Book Species Diversity Changes and Habitat Associations of Small Mammals at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge Nye County Nevada

Download or read book Species Diversity Changes and Habitat Associations of Small Mammals at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge Nye County Nevada written by Tara Katherine Raabe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (Ash Meadows NWR), a spring-fed wetlands and alkaline desert system located in the Mojave Desert in Nye County, Nevada, supports 25 species of endemic plants and animals (5 currently listed as federally endangered). Human activities have caused scale habitat alterations to the land and biotic communities of Ash Meadows NWR through peat-mining and spring diversions for irrigation purposes. Restoration projects are currently being developed because of the endangered endemic species. My objectives were to determine changes in small mammal diversity over time and identify habitat types and vegetative characteristics inhabited by small mammals. Information on small mammal specimens collected for two surveys in 1891 and 1933 was used to assess species diversity changes over time. Species diversity in 1891 was similar to the results of my study; however, diversity in 1933 was not similar. Habitats differed in structural components seasonally as well as between capture and non-capture trap sites mostly because of the unique seeps and springs system present. Small mammals were primarily associated with shrub dominated and graminoid dominated habitat associations. Overall, shrub and graminoid dominated habitats are important for small mammal communities; however, other habitat types are equally important in sustaining biodiversity at Ash Meadows NWR.

Book Small Mammals in Disturbed Tallgrass Prairie Landscapes

Download or read book Small Mammals in Disturbed Tallgrass Prairie Landscapes written by Derek Moon and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance is defined as any discrete event that disrupts ecosystem, community, or population structure and changes resources, substrate availability, or the physical environment. Habitat use by an organism is based on its perception of where to maximize its own fitness, and can be altered in response to disturbance-induced changes in resources, substrate, or physical features modified by disturbance. Disturbance-induced changes to vegetation structure reshape a small mammal's surrounding physical environment and/or resources, and may influence its utilization of an area. Effective wildlife and resource management is dependent on a thorough understanding of how individual species and communities utilize their surroundings and how disturbance affects a species' response to changes in its surroundings. We investigated seasonal habitat associations of three small mammal species and for overall species diversity across a gradient of military combat-vehicle disturbance intensities at the Fort Riley Military Reservation, Kansas. Deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) abundance did not vary across a categorical gradient of disturbance created by military-combat vehicles, regardless of season. Western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis) abundance was associated with more highly disturbed areas irrespective of season. Prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) abundance was associated with habitat that was less disturbed in the spring but more highly disturbed in the fall. Shannon diversity of the small mammal community was higher in the more highly disturbed areas regardless of season. This research shows that small mammals respond to disturbances created by military training with combat vehicles in a species-specific manner, and indicates that there may be differences in the effects of military training versus natural or agricultural disturbances on the abundance and diversity of small mammals. This is an important consideration given that the Department of Defense manages more than 12 million ha of land in the United States, and is charged under the Sikes Act with conserving natural resources on these lands, including biological diversity. Thus, the findings of other ecological research on the effects of disturbance on small mammals may not be directly applicable to the types of disturbances that occur on military lands, which underscores the need for further research on the specific effects of military-training activities on species' responses.

Book Small Mammals in Successional Prairie Woodlands of the Northern Great Plains

Download or read book Small Mammals in Successional Prairie Woodlands of the Northern Great Plains written by Mark A. Rumble and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prairie woodlands comprise about 1 percent of the landscape in the northern Great Plains. However, prairie woodlands provide habitat for far more than 1 percent of the wildlife species that occur in the prairie region. With increasing pressures on natural resources, managers need methods for managing wildlife habitat and biodiversity that are based on ecological processes. We studied the small mammals and vegetation in seral stages of four woodland types in central South Dakota. None of the species was restricted to a single seral stage, but abundance of some small mammals varied depending on seral stages of woodland types. To ensure the biodiversity of the prairie, managers should retain all seral stages of all prairie woodlands.

Book Local Distribution of Peromyscus Maniculatus Microtus Montanus Microtus Pennsylvanicus and Sorex Vagrans on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge Washington

Download or read book Local Distribution of Peromyscus Maniculatus Microtus Montanus Microtus Pennsylvanicus and Sorex Vagrans on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge Washington written by William J. Austin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The local distribution of four mammal species was determined for certain sections of the unique ecological area known as Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The four mammal species encountered in the study were the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), the mountain vole (Microtus montanus), the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), and the vagrant shrew (Sorex vagrans). Three habitat types that were judged to be distinctly different were selected for study and are referred to as the mesic Festuca- Symphoricarpos, the xeric Festuca-Symphoricarpos, and the Pinus- Symphoricarpos plant associations. These habitat types were then measured for certain physical characteristics and small mammal densities. Tne physical characteristics measured were soil moisture, herbaceous biomass, total canopy coverage, herbaceous vegetation coverage and grass mat coverage. In addition, the coverage and frequency of most of the plant species present were recorded, Also, the physiognomy of the habitat types was judged and described as various topography types. Six plots of each habitat type were studied. On each of the 18 plots, the relative mammal densities were obtained by way of a three-day removal index. The deer mouse was the most abundant species captured being found in all three habitat types. In addition, this species was highly negatively correlated with all five measured variables, thus indicating an association of this species with dry, sparsely covered areas. The vagrant shrew exhibited just the opposite correlation with the five variables, with a strong positive correlation in evidence. This species favored the mesic Festuca-Symphoricarpos habitat type. Thus, very moist areas with much coverage will be associated with the species' distribution. The ranges of the microtine species overlap at the area of the study. The more numerous mountain vole was found in all three habitat types, but favored the two grassland types. Tne meadow vole, however, was captured only in the mesic Festuca-Symphoricarpos plots, thus indicating a narrower tolerance than that of its congeneric. The mountain vole also failed to show a significant linear correlation with any of the five measured factors indicating further evidence for its reported relatively wider habitat tolerance. The meadow vole displayed significant correlation coefficients for the five variables suggesting this species has a more definite habitat requirement than the mountain vole"--Document.

Book Ecosystems and Human Well being

Download or read book Ecosystems and Human Well being written by Joseph Alcamo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystems and Human Well-Being is the first product of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a four-year international work program designed to meet the needs of decisionmakers for scientific information on the links between ecosystem change and human well-being. The book offers an overview of the project, describing the conceptual framework that is being used, defining its scope, and providing a baseline of understanding that all participants need to move forward. The Millennium Assessment focuses on how humans have altered ecosystems, and how changes in ecosystem services have affected human well-being, how ecosystem changes may affect people in future decades, and what types of responses can be adopted at local, national, or global scales to improve ecosystem management and thereby contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation. The program was launched by United National Secretary-General Kofi Annan in June 2001, and the primary assessment reports will be released by Island Press in 2005. Leading scientists from more than 100 nations are conducting the assessment, which can aid countries, regions, or companies by: providing a clear, scientific picture of the current sta

Book Battle Against Extinction

Download or read book Battle Against Extinction written by W. L. Minckley and published by . This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the Green River was poisoned and its native fishes killed so that the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir could be stocked with non-native game fishes for sportsmen. This incident was representative of water management in the West, where dams and other projects have been built to serve human needs without consideration for the effects of water diversion or depletion on the ecosystem. Indeed, it took a Supreme Court decision in 1976 to save Devils Hole pupfish from habitat destruction at the hands of developers. Nearly a third of the native fish fauna of North America lives in the arid West; this book traces their decline toward extinction as a result of human interference and the threat to their genetic diversity posed by decreases in their populations. What can be done to slow or end this tragedy? As the most comprehensive treatment ever attempted on the subject, Battle Against Extinction shows how conservation efforts have been or can be used to reverse these trends. In covering fishes in arid lands west of the Mississippi Valley, the contributors provide a species-by-species appraisal of their status and potential for recovery, bringing together in one volume nearly all of the scattered literature on western fishes to produce a monumental work in conservation biology. They also ponder ethical considerations related to the issue, ask why conservation efforts have not proceeded at a proper pace, and suggest how native fish protection relates to other aspects of biodiversity planetwide. Their insights will allow scientific and public agencies to evaluate future management of these animal populations and will offer additional guidance for those active in water rights and conservation biology. First published in 1991, Battle Against Extinction is now back in print and available as an open-access e-book thanks to the Desert Fishes Council.
