Book Blood on the Boulders

Download or read book Blood on the Boulders written by Diego de Vargas and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 1282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having retaken Santa Fe by force of arms late in 1693, Diego de Vargas faces unrelenting challenges, waging active warfare against defiant Pueblo Indian resisters while maintaining peace with Pueblo allies; providing homes, food, and supplies for 1,500 unsure colonists; and bidding unceasingly for greater support from viceregal authorities in Mexico City. At the head of combined units of Spanish and Pueblo fighting men, the governor in 1694 leads repeated assaults on castle-like fortified sites. Through combat, prisoner exchange, and negotiation, he reestablishes the kingdom. Franciscans reopen some of the missions. Vargas founds the villa of Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Pueblos north and west of Santa Fe rebel again in 1696; wearily, Vargas reports more blood on the boulders. Through The Journals of don Diego de Vargas, translated from official and private correspondence, we are drawn back, through conflict and compromise, into New Mexico's formative era.

Book The Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1696 and the Franciscan Missions in New Mexico

Download or read book The Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1696 and the Franciscan Missions in New Mexico written by J. Manuel Espinosa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franciscan letters and related documents, translated into English and published here for the first time, describe in detail the Pueblo Indian revolt of 1696 in New Mexico and the destruction of the Franciscan missions. The events are related by the missionaries themselves as they lived side by side with their Indian charges. The suppression of the revolt by the Spaniards, and the reestablishment of the missions, was a turning point in the history of the Southwest. The New Mexican colony had been founded and settled in 1598 and had endured until 1680, when an earlier Pueblo Indian revolt had forced the Spaniards co retreat south co El Paso. In 1692, Governor Diego de Vargas led a military expedition into New Mexico that met virtually no resistance, convincing him that he could return and reconquer and resettle the region for Spain. In 1693, after a bloody battle at Santa Fe, the Spanish colony was reestablished in the midst of the concentration of Indian pueblos along the upper Rio Grande. It was then that hostile Pueblo Indian leaders, recalling their victory in 1680, secretly plotted the revolt that cook place in 1696. J. Manuel Espinosa has written a superb introduction placing the Pueblo Indian revolt of 1696 in historical perspective and presenting the important events recorded in the documents that constitute the major part of the book. The letters and writs, by mission friars and Spanish military authorities, reveal the agonizing decisions that the colony of priests, soldiers, and farmers faced in meeting the challenge of undaunted Indian leaders. The documents also contain information on the pueblos and Indian life not found in any other source. This book presents a remarkable view, from the Spaniards' perspective, of the clash of cultures in the pueblos, as well as insights into the causes and results of the Pueblo revolt. The documents contribute greatly to our knowledge of events in northern New Spain that proved very significant in the development of the region. No other work deals in such detail with this period in New Mexico history or provides such broad documentary coverage.

Book The Protector de Indios in Colonial New Mexico 1659 1821

Download or read book The Protector de Indios in Colonial New Mexico 1659 1821 written by Charles R. Cutter and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the provision for justice in Spain's colonies, perhaps the highest expression of idealism came in laws concerning the treatment of native peoples. Colonial authorities, however, often failed to uphold well-intentioned legislation. One notable exception, though, was in the work of the officials appointed by the Spanish government to represent Indians in legal matters--the protector de indios. Cutter provides in his study a valuable glimpse of the life of Native Americans as well as their dealings with various agents of Spain on her colonial frontier. The Indians in New Mexico, through the protector, gained entry to the Spanish legal system. On occasion, they even initiated litigation to uphold their rights. A key role played by the protector was vigilance toward Hispanic encroachment upon the pueblos' land. The impact of the protector's role remains a part of the Pueblo Indian legacy, for it helped to establish precedents that are crucial to the native peoples' ability to defend their territorial integrity today. This study is indispensable for all who are interested in the Indian and Hispanic cultures of the Southwest, and especially the clash of those two groups over land rights.--Jacket flap
