Kennedy Warfare Warfare Center and School (USAJFKSWCS) requested help from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Psychological Application Directorate (PAD) and the U.S. Army Research Institute (ARI) in identifying prescreening tools that could be used to identify which soldiers have the greatest chance for success in the Special Forces (SF) selection and tralning pipeline. Book Special Forces Assessment and Selection

Download or read book Special Forces Assessment and Selection written by Sean P. Feeley and published by . This book was released on 1998-12-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) program conducted by the U.S. Army's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS). It seeks to determine the most accurate and relevant method of testing potential Special Forces soldiers and officers. Thesis study focuses on the validity of the current personal attributes required in a Special Forces soldier and the current testing methods employed to measure the required attributes set forth by SWCS. It also explores the issue of an additional selection program for the potential Special Forces officer. This study demonstrates that the current attributes required in the potential Special Forces soldier and officer are valid. However it recommends two additional attributes that will enhance the profile of the Special Forces soldier. It also demonstrates that the current testing methods of SFAS do not sufficiently test all the required attributes. This thesis recommends nine additional testing methods that adequately test all the required attributes for a Special Forces soldier and officer. This thesis focus on the assessment and selection program of SFAS; it does not discuss standards that must be achieved by the potential Special Forces soldier and officer.

Book excerpt: An unprecedented view of Green Beret training, drawn from the year Dick Couch spent at Special Forces training facilities with the Army’s most elite soldiers. In combating terror, America can no longer depend on its conventional military superiority and the use of sophisticated technology. More than ever, we need men like those of the Army Special Forces–the legendary Green Berets. Following the experiences of one class of soldiers as they endure this physically and mentally exhausting ordeal, Couch spells out in fascinating detail the demanding selection process and grueling field exercises, the high-level technical training and intensive language courses, and the simulated battle problems that test everything from how well SF candidates gather operational intelligence to their skills at negotiating with volatile, often hostile, local leaders. Chosen Soldier paints a vivid portrait of an elite group, and a process that forges America’s smartest, most versatile, and most valuable fighting force.

Book Special Forces Assessment and Selection Program Development for Force XXI

Download or read book Special Forces Assessment and Selection Program Development for Force XXI written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has evaluated the current Special Forces Assessment and Selection program by analyzing the functions of recruiting, assessing, and selecting soldiers for Special Forces Qualification training. Critical attributes and psychological screening tools that are used during assessment and selection were reviewed for validity. In addition, a review of the program design was necessary to determine whether or not Special Forces are selecting promising candidates for service in the future. Several observations were identified during the course of this research. For example, the critical attributes utilized for assessment are derived from the Army core values. Special Forces want soldiers who embody the Army value system and live the Army ethic. Also, a re-engineering of the Special Forces Assessment and Selection board and evaluation process is necessary to grow the quality needed for Force XXI.

Book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field

Download or read book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.
