. We simply did not have the technology or basic knowledge to be able to do it. With the explosion of field trials and potential interventions in development, Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue provides a comprehensive overview of research in genetics, microbiology, virology, and ecology involved in the development and implementation of genetic modification programs for virus and disease control. This book is meant to provide a practical guide to researchers, regulators and the general public about how this technology actually works, how it can be improved, and what is still unknown. Includes coverage of vectorial capacity, critical to understanding vector-borne disease transmission Provides a summary of the concepts of both population suppression and population replacement Contains pivotal coverage of ethical and ecological ramifications of genetics-based control strategies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a recognized vector for dengue, chikungunya, and Zika arboviruses, and has had a significant dispersion in recent years across the southern hemisphere. It is a known nuisance species in the United States and is believed to have been brought to the new world on ships used for European exploration and colonizationIn recent years, the use of entomopathogenic fungi has proven a promising tool for the biocontrol of Culicides that threaten public health. As such, the authors systematically review studies that evaluated the main entomopathogenic genera used in the biological control of these vectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vector-borne infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and plague, cause a significant fraction of the global infectious disease burden; indeed, nearly half of the world's population is infected with at least one type of vector-borne pathogen (CIESIN, 2007; WHO, 2004a). Vector-borne plant and animal diseases, including several newly recognized pathogens, reduce agricultural productivity and disrupt ecosystems throughout the world. These diseases profoundly restrict socioeconomic status and development in countries with the highest rates of infection, many of which are located in the tropics and subtropics. Although this workshop summary provides an account of the individual presentations, it also reflects an important aspect of the Forum philosophy. The workshop functions as a dialogue among representatives from different sectors and allows them to present their beliefs about which areas may merit further attention. These proceedings summarize only the statements of participants in the workshop and are not intended to be an exhaustive exploration of the subject matter or a representation of consensus evaluation. Vector-Borne Diseases : Understanding the Environmental, Human Health, and Ecological Connections, Workshop Summary (Forum on Microbial Threats) summarizes this workshop.

This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sialic Acids and Sialoglycoconjugates in the Biology of Life, Health and Disease enables the reader to understand the role of sialylation as a post translational modification. The book provides insights on the latest knowledge in the field of sialoglycobiology. Sialic acids as terminal residues of oligosaccharide chains play crucial roles in several cellular recognition events. Synthesized post translationally, they play an important role in recognition, signaling, immunological response and cell-cell interaction. Improper sialylations have been associated with several diseases including cancer. In the post genomics and proteomics era, sialoglybiology has become more and more important in deciphering health and disease conditions. Discusses the sialic acids and their role in different diseases (other than cancer) Provides an understanding of sialylations as post translational modifications (PTM) Demonstrates the impact sialylation has on infectious diseases, the autoimmune system and health Gives insights on the importance of sialic acid biology through animal models
