Book Design of Supporting Systems for Life in Outer Space

Download or read book Design of Supporting Systems for Life in Outer Space written by Annalisa Dominoni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rich source of information on design research and solutions for the support and development of space missions. International experiences and researches are presented in order to cast light on the role of space design in improving living and working conditions in outer space and to highlight the particularities of the necessary design skills, taking into account specific requirements and constraints. The challenge facing designers is how to approach environmentally extreme conditions in such a way that they are transformed from limitations into opportunities. The author has herself developed products that have been tested during on-orbit experiments on the International Space Station. Drawing on this unique experience and other case studies, the author proposes a new design methodology for space and demonstrates how the discipline of design is able to generate innovation thanks to the strong capacity of visioning. Ultimately this will lead to the development of further new equipment for astronauts that will facilitate space travel. While the book is intended primarily for students and researchers, it is also of interest for a broad readership attracted by space, innovation, and future scenarios.

Book Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report

Download or read book Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report written by Nasa and published by PDQ Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA commissioned the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) to conduct a thorough review of both the technical and the organizational causes of the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew on February 1, 2003. The accident investigation that followed determined that a large piece of insulating foam from Columbia's external tank (ET) had come off during ascent and struck the leading edge of the left wing, causing critical damage. The damage was undetected during the mission. The Columbia accident was not survivable. After the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) investigation regarding the cause of the accident was completed, further consideration produced the question of whether there were lessons to be learned about how to improve crew survival in the future. This investigation was performed with the belief that a comprehensive, respectful investigation could provide knowledge that can protect future crews in the worldwide community of human space flight. Additionally, in the course of the investigation, several areas of research were identified that could improve our understanding of both nominal space flight and future spacecraft accidents. This report is the first comprehensive, publicly available accident investigation report addressing crew survival for a human spacecraft mishap, and it provides key information for future crew survival investigations. The results of this investigation are intended to add meaning to the sacrifice of the crew's lives by making space flight safer for all future generations.

Book Strategies for Mars

Download or read book Strategies for Mars written by Carol R. Stoker and published by Univelt. This book was released on 1996 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-six essays written by workers in the space industry and interested lay people make a case for exploring Mars, arguing for the scientific objectives that could be achieved in the Martian "frontier" and even providing a cost and benefit analysis. The discussions suggest specific strategies in "getting there," flight profiles, and rocket designs utilizing nuclear electric propulsion. However, the questions remains--what happens when we arrive? In response, the authors speculate on life support, biomedical issues, transportation, and living spaces based on Biosphere 2 results. Lacks an index.
