Book Speaking Private Authority

Download or read book Speaking Private Authority written by Roberto J. Flores and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking Private Authority: The Construction of Sustainability in Forests and Fisheries expands upon current understandings of the emergent global phenomenon that is private authority. As private authority is becoming increasingly important in the conduct of global governance, broadening our collective understanding of it will prove beneficial. Roberto J. Flores argues that private actors are not simply outgrowths of existent social structures or material conditions, rather they are purposive agents strategically pursuing an agenda. Therefore, explaining private authority requires an examination of the constitutive elements that underlie this social phenomenon––to which the author applies an analytical framework that combines social network theory with discourse analysis. The author applies these tools to two cases taken from the environmental sector––forests and fisheries—and finds that as environmental politics takes on an increasingly networked character the actors that are best able to generate and wield private authority are those that strategically place themselves in-between networks through the construction of discursive nodal points around which competing actors are forced to converge—at the level of identity. The case studies specifically look at how particular actors leveraged construction of the sustainable development concept in order to strategically place themselves in advantageous positions for exercising private authority.

Book The Authority Gap Why Women Are Still Taken Less Seriously Than Men and What We Can Do About It

Download or read book The Authority Gap Why Women Are Still Taken Less Seriously Than Men and What We Can Do About It written by Mary Ann Sieghart and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive, intersectional look at the mother of all gender biases: a resistance to women’s authority and power. Every woman has a story of being underestimated, ignored, challenged, or patronized in the workplace. Maybe she tried to speak up in a meeting, only to be talked over by male colleagues. Or a client addressed her male subordinate instead of her. These stories remain true even for women at the top of their fields; in the U.S. Supreme Court, for example, female justices are interrupted four times more often than their male colleagues—and 96 percent of the time by men. Despite the progress we’ve made toward equality, we still fail, more often than we might realize, to take women as seriously as men. In The Authority Gap, journalist Mary Ann Sieghart provides a startling perspective on the gender bias at work in our everyday lives and reflected in the world around us, whether in pop culture, media, school classrooms, or politics. With precision and insight, Sieghart marshals a wealth of data from a variety of disciplines—including psychology, sociology, political science, and business—and talks to pioneering women like Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo, renowned classicist Mary Beard, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, and Hillary Clinton. She speaks with women from a range of backgrounds to explore how gender bias intersects with race and class biases. Eye-opening and galvanizing, The Authority Gap teaches us how we as individuals, partners, parents, and coworkers can together work to narrow the gap. Sieghart exposes unconscious bias in this fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all: men as well as women.

Book excerpt: Is God Back? Reconsidering the New Visibility of Religion examines the shifting boundary between religion and the public sphere in Europe and the Middle East. Asking what the 'new visibility of religion' means and challenging simplistic notions of living in a 'post-secular' age, the chapters explore how religion is contested and renegotiated in the public sphere – or rather, in different publics – and the effects of these struggles on society, state and religion itself. Whereas religion arguably never went away in the USA, the re-emergence of public religion is a European phenomenon. Is God Back? provides timely case studies from Europe, as well as extending to the Middle East, where fledgling democracies are struggling to create models of governance that stem from the European secular model, but which need to be able to accommodate a much more public form of religiosity. Discussions include the new visibility of neo-Pagan and Native Faith groups in Europe, Evangelical Christians and Church teaching on sexuality in the UK, and Islamic social Movements in the Arab world. Drawing from empirical and theoretical research on religion and national identity, religion and media, church-state relationships, and religion and welfare, Is God Back? is a rich source for students and scholars interested in the changing face of public religion in the modern world, including those studying the sociology of religion, social policy, and theology.
