Book Spatially Resolved Sub Doppler Overtone Gain Measurements in a Small Scale Supersonic HF Laser

Download or read book Spatially Resolved Sub Doppler Overtone Gain Measurements in a Small Scale Supersonic HF Laser written by Charles Frank Wisniewski and published by . This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overtone gain of a small-scale HF laser was measured using a sub- Doppler tunable diode laser system. Two-dimension spatially resolved small signal gain and temperature maps were generated, which show a highly inhomogeneous gain medium: indicating the dominant role that mixing of the fuel and oxidizer streams has in HF laser performance. The measured gain a temperature data were analyzed with the aid of a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code. To reduce uncertainty of important modeling input parameters, novel measurements of reactant concentration, flow velocity and gain length were made. Results show that reactant mixing mechanisms such as turbulence and large-scale vortex structures have a large effect on the gain averaged over a vertical profile while kinetic rate mechanisms such as reaction rate constants and reactant concentration have a greater effect on the maximum system gain. Overtone gain data measured while operating the laser saturated on the fundamental transitions are compared with fundamental lasing output spectra. In all cases, the data are consistent with an equilibrium rotational distribution.

Book Spatially Resolved Temperature Diagnostic for Supersonic Flow Using Cross Beam Doppler Limited Laser Saturation Spectroscopy

Download or read book Spatially Resolved Temperature Diagnostic for Supersonic Flow Using Cross Beam Doppler Limited Laser Saturation Spectroscopy written by Grady T. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical techniques for measuring the temperature in three-dimensional supersonic reactive flows have typically depended on lineshape measurements using single-beam laser absorption spectroscopy. However, absorption over extended path lengths in flows with symmetric, turbulent eddies can lead to systematically high extracted temperatures due to Doppler shifts resulting from flow along the absorption path. To eliminate these problems, Cross-Beam Saturation Absorption Spectroscopy (CBSAS) and Cross-Beam Inter-Modulated Fluorescence (CBIMF) have been developed which utilize two crossed and nearly copropogating laser beams.to record the spectral signal of an I2 ro-vibrational line in a small three-dimensional volume using a tunable CW dye laser. Temperature is extracted by fitting the recorded signal with a theoretical signal constructed from the Doppler-broadened hyperfine components of the ro-vibrational line. The CBIMF technique proved successful for extracting the temperature of an I2-seeded, Ar gas flow within a small, Mach 2, Laval nozzle where the overlap volume of the two 1 mm diameter laser beams was 2.4 mm3. At a test point downstream of the nozzle throat, the average temperature of 146 K +/- 1.5 K extracted from measurements of the I2 P(46) 17-1 spectral line compared favorably with the 138 K temperature calculated from isentropic, one-dimensional flow theory.

Book Spatially Resolved Temperature Determination in I2 Gas Using Doppler Limited Saturation Spectroscopy

Download or read book Spatially Resolved Temperature Determination in I2 Gas Using Doppler Limited Saturation Spectroscopy written by James W. Myers Jr and published by . This book was released on 2000-03 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saturation spectroscopy techniques were used to demonstrate the ability to make spatially resolved temperature measurements by exploiting the B3 Pil(O+(sub u)) - X1 Sigma(O+ (sub g)) electronic transition in molecular iodine (12). Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy measurements resulted in hyperfine spectral profiles for the P(7O) 17-1 and P(53) 19-2 ro-vibrational transitions between the electronic levels. Doppler-limited saturation spectroscopy, an adaptation of the Doppler-free technique in which beams propagate in the same direction and cross within the gas sample, allowed for the measurement of spatially resolved Doppler profiles for the same transitions. The profiles were measured at several spatial positions in 12 cells with measured temperature gradients. The technique did not produce accurate temperature readings; however, the saturation spectroscopy variant did produce profiles that were spatially resolved, with an interaction volume of approximately 12 x 1 x 1 (mm units). This thesis was motivated by the Air Force's Airborne Laser Laboratory (ABL), which has a need to discriminate a spatially distributed temperature distribution. The Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL), which is the high power directed energy source for ABL, has a low concentration of 12 as a reaction byproduct. Line-integrated optical temperature measurements inside the COIL reaction chamber have been higher than predicted, which can have a dramatic effect on the threshold condition for the laser. Spatially resolved temperature measurements would provide a diagnostic tool to identify hot spots and heat gradients in the supersonic flow region of the laser.

Book Gas Lasers

Download or read book Gas Lasers written by Masamori Endo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers with a gaseous active medium offer high flexibility, wide tunability, and advantages in cost, beam quality, and power scalability. Gas lasers have tended to become overshadowed by the recent popularity and proliferation of semiconductor lasers. As a result of this shift in focus, details on modern developments in gas lasers are difficult to find. In addition, different types of gas lasers have unique properties that are not well-described in other references. Collecting expert contributions from authorities dealing with specific types of lasers, Gas Lasers examines the fundamentals, current research, and applications of this important class of laser. It is important to understand all types of lasers, from solid-state to gaseous, before making a decision for any application. This book fills in the gaps by discussing the definition and properties of gaseous media along with its fluid dynamics, electric excitation circuits, and optical resonators. From this foundation, the discussion launches into the basic physics, characteristics, applications, and current research efforts for specific types of gas lasers: CO lasers, CO2 lasers, HF/DF lasers, excimer lasers, iodine lasers, and metal vapor lasers. The final chapter discusses miscellaneous lasers not covered in the previous chapters. Collecting hard-to-find material into a single, convenient source, Gas Lasers offers an encyclopedic survey that helps you approach new applications with a more complete inventory of laser options.

  • Author : Orazio Svelto
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1489927484
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Principles of Lasers written by Orazio Svelto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of more than ten years of research and teaching in the field of quantum electronics. The purpose of the book is to introduce the principles of lasers, starting from elementary notions of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. Because it is an introductory book, an effort has been made to make it self contained to minimize the need for reference to other works. For the same reason; the references have been limited (whenever possible) either to review papers or to papers of seminal importance. The organization of the book is based on the fact that a laser can be thought of as consisting of three elements: (i) an active material, (ii) a pumping system, and (iii) a suitable resonator. Ac cordingly, after an introductory chapter, the next three chapters deal, respectively, with the interaction of radiation with matter, pumping processes, and the theory of passive optical resonators.

Book Methods of Laser Spectroscopy

Download or read book Methods of Laser Spectroscopy written by Yehiam Prior and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fritz Haber Symposium on Methods of Laser Spectroscopy was held in Ein Bokek, Israel, on the shores of the Dead Sea, on December 16-20, 1985. The location is the lowest place on earth, 392 meters below sea level. It was hoped that 120 active laser scientists, so lowly trapped in such a place, with the nearest entertainment 100 km away, will have no choice but to discuss laser spectroscopy. On the average, the Dead Sea area receives 3-4 days of rain each year, and this year these days all occurred during the conference. This did not mean the cancellation of the hikes, although the trip to Massada was conducted in the rain. The unexpected rains also caused flash floods in the area, and Ein Bokek was completely cut-off on Thursday night. The archeologist scheduled to speak after dinner, and the belly dancer scheduled to appear afterwards, (~ould not arrive, resulting in the only serious deviation from the original plan. The scientific program consisted of invited talks and contributed posters. The emphasis in selection of invited speakers and topics was on the methods rather than specific molecular systems, and an attempt was made to allow ample time for discussion after each lecture. The same philosophy guided us in editing this book, and authors were requested to write manuscripts longer than usual for standard conference proceedings.

Book The Social Construction of Technological Systems

Download or read book The Social Construction of Technological Systems written by Wiebe E. Bijker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The impact of technology on society is clear and unmistakeable. The influence of society on technology is more subtle. The 13 essays in this book have been written by a diverse group of scholars united by a common interest in creating a new field - the sociology of technology. They draw on a wide array of case studies - from cooking stoves to missile systems, from 15th-century Portugal to today's Al labs - to outline an original research program based on a synthesis of ideas from the social studies of science and the history of technology. Together they affirm the need for a study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions"--Back cover.
