Book Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 Among the questions which have stood most prominent before the minds of men deeply interested in religious matters during the latter part of the nineteenth century are to be reckoned those which appertain to a Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament. Such problems as refer to the Authorship, Purpose, Date, Literary Structure, Historical Value, etc., of each book contained in the first part of the Bible have appealed powerfully to Biblical students, and hardly less so to the attentive readers of the numerous books or periodicals wherein they are oftentimes discussed, oftener still alluded to. It was only natural, therefore, that after the questions which are common to the writings of both the Old and the New Testament had been treated in a "General Introduction to the Holy Scriptures," those which concern especially the books of the Old Testament should be next studied in a "Special Introduction" to that first part of the Sacred Volume. While, however, the work was being prepared for the press, the conviction was gradually forced upon the writer that, to give to each question the developments it naturally demanded, more than one volume would be necessary for the study of all the books of the Old Testament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 Bleek's Introduction to the Old Testament which is here for the first time presented in an English dress, has been long and favourably known to Biblical students as, perhaps, the most complete and trustworthy of the works which, under the same title, and professing the same oh jects, have appeared with such rapidity in Germany during the last quarter of a century. Many as these so-called Introductions are, and various their degrees of excel lence, this of Bleek's deserves to be specially commended for the union of the qualities most essential to the character of such a work: thorough acquaintance with every depart ment of the subject, breadth of view, honesty and fairness of treatment, quickness of perception of the main points at issue, calmness of judgment, and, above all, deep reverence for Holy Scripture as the Revelation of the Mind and Will of God. Book A Manual of Bible History Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Bible History Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bible History, Vol. 1 That a Bible History for Catholic students should be brought out by one of our laity is a hopeful and encouraging sign. Would that a lively interest in all Biblical studies, and indeed in all branches of Christian learning, were not, as some seem to think it may be and should be, confined so closely to the ranks of the clergy! Nowadays the Church, the custodian of Revelation, needs champions drawn from all classes of her sons; and she is right in expecting that amongst the foremost of her defenders should be found some, at least, of those who, though not sharing in the priestly character, yet exercise in her name the sacred office of teaching. Of all who exercise that office she has a right to exact something more than a mere skin-deep acquaintance with that which they teach. Such an acquaintance naught can beget in them but a genuine love of their subject, and the more exalted and sublime the subject, the more ardent ought that love to be. That our teachers are, as a body, thoroughly in love with their subject we have had wide and abundant proof, and the publication of this Manual will be one more welcome evidence of the fact. Particularly is it encouraging to see it brought out at the present moment, when the hands of the invader seem to threaten the existence of our schools, and one is perforce reminded of the sturdy Roman who paid costprice for a field outside the city gates at the moment when Hannibal was encamped upon it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament My Father acquired a knowledge of the German language during his travels in the country in 1815-16. He translated some of the minor poems of Schiller in 1823. Later, his attention was directed to German Theology, and finding there was no English version of Eichorn's 'Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament, ' he set to work to make one. For this purpose he studied Hebrew and Arabic; with Greek he was well acquainted. But he gave up the task when he had translated a portion of the work, and he took no steps for printing even this. Now, in his ninety-eighth year, he has asked me to have the fragment printed. The translation was made from an early edition of Eichorn's works. From my ignorance of the languages of antiquity, it is not within my competence to do more than to correct the proofs of the translation. I regret that circumstances prevent my calling in further help than has been kindly afforded by the printer. No other volume, not even Shakespeare, has called forth so large a body of literature. But of all that has been written there are very few books that have been prepared with pedagogical insight to meet the wants of young students. It is in view of this need that the present work - not fruitlessly, the author hopes - has been prepared. The purpose of this book is to set forth the literary, historical, and ethical value of the Bible. It aims to pre sent the principal facts that every intelligent person ought to know. It directs the students' attention chiefly to the Bible itself; and as a literary, historical, and ethical study, the Scriptures will be found, in the case of many readers, to be a book of unsuspected interest and value. Book Old Testament Introduction

Download or read book Old Testament Introduction written by John Howard Raven and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Introduction: General and Special An apology is due to those who read theological books for adding another to the already long list of volumes on the Higher Criticism. The apology is that the great majority of works on this subject are from the negative standpoint, while most of the others are too brief to be of much value, and substitute ridicule for argument. The orthodox theologian weakens his position by undervaluing the force of the radical arguments. He does not commend himself to fair-minded people by ignoring or ridiculing his opponents. The traditional view of the Old Testament has nothing to fear except from the ignorance and the prejudice of its adherents. The present volume has arisen primarily from the need of a conservative text-book which covers the whole range of the subject. The writer has endeavored to avoid on the one hand that over-conciseness which leaves the student in the dark and on the other that over-fullness which leaves him in a fog. As far as possible the arguments of the liberals are given in their own words, not only to conserve fairness but to encourage the student to read the opposite side of the case. This is the cause of the large number of quotations. The lists of words, parallel passages, and other details which are necessary for the argument in certain parts are intended for reference. It is hoped that they will open the way for individual research. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by John Walter Beardslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scriptures Hebrew and Christian, Vol. 1: Arranged and Edited as an Introduction to the Study of the Bible; Hebrew Story From Creation to the Exile At the head of each chapter have been placed, for pur poses of reference, the Bible chapters from which that chapter has been composed. It is also our intention to place at the end of the second volume an index of all chapters of the Old Testament used in this work. The chronology of the Old Testament is at present under discussion. We have not, therefore, considered it ad visable to adopt any system, but have appended to this preface a brief list of dates which seem to have been securely established. We have also added a partial list of weights and measures. In Part I. Of this volume, which contains the traditions and history of the Israelites from the Creation to the reign of Saul, some will, perhaps, expect to find the great bulk of the legal portions of the Pentateuch. According to our original plan the Law should have formed a fifth part in the present volume, but space does not permit. It will be found treated separately in the second volume, under the title Hebrew Laws and Customs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
