Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly illustrated guide to the unconventional vehicles that help special forces succeed in asymmetrical warfare, from the author of The Centurion Tank. What is the ideal vehicle for special forces operations, for dangerous missions performed by small units of highly trained troops often working in enemy territory, behind enemy lines? And which vehicles have the world’s armies selected, adapted and developed since modern special forces established themselves as a key arm of the military during the Second World War? Pat Ware, in this authoritative and highly illustrated book, uses all his expert knowledge of the history of military vehicles to show the fascinating variety of machinery that has been used, from converted Jeeps and Land Rovers to a bizarre collection of even more remarkable, sometimes purpose-built strike vehicles—the Scorpion, Cobra and Supacat Jackal, the LRDG Chevrolet, the Mechem, the Pinzgauer and the Warrior among them. As well as describing the anatomy of the typical special forces vehicle, with particular reference to the iconic SAS Jeeps and the Land Rover “Pink Panther,” he illustrates all of the known special forces vehicles, giving technical data, including information on power units and transmission, type of weapons, auxiliary equipment, armored protection, speed and mobility, and weight. He also explains the nature of special forces and describes their historic origins, with emphasis on units such as the LRDG, the SAS and Popski’s Private Army during the Second World War, and he looks at modern special forces and their role.

Book excerpt: Over the last 30 years, the 'technical' or armed pick-up truck has become arguably the most ubiquitous military land vehicle of modern warfare. Harking back to the armed Jeeps and Chevrolet trucks of the SAS and Long Range Desert Group in North Africa in World War II, the world's first insurgent technicals were those of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army in Algeria in the late 1970s, followed by the Chadian use of technical in the so-called Toyota War against Libya. Since then, technicals have seen use in Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, as well as being used by Western and Russian Special Forces. Fully illustrated with commissioned artwork and providing rigorous analysis, this is the first history of how this deceptively simple fighting vehicle has been used and developed in conflicts worldwide.

Book Combat Vehicles of Russia s Special Forces

Download or read book Combat Vehicles of Russia s Special Forces written by Mark Galeotti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated study of both the combat vehicles of Russia's legendary Spetsnaz special forces and the whole range of unique and modified vehicles that Russia's elite units use, from combat snowmobiles to the world's biggest water-cannon. Elite forces need elite vehicles. As Vladimir Putin has devoted effort and funds into modernising Russia's armed forces and turning them into an instrument geared not just for defending the Motherland but also projecting power beyond its borders, Russia has seen a growing emphasis on special and specialist forces. Traditionally, the elite Spetsnaz commandos had to make do with regular vehicles or civilian-based 'technicals', not least to conceal their presence (or, indeed, very existence). Now, increasingly at the forefront of Russian power projection, the Spetsnaz are acquiring more capable, versatile vehicles, such as the paratroopers' BTR-D personnel carrier, and also experimenting with exotic, specialist new acquisitions, such as the Chaborz M-3 buggy and Yamaha Grizzly all-terrain vehicle. The other elite branches of Russia's forces, such as the Arctic-warfare troops of the 200th Independent Motor Rifle Brigade, the paratroopers of the Air Assault Troops (VDV), the Naval Infantry, and the elite units of the security forces are also developing and fielding new vehicles for their specialist roles, from combat snowmobiles to urban-warfare vehicles. From highly-mobile LMVs able to operate in the deserts of Syria or the streets of Ukraine, through dedicated fire-support vehicles such as the air-droppable Sprut-SD or the massive BMPT 'Terminator', to amphibious tanks and drone-equipped security trucks, these are the workhorses of Russia's special forces. This study explores all these combat vehicles in detail, combining expert analysis from Russia expert Mark Galeotti with highly accurate full-colour illustrations and photographs.

Book American Wheeled Armoured Fighting Vehicles

Download or read book American Wheeled Armoured Fighting Vehicles written by Michael Green and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous wheeled armoured fighting vehicles have seen service in the US armed forces on and off for over 80 years. There have been various changes of policy and twice, after the Second World War and Vietnam, they went out of favour but their use is now well established. This well researched and superbly illustrated book describes all the different types and variants since the first M1 was ordered in 1931. The M8 armoured car was widely used during World War Two but it was not until Vietnam that further wheeled AFVs came into service, notably the M706 armoured car. After a lull the US Marine Corps adopted the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) in 1983. The US Army first used armoured Humvees in 1994 and variants remain in service (M1141 and M1116). Other types today include the Guardian (M1117) and the Army version of the LAV names the ‘Stryker’. To meet the operational requirements of Iraq and Afghanistan the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) was ordered in bulk from 2007.

Book ATP 3 18 14 Special Forces Vehicle Mounted Operations Tactics Techniques and Procedures

Download or read book ATP 3 18 14 Special Forces Vehicle Mounted Operations Tactics Techniques and Procedures written by Headquarters Department of the Army and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the mid-1980s, the US Army lacked a dedicated mounted special operations capability. Recognizing that traditionally dismounted Special Forces operations in desert environments were unrealistic, the 1st Special Operations Command and the 5th Special Forces Group (SFG) authorized the formation of two elements in 1984 in order to develop mounted doctrine and operational techniques. Elements of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th SFG, moved to Fort Bliss, Texas, and, in the autumn of 1986, began to fulfil this mission.Early detachments were equipped with M880 trucks and M151 jeeps. Later, they appraised, evaluated, and accepted the high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) as the interim desert mobility vehicle. In October 1987, A 1/5th SFG produced a summary of the lessons learned between 1985 and 1987. The initial intent of the compendium was to provide a reference for the training and employment of mounted SF detachments within 5th SFG. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and lessons learned from both 3rd SFG and 5th SFG were incorporated, and procedures for new or improved equipment were added. Although many of the tactical principles remained essentially unchanged, revisions were necessary to account for equipment updates, such as the new ground mobility vehicle (GMV) and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. This ATP encompasses the tactics, techniques, procedures, and lessons learned by personnel at Fort Bliss, Fort Campbell, Fort Bragg, and overseas, as well as data extracted from Operations DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, RESTORE HOPE, PROVIDE DEMOCRACY, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM.This ATP is designed primarily to serve as a reference for the training and employment of mounted SF detachments operating in desert terrain during long-term, unassisted operations; however, the information in this ATP may also be applied to any SF long-range vehicular operation. As with all doctrinal manuals, ATP 3-18.14 is authoritative but not directive. It serves as a guide and does not preclude SF units from developing their own SOPs to meet their needs.
