Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Athens, Sayre, and Waverly, the first pictorial history of the valley, Bonnie Stacy has created a nostalgic look at the picturesque communities where the Susquehanna and the Chemung Rivers flow together. Over 200 rare images from the late 1770s to the present chronicle the proud lumber, canal, and railroad traditions that first drew residents to this bucolic area. From the unique house photographs taken by local photographer M. Louis Gore to the unusual archaeological and historic photographs from the collection of the Tioga Point Museum, these images bring the past to life. In Revolutionary times, Tioga Point was the location of Fort Sullivan. Later, the area was settled by lumbermen, canal workers, and railroaders. Included here are painted portraits of the well-known founders of the settlements in the area, as well as those of everyday people--millworkers, shopkeepers, and bridge builders--who made their marks here and enriched their communities.

Book Raciolinguistics

Download or read book Raciolinguistics written by H. Samy Alim and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raciolinguistics reveals the central role that language plays in shaping our ideas about race and vice versa. The book brings together a team of leading scholars-working both within and beyond the United States-to share powerful, much-needed research that helps us understand the increasingly vexed relationships between race, ethnicity, and language in our rapidly changing world. Combining the innovative, cutting-edge approaches of race and ethnic studies with fine-grained linguistic analyses, authors cover a wide range of topics including the struggle over the very term "African American," the racialized language education debates within the increasing number of "majority-minority" immigrant communities in the U.S., the dangers of multicultural education in a Europe that is struggling to meet the needs of new migrants, and the sociopolitical and cultural meanings of linguistic styles used in Brazilian favelas, South African townships, Mexican and Puerto Rican barrios in Chicago, and Korean American "cram schools" in New York City, among other sites. Taking into account rapidly changing demographics in the U.S and shifting cultural and media trends across the globe--from Hip Hop cultures, to transnational Mexican popular and street cultures, to Israeli reality TV, to new immigration trends across Africa and Europe--Raciolinguistics shapes the future of scholarship on race, ethnicity, and language. By taking a comparative look across a diverse range of language and literacy contexts, the volume seeks not only to set the research agenda in this burgeoning area of study, but also to help resolve pressing educational and political problems in some of the most contested raciolinguistic contexts in the world.

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Levanna written by Jack Rossen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Levanna was a famous and well-visited archaeological site in central New York, along the eastern side of Cayuga Lake, during the Great Depression. It was primarily known for its spectacular animal effigies. But were they real or forgeries? Jack Rossen takes us on a journey through the 1920s and 1930s, the era of an outdoor museum, and professional attempts by the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) to suppress it. Larger than life characters include Arthur C. Parker, future President of the SAA, William A. Ritchie, future State Archaeologist of New York, and Harrison C. Follett, the entrepreneurial archaeologist. The book also takes us through the 2007-2009 re-excavation of Levanna and the related 2011-2014 excavations at the Myers Farm site. Along the way, Cayuga history is reinterpreted as more peaceful than previously believed, and the case is made for a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy more than one thousand years old. An older confederacy is more in line with oral traditions than previous archaeological ideas of a brief confederacy that began either just before or after European contact. The work was conducted through the framework of indigenous collaborative archaeology with leaders of the Cayuga and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The narrative approach includes stories of the contemporary people, both Native and non-Native, who protected the site, supported the research, and provided ideas, wisdom, inspiration, and friendship.

Book Linguistics and the Study of Comics

Download or read book Linguistics and the Study of Comics written by Frank Bramlett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do Irish superheroes actually sound Irish? Why are Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons funny? How do political cartoonists in India, Turkey, and the US get their point across? What is the impact of English on comics written in other languages? These questions and many more are answered in this volume, which brings together the two fields of comics research and linguistics to produce groundbreaking scholarship. With an international cast of contributors, the book offers novel insights into the role of language in comics, graphic novels, and single-panel cartoons, analyzing the intersections between the visual and the verbal. Contributions examine the relationship between cognitive linguistics and visual elements as well as interrogate the controversial claim about the status of comics as a language. The book argues that comics tell us a great deal about the sociocultural realities of language, exploring what code switching, language contact, dialect, and linguistic variation can tell us about identity – from the imagined and stereotyped to the political and real.
