Book Space Science in the Twenty First Century Imperatives for the Decades 1995 to 2015 Mission to Planet Earth

Download or read book Space Science in the Twenty First Century Imperatives for the Decades 1995 to 2015 Mission to Planet Earth written by Task Earth Sciences and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1984, NASA asked the Space Science Board to undertake a study to determine the principal scientific issues that the discipline of space science would face during the period from about 1995 to 2015. This request was made partly because NASA expected the Space Station to become available at the beginning of this period, and partly because the missions needed to implement research strategies previously developed by the various committees of the board should have been launched or their development under way by that time. A two-year study was called for. To carry out the study the board put together task groups in earth sciences, planetary and lunar exploration, solar and space physics, astronomy and astrophysics, fundamental physics and chemistry (relativistic gravitation and microgravity sciences), and life sciences. The findings of the study are published in seven volumes: six task group reports, of which this volume is one, and an overview report of the steering group. This report outlines a unified program for studying the Earth, from its deep interior to its fluid envelopes. It proposes a system of measuring devices involving both space-based and in situ observations that can accommodate simultaneously a large range of scientific needs.

To the board's good fortune, distinguished scientists from many countries other than the United States participated in this study.

Book Atmospheric Science at NASA

Download or read book Atmospheric Science at NASA written by Erik M. Conway and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2008 ASLI Choice Awards. Atmospheric Science Librarians International This book offers an informed and revealing account of NASA’s involvement in the scientific understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere. Since the nineteenth century, scientists have attempted to understand the complex processes of the Earth’s atmosphere and the weather created within it. This effort has evolved with the development of new technologies—from the first instrument-equipped weather balloons to multibillion-dollar meteorological satellite and planetary science programs. Erik M. Conway chronicles the history of atmospheric science at NASA, tracing the story from its beginnings in 1958, the International Geophysical Year, through to the present, focusing on NASA’s programs and research in meteorology, stratospheric ozone depletion, and planetary climates and global warming. But the story is not only a scientific one. NASA’s researchers operated within an often politically contentious environment. Although environmental issues garnered strong public and political support in the 1970s, the following decades saw increased opposition to environmentalism as a threat to free market capitalism. Atmospheric Science at NASA critically examines this politically controversial science, dissecting the often convoluted roles, motives, and relationships of the various institutional actors involved—among them NASA, congressional appropriation committees, government weather and climate bureaus, and the military.

Book Space Science in the Twenty First Century Imperatives for the Decades 1995 to 2015 Overview

Download or read book Space Science in the Twenty First Century Imperatives for the Decades 1995 to 2015 Overview written by Report of the Group and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past quarter century of space science has been extraordinarily productive. The United States has held the lead in space science during most of these years, exploring new worlds, discovering new phenomena in space, and providing new ways to observe and predict changes in the global environment. The national space science program has amply fulfilled the objective of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 to extend "human knowledge of the Earth and of phenomena in the atmosphere and in space." Moreover, it has contributed substantially to other objectives set forth in the act, including the development of space technology, the preservation of U.S. leadership in space, and the fostering of international cooperation. National investment in space science has produced a treasure of trained people and facilities that can continue to be productive far into the future. It is a perishable treasure, however, and is eroding rapidly with the present lack of scientific missions and the aging of academic facilities. For the past 30 years, scientific investigation has been neither the only objective of the space program of the United States, nor even the dominant one. The Apollo project and the development of the Space Transportation Systems, and more recently, of the Space Station were not primarily designed to respond to requirements set by the various disciplines of space science. Instead, establishing a human presence in space and accomplishment of large engineering projects for their own sake have driven a major part of our space program since the establishment of NASA in 1958. The steering group for this study recommends that the present ordering of priorities in the national space program be changed. The steering group proposes that, as the nation considers its future in space, the advance of science and its applications to human welfare be adopted and implemented as an objective no less central to the space program of the United States than any other, such as the capability of expanding man's presence in space.
