Book excerpt: Large woody debris (LWD) patterns were investigated in 18 streams in the Interior of British Columbia for a variety of stream sizes (1.4-13.7 m bankfull width flow) and forest types (SBS and SBPS BEC Zones). Definition and scaling type for LWD are variable in the published literature. This research reported that both the definition used to define LWD and the scaling technique used to analyze and display LWD affected the results in LWD abundance and volume measures. Although LWD varies by forest type and stream size, the effect of the riparian forest on LWD loading was minimal compared to the effect of stream size for the 18 study sites. Stream characteristics were such as bankfull flow width and depth were identified as predictor variables for LWD abundance and volume. The distribution of LWD was different in wood associated with LWD jams than wood free in the stream. The importance of LWD jams increased relatively with stream size. LWD jams (1) were larger, (2) had an increasingly different distribution of LWD size classes, and (3) had a different distribution of position and orientation classes than free wood with increases in stream size. The patterns observed in the distribution of LWD for orientation and position classes as well as piece size was consistent with the literature: (1) perpendicular wood generally decreased while parallel increased with stream size; (2) bridged wood decreased while wood fully in the bed increased and (3) piece size generally increased with stream size.

Through this meeting, the Compendium of Forest Hydrology and Geomorphology was born. As a synthesis document, the Compendium consolidates current scientific knowledge and operational experience into 19 chapters. To ensure reliable, relevant, and scientifically sound information, all chapters were extensively peer reviewed employing the standard double-blind protocol common to most scholarly journals. Chapters in the Compendium summarize the basic scientific information necessary to manage water resources in forested environments, explaining watershed processes and the effects of disturbances across different regions of the province. In short, the Compendium is about British Columbia and is primarily intended for a British Columbian audience, giving it a uniquely regional focus compared to other hydrology texts. At over 800 pages, the Compendium showcases the rich history of forest hydrology, geomorphology, and aquatic ecology research and practice in British Columbia and sets forth the foundation for the future by showing us how much more we have yet to learn.

Book excerpt: The Canadian government announced the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative (MPBI) in 2002 to address the socio-economic and ecological consequences of an epidemic of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins). The objective of this study was to establish baseline information on the ecological characteristics that occur at different stages of succession, resulting from mountain pine beetle disturbance at different time intervals. Key issues addressed by this study were: the post-beetle ecological character of stands; the ecological legacies that should be sought post-beetle; maintenance of ecological integrity in beetle-damaged landscapes; and the impacts of beetles on regeneration. This paper presents a study of stand conditions following two historic mountain pine beetle outbreaks events in the 1940s and 1980s. The study quantified structural and species composition of stands at different stages of succession (25 years and 65 years), and quantified the differences that occur in forest development between stands with and without disturbance by the beetle. It concludes with several recommendations for management of post-disturbance landscapes.
