Book Early Spanish Manuscript Illumination

Download or read book Early Spanish Manuscript Illumination written by John Williams and published by New York : G. Braziller. This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish culture is the result of many civilizations - Visigoth, Jewish, Berber, Arabic - which mingled with the traditions of the Romanized Celtic-Iberian population, once colonized by Carthage. Of special interest among Spain's artistic treasure are the manuscripts produced from the seventh through the eleventh centuries, especially those masterpieces which were decorated in the Mozarabic style (the term given to the Christians who lived in the Iberian Peninsula under Moslem rule). These manuscripts present a strange vision of the world with strong, deep colors that cover the picture with vibrant bands of green, red, yellows and violet, providing the background for monsters, tempests, human figures of every description, - all displaying an incredible virile mysticism, evoking a new ideal, the antithesis of the Classic which was to influence the art of the latter Middle Ages throughout all Europe, but which was anticipated in Spain by nearly two centuries. - Publisher.

Book Studies on Medieval Liturgical and Legal Manuscripts from Spain and Southern Italy

Download or read book Studies on Medieval Liturgical and Legal Manuscripts from Spain and Southern Italy written by Roger E. Reynolds and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it may not be immediately obvious why articles on topics from such distantly removed areas of western Europe - the Iberian peninsula and southern Italy - should appear in the same volume (the fourth collection by Roger Reynolds), the materials covered illustrate that they are indeed closely related, both in their differences and their similarities. Both peninsulas had their own indigenous liturgies and music (Old Spanish and Beneventan), distinctive written scripts (Visigothic and Beneventan), and legal and theological traditions, and repeatedly these worked their influence on other areas of western Europe. Although there were frequent attempts by the papacy and secular rulers from the 9th to the 13th century to suppress these distinctive traditions in both areas, elements of these nonetheless survived well into the 16th century and beyond. Despite the differences in these traditions, the articles in this volume also demonstrate through manuscript evidence the continued exchange of the distinctive customs between the Iberian peninsula and southern Italian cultures from the very early Middle Ages through the 12th century.

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 1486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEYOND his birth, of poor and respectable parents, we know nothing positively about the earliest years of Columbus. His father was probably a wool-comber. The boy had the ordinary schooling of his time, and a touch of university life during a few months passed at Pavia; then at fourteen he chose to become a sailor. A seaman’s career in those days implied adventures more or less of a piratical kind. There are intimations, however, that in the intervals of this exciting life he followed the more humanizing occupation of selling books in Genoa, and perhaps got some employment in the making of charts, for he had a deft hand at design. We know his brother Bartholomew was earning his living in this way when Columbus joined him in Lisbon in 1470. Previous to this there seems to be some degree of certainty in connecting him with voyages made by a celebrated admiral of his time bearing the same family name, Colombo; he is also said to have joined the naval expedition of John of Anjou against Naples in 1459. Again, he may have been the companion of another notorious corsair, a nephew of the one already mentioned, as is sometimes maintained; but this sea-rover’s proper name seems to have been more likely Caseneuve, though he was sometimes called Coulon or Colon. Columbus spent the years 1470-1484 in Portugal. It was a time when the air was filled with tales of discovery. The captains of Prince Henry of Portugal had been gradually pushing their ships down the African coast and in some of these voyages Columbus was a participant. To one of his navigators Prince Henry had given the governorship of the Island of Porto Santo, of the Madeira group. To the daughter of this man, Perestrello, Columbus was married; and with his widow Columbus lived, and derived what advantage he could from the papers and charts of the old navigator. There was a tie between his own and his wife’s family in the fact that Perestrello was an Italian, and seems to have been of good family, but to have left little or no inheritance for his daughter beyond some property in Porto Santo, which Columbus went to enjoy. On this island Columbus’ son Diego was born in 1474.

Book The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain

Download or read book The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain written by Norman Roth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain examines the grammatical, exegetical, philosophical and mystical interpretations of the Bible that took place in Spain during the medieval period. The Bible was the foundation of Jewish culture in medieval Spain. Following the scientific analysis of Hebrew grammar which emerged in al-Andalus in the ninth and tenth centuries, biblical exegesis broke free of homiletic interpretation and explored the text on grammatical and contextual terms. While some of the earliest commentary was in Arabic, scholars began using Hebrew more regularly during this period. The first complete biblical commentaries in Hebrew were written by Abraham Ibn ‘Ezra, and this set the standard for the generations that followed. This book analyses the approach and unique contributions of these commentaries, moving on to those of later Christian Spain, including the Qimhi family, Nahmanides and his followers and the esoteric-mystical tradition. Major topics in the commentaries are compared and contrasted. Thus, a unified picture of the whole fabric of Hebrew commentary in medieval Spain emerges. In addition, the book describes the many Spanish Jewish biblical manuscripts that have remained and details the history of printed editions and Spanish translations (for Jews and Christians) by medieval Spanish Jews. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval Spain, as well as those interested in the history of religion and cultural history.
