Book Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover In and Around Magamba Nature Reserve

Download or read book Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover In and Around Magamba Nature Reserve written by Solomon Sembosi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Regional Geography, , course: Ecosystems Science and Management, language: English, abstract: This study assesses land use and land cover changes and the causes of such changes in and around Magamba Nature Reserve. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to quantify and analyze the trend in land use and land cover changes over the past 20 years whereby satellite images of 1995, 2008 and 2015 were used. Moreover, household surveys, direct field observations and focus group discussions were employed to obtain socioeconomic factors that influence changes in land use and land cover. Population Census data of 2002 and 2012 were utilized to identify population density for the villages surrounding the reserve. The results indicated a major expansion of agriculture from 169.33 ha in 1995, 282.16 ha in 2008 to 902.54 ha in 2015. There was an increase of built-up areas from 36.50 ha in 1995, 911.56 ha in 2008 to 1792.92 ha in 2015 at the expense of other land covers. The identified influences for such changes include population pressure, unemployment, landless, agricultural expansion, fire and need for energy sources (e.g. firewood and charcoal). Recent increase in population and anthropogenic activities is a threat to conservation and thus should be discouraged in order to restore the degraded areas and for the sustainability of the biodiversity in and around Magamba Nature Reserve. Magamba Nature Reserve in Lushoto District Tanzania has experienced and continues to experience major land use changes and land cover loss in natural vegetation. This has resulted in biodiversity loss, local climate change, soil erosion and forest degradation. Therefore, understanding of changes occurring in such ecosystem is of vital importance for establishing management activities. It has been lately indicated that these problems are mainly due to anthropogenic activities as this district is among the rural areas with high population growth compared to other rural districts in Tanzania. However, these insights are little proved quantitatively.

Book Land use Dynamics and Land Degradation in Iramba District Central Tanzania

Download or read book Land use Dynamics and Land Degradation in Iramba District Central Tanzania written by R. Y. M. Kangalawe and published by OSSREA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates land-use dynamics, agricultural development and constraints, land degradation, and the socio-economic and environmental effects of agricultural processes in central Tanzania. It shows there have been both spatial and temporal changes in land-use patterns in the area. The intensity of agriculture has increased; however environmental concerns are arising, including deforestation and soil erosion. The study concludes that to sustain the livelihoods of the people in the area whilst at the same time maintaining the existing dynamics, there is a need for an integrated approach to managing the available and varied resources, as well as measures to ensure environmentally sound agricultural practices.

This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, Haramaya University, language: English, abstract: Land-use/land-cover change is a major issue of global environmental change. This study was aimed to investigate LULCC, driving forces, and their implications on climate variability in the case of Kereba Sub-Catchment of Awash Basin, Eastern Ethiopia from 1999 to 2019. Satellite image data were downloaded from the USGS websites. Gridded temperature and rainfall data were obtained from the NMSA of Ethiopia. Also, FGD, KII, and field observation were used to address drivers of LULCC. Google Earth and Global Positioning System were employed for ground verification. The maximum likelihood supervised classification method was used to classify LU/LC types, NDVI and LST using ERDAS imagine 2015 and ArcGIS 10.3 software. Coefficient of Variation, Precipitation Concentration Index, and the moving average was used to analyze temperature and rainfall data. Regression analysis/Correlation coefficient was used to signify the association of LULCC and NDVI with climate variables. Landsat image of the study area was classified into agricultural land, forest land, grazing land, settlement, and shrub land.

Book Implication of Human Activities on Land Use Land Cover Dynamics in Kagera Catchment East Africa

Download or read book Implication of Human Activities on Land Use Land Cover Dynamics in Kagera Catchment East Africa written by Robel Ogbaghebriel Berakhi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kagera basin in East Africa has experienced major land surface loss in tropical forests, woodlands, and savannas due to the conversion of land for agricultural purposes. This has resulted in soil degradation, siltation, eutrophication, desertification, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Damages in the Kagera have also led to pollution and sedimentation in Victoria Lake which receives water from the basin. These environmental changes have an effect on people in this region who largely depend on the natural resources. It has been indicated that these problems are mainly due to population growth as this region has the highest population growth and density when compared to sub-Saharan countries. However, previous studies conducted in this region have not investigated the spatial relationship between population growth and LULC changes. The aim of this study was to quantify LULC changes that occurred from 1984 to 2011, and predict future scenarios. Another goal of this study was to investigate the spatial relationship between population growth/density and LULC changes, and its socioeconomic influences. A post classification change detection method and Markov chain model of LULC change were used to analyze the past and future LULC dynamics. Administrative level census data of Kagera was used to calculate population growth and density, and these were overlaid to LULC change. The assessment of change for the period of 1984-2011 overall showed a major expansion of agriculture at the expense of woodland savanna. This was mainly attributed to demographic and socioeconomic/political changes prior to and during the study period. Population growth and density were linked to transitions to agriculture, and agriculture dominance during the study period. In addition, the oil price shocks of the 1970's that led to the adoption of Structural Adjustment Program were implicated as the major global macroeconomic influence in the use of resources, mainly in the agriculture sector. Internal policies such as Tanzania's "Ujama" villagization of production, and biophysical factors such as precipitation and proximity to water bodies were also implicated to the LULC changes. The findings in this study imply that understanding inter-relationship of factors is critically important, and the issue of LULC change must be approached in a holistic manner.

Book Environmental Variability and Management

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The work presented here aims to understand land use land cover change in savanna landscapes. Specifically, the ways in which savanna landscapes are managed and monitored, and addresses factors such as 1) the spatial and temporal patterns of change, 2) the nature of land cover change occurring, and 3) the underlying processes influencing these. I explore implications of landscape monitoring and management strategies employed in southern Africa, highlight challenges associated with such strategies, and explore the potential of new techniques in an effort to inform the management of savanna landscapes in southern Africa.

Book Spatio temporal Dynamics in Land Use and Habit Fragmentation in Sandveld South Africa

Download or read book Spatio temporal Dynamics in Land Use and Habit Fragmentation in Sandveld South Africa written by James Takawira Magidi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research assessed landuse changes and trends in vegetation cover in the Sandveld, using remote sensing images. Landsat TM satellite images of 1990, 2004 and 2007 were classified using the maximum likelihood classifier into seven landuse classes, namely water, agriculture, fire patches, natural vegetation, wetlands, disturbed veld, and open sands. Change detection using remote sensing algorithms and landscape metrics was performed on these multi-temporal landuse maps using the Land Change Modeller and Patch Analyst respectively. Markov stochastic modelling techniques were used to predict future scenarios in landuse change based on the classified images and their transitional probabilities. MODIS NDVI multi-temporal datasets with a 16day temporal resolution were used to assess seasonal and annual trends in vegetation cover using time series analysis (PCA and time profiling). Results indicated that natural vegetation decreased from 46% to 31% of the total landscape between 1990 and 2007 and these biodiversity losses were attributed to an increasing agriculture footprint. Predicted future scenario based on transitional probabilities revealed a continual loss in natural habitat and increase in the agricultural footprint. Time series analysis results (principal components and temporal profiles) suggested that the landscape has a high degree of overall dynamic change with pronounced inter and intra-annual changes and there was an overall increase in greenness associated with increase in agricultural activity. The study concluded that without future conservation interventions natural habitats would continue to disappear, a condition that will impact heavily on biodiversity and significant waterdependent ecosystems such as wetlands. This has significant implications for the long-term provision of water from ground water reserves and for the overall sustainability of current agricultural practices.
