Book Mosaics in Roman Britain

Download or read book Mosaics in Roman Britain written by Patricia Witts and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories illustrated in the mosaic pavements that have survived from Roman Britain graphically link us to the world of the Romans in a way that literature, with its nuances of interpretation, cannot. After explaining how and why mosaic pavements were made, Dr. Patricia Witts looks at many of the 200 figured Roman mosaics that can be enjoyed in museums and sites throughout the country. Most portray mythological characters, and the author explains the underlying myths; others are taken from daily life or depict animals, birds, and marine creatures. This lavishly illustrated study is accompanied by a full glossary of technical terms and a gazetteer of relevant sites and museums.

Book Roman Mosaics of Britain South West Britain

Download or read book Roman Mosaics of Britain South West Britain written by David S. Neal and published by Society of Antiquaries of London. This book was released on 2002 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman Mosaics of Britain is the culmination of more than seventy years of combined research and meticulous draughtsmanship by the authors, who are both in the forefront of mosaic scholarship. Their work, to be published in four volumes, is a complete illustrated catalogue of every known Romano-British mosaic - nearly 2000 in all - of which almost 450 feature in Volume II. Presented in the form of a county gazetteer, each mosaic is described, with drawings, photographs of figured elements and references. In many cases, the entry is illustrated by one of the authors' detailed paintings, which are faithful to the colour and composition of each mosaic. This volume contains some of the finest Romano-British mosaics ever uncovered. The South West has Britain's greatest concentration of figured mosaics, including, at Hinton St Mary, one of the earliest depictions of Christ. Several pavements illustrate scenes from Virgil's Aeneid or Ovid's Metamorphosis . As well as the organisation of the craft, the history of mosaic discoveries, building types, room function, figured work and schemes are considered. Each county has its own detailed introduction.

Book Romano British Mosaics

Download or read book Romano British Mosaics written by Peter Johnson and published by Shire Publications. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concise introduction to the floor mosaics of Roman Britain. It first chronicles the history of mosaic discovery in Britain and discusses the changing attitudes towards mosaics, no longer considered merely art objects but social documents. It deals with the different periods of mosaic laying from the first-century pavements at Fishbourne, of Italian craftsmanship, to the Hadrianic and Antonine periods, when mosaic was first established in the towns. It traces the apparent collapse of the craft in the third century and the remarkable fourth-century revival, when many villas were decorated with sophisticated mosaics, and it examines the probable techniques of the Roman mosaicist by reference to both literary and archaeological evidence. A chapter deals with the recording, conservation and research of mosaics, and a list of sites where mosaics can be seen includes comments on items of outstanding interest. Mosaics are illustrated by photographs and distribution maps show the fourth-century schools of mosaic. There is a glossary of technical terms. About the author Peter Johnson has written and presented numerous papers on Roman mosaics, notably at successive International Colloquia on Ancient Mosaics at Ravenna and Trier. He organised the fifth International Colloquium on Ancient Mosaics held at Bath in 1987 and co-edited the papers published in 1994. In 1978 he co-founded ASPROM, the Association for the Study and Preservation of Roman Mosaics, of which he is Vice-Chairman

Book Preservation Or Display

Download or read book Preservation Or Display written by Michael Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the preservation and display of Roman period mosaics in Britain. Historically preservation and display are polarised in a debate I described as the 'contemporary dilemma'. My contention is that this is inadequately grounded in historic precedent, and leads to over simplification of the historic process. Consequently I have written a new history of mosaic preservation and display, establishing fresh encounter between display, preservation and contemporary practice and contextualise the contemporary debate on preservation in situ. The thesis begins with preservation from the conventional perspective of antiquarian attitudes, a paradigm informing all published accounts. Evident that antiquarian, and later archaeological activity validated preservation, it was not the only paradigm by which either preservation or display might be understood. Supported by five case studies discussion in the final chapter considers the importance of sociability, commodification, entertainment, growing tourism and competitive institutional discourse. I have concluded that late 17th and 18th century attempts at mosaic preservation were important to the development of conservation, that eighteenth century experimentation which developed cover buildings, caretakers and the construction of site museums foreshadowed the 1879 Ancient Monuments Act. During the 19th and zo" century though mosaics were marginalised by scholarship, their preservation and display symbolised the rise of archaeology, its expertise, skill and popular appeal. After the Second World War the loss of mosaics became an important symbol of destructive development. In the early 3rd millennium the case studies show display is often outdated becoming enmeshed in the heritage debate rather than exploiting advances in the display discourse. The 'contemporary dilemma' ignores the benefits of display to future analysis, and informed sustainability. The implications of this thesis are that dialogue should lead to a wider appreciation of the value of display; cross disciplinary research should be promoted and interpretational display form part of the assessment of significance in legislation and contemporary attitudes.

Book Roman Mosaics of Britain Western Britain

Download or read book Roman Mosaics of Britain Western Britain written by David S. Neal and published by Society of Antiquaries of London. This book was released on 2002 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings to a triumphant conclusion this monumental project to catalogue, describe and illustrate every Romano-British mosaic. The area covered by the fourth and final volume in the corpus is one of the richest regions of Britain in economic as well as architectural and artistic terms and this is reflected in the quantity and quality of the region's mosaics, which include the largest figured mosaic ever found in Britain - the Woodchester Orpheus pavement - which was perhaps the inspiration for the other famous Orpheus mosaics of the Roman Cotswolds. At the heart of this affluent region is Cirencester, Roman Britain's second largest town, represented here by more than sixty mosaics, the second-century examples being the most exquisite in the country. There are also many fine mosaics from the region's highly ornate villas, as well as from the towns of Gloucester, Caerwent and Wroxeter. The catalogue follows the format of earlier volumes in providing an account of each mosaic's discovery and locating the mosaic within its building plan. Following the description are notable parallels and major references. Many of the illustrations are by the authors, with additional ones by Luigi Thompson, as well as photographs and historical engravings, a high proportion of the latter by Samuel Lysons whose home was in Gloucestershire where he did much of his pioneering work in archaeological excavation and illustration. Brief biographies of Lysons and all the other artists whose work grace all four volumes appear at the end of this volume. As with previous volume the work is preceded with a substantial introduction. This deals with the history and topography of the region, buildings and rooms, an assessment of regional workshops, and schemes, ending with a consideration of mosaics in relation to the end of Roman Britain.

Book Roman mosaics of Britain

Download or read book Roman mosaics of Britain written by David S. Neal and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in this massive project to create the first complete corpus of the Roman mosaics of Britain covers the areas of Britain that were first to come under Roman control and where some of Britain's most impressive mosaics are to be found -- in Colchester, Silchester, London and Verulamium, and in villas and palaces at Brading, Bignor, Fishbourne and Rockbourne. In their introduction to the volume, the authors trace the origins of mosaic-making in Britain, and the development of colour palettes and motifs, from the mainly black-and-white geometric designs of first-century Fishbourne Palace, reflecting contemporary Gaulish fashions, to the more elaborate polychrome designs of the third and fourth centuries, featuring figures from classical mythology, some of which (like Brading's Orpheus taming the animals with his music, or Lullingstone's Bellerophon slaying the Chimera) had been invested with new meaning as symbols of Christianity. They consider too the types of buildings with which mosaics are associated, the functions of mosaic-decorated rooms, the materials from which they are made, the impact of mosaic discoveries on early antiquaries and the pioneering mosaic paintings of artists such as Richard Smirke and Charles Stothard, published in Samuel Lysons' Reliquae Britanniae Romanae (1817).The catalogue follows the format of earlier volumes in providing an account of each mosaic's discovery and locating the mosaic within its building plan. Every mosaic is described, with significant parallels and major references, and illustrated with the authors' own paintings, reproductions of historic engravings and photographs, taken in situ wherever possible, before lifting or restoration. The result is an unrivalled scholarly resource for anyone interested in Roman art, craftsmanship, architecture and social life, which will shortly be complete with the publication of the fourth and final volume on Western Britain, including Wales.
