Book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology written by Tracey Rouault and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on iron-sulfur proteins includes chapters that describe the initial discovery of iron-sulfur proteins in the 1960s to elucidation of the roles of iron sulfur clusters as prosthetic groups of enzymes, such as the citric acid cycle enzyme, aconitase, and numerous other proteins, ranging from nitrogenase to DNA repair proteins. The capacity of iron sulfur clusters to accept and delocalize single electrons is explained by basic chemical principles, which illustrate why iron sulfur proteins are uniquely suitable for electron transport and other activities. Techniques used for detection and stabilization of iron-sulfur clusters, including EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, are discussed because they are important for characterizing unrecognized and elusive iron sulfur proteins. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures. Numerous chapters discuss how microbes, plants, and animals synthesize these complex prosthetic groups, and why it is important to understand the chemistry and biogenesis of iron sulfur proteins. In addition to their vital importance in mitochondrial respiration, numerous iron sulfur proteins are important in maintenance of DNA integrity. Multiple rare human diseases with different clinical presentations are caused by mutations of genes in the iron sulfur cluster biogenesis pathway. Understanding iron sulfur proteins is important for understanding a rapidly expanding group of metabolic pathways important in all kingdoms of life, and for understanding processes ranging from nitrogen fixation to human disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Fe- and Cu-Protein Symposium was held on December 15-18, 1975 at the East West Center-University of Hawaii and was sponsored by the United States-Japan Cooperative Science Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It was recognized by the organizers of the symposium that metalloproteins are very important in the field of health science and a subject worthy of discussion by experts from the United States, Japan and Europe. The meeting was restricted to Fe- and Cu-proteins but this is still a very broad subject matter and therefore, selected topics of current interest in this field were chosen. This book contains the collected papers from most of the symposium participants. The subject matter covered in this book is divided into four parts. These are: 1) the iron-sulfur proteins (which are not a part of the mitochondrial electron transport system); 2) the iron-sulfur proteins and heme proteins of the mitochondrial electron transport system; 3) other heme and nonheme iron proteins; and 5) selected copper proteins. The organizers of the symposium wish to express their gratitude to the participants, the session chairmen, and Drs. I.C. Gunsalus and E. Frieden who assisted in the organization of the symposium.

Book Structure and Metabolic Mechanisms

Download or read book Structure and Metabolic Mechanisms written by Walter Lovenberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron-Sulfur Proteins, Volume III: Structure and Metabolic Mechanisms focuses on numerous advances that have been made in the vital role of iron-sulfur proteins in biological processes. Of the 10 chapters in this book, five chapters present advances in biochemical areas and the other five chapters discuss some of the elegant physical studies made. This book begins with a description of the nitrogenase gene and the molecular mechanism of this complex enzyme. It then centers on the role of iron-sulfur proteins in mammalian mitochondrial function, as well as on the mechanism of biosynthesis and the function of these proteins in formate metabolism. Different approaches that have yielded advances in the understanding of the iron-sulfur clusters are also shown. This book also gives an in-depth discussion on the theoretical aspects of the redox properties of iron-sulfur proteins.

Book Photosynthesis

  • Author : Bacon Ke
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-04-11
  • ISBN : 0306481367
  • Pages : 784 pages

Download or read book Photosynthesis written by Bacon Ke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis: Photobiochemistry and Photobiophysics is the first single-authored book in the Advances in Photosynthesis Series. It provides an overview of the light reactions and electron transfers in both oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. The scope of the book is characterized by the time frame in which the light reactions and the subsequent electron transfers take place, namely between =10sup-12/sup and =10-3 second. The book is divided into five parts: An Overview; Bacterial Photosynthesis; Photosystem II & Oxygen Evolution; Photosystem I; and Proton Transport and Photophosphorylation. In discussing the structure and function of various protein complexes, we begin with an introductory chapter, followed by chapters on light-harvesting complexes, the primary electron donors and the primary electron acceptors, and finally the secondary electron donors. The discussion on electron acceptors is presented in the order of their discovery to convey a sense of history, in parallel with the advancement in instrumentation of increasing time resolution. The book includes a large number of stereo pictures showing the three-dimensional structure of various photosynthetic proteins, which can be easily viewed with unaided eyes. This book is designed to be used as a textbook in a graduate or upper-division undergraduate course in photosynthesis, photobiology, plant physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics; it is equally suitable as a resource book for students, teachers, and researchers in the areas of molecular and cellular biology, integrative biology, microbiology, and plant biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis is a process on which virtually all life on Earth depends. To answer the basic questions at all levels of complexity, from molecules to ecosystems, and to establish correlations and interactions between these levels, photosynthesis research - perhaps more than any other discipline in biology - requires a multidisciplinary approach. Congresses probably provide the only forums where progress throughout the whole field can be overviewed. The Congress proceedings give faithful pictures of recent advances in photosynthesis research and outline trends and perspectives in all areas, ranging from molecular events to aspects of photosynthesis on the global scale. The Proceedings Book, a set of 4 (or 5) volumes, is traditionally highly recognized and intensely quoted in the literature, and is found on the shelves of most senior scientists in the field and in all major libraries.
