Book excerpt: "This was pure Flash Gordon space opera stuff, and the author kept the story moving at a fast pace with characters the reader will love." - Pulp Den Fans of Farscape and Killjoys will love the crew of the Ghost. Wil Calder was an astronaut testing Earth's first Faster Than Light engine in an experimental space pod when he ended up stranded on the opposite side of the solar system. Even if NASA could come to get him, they didn't know where to look. But that was years ago. Now, Wil is a lonely intergalactic outlaw and smuggler, looking for a crew, because space is lonely and boring. He's got a ship, now he needs some friends or at least people to work with, maybe boss around a little. What he isn't looking for, is a plot that would destabilize the entire Galactic Commonwealth. A scheme he and his new crew aren't remotely qualified to stop, but who looks at qualifications these days? They can't just turn their backs on the galaxy, can they? Between epic space battles, a quest for redemption and a daring heist, the crew uncovers a dangerous secret. If you tried to cross the Buck Rogers TV Show from the early 80's with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, you'd come close to the rollicking good fun of this classic space opera. Join the crew of the Ghost on the first of many fantastic adventures.

Book excerpt: This “expert and elegantly written” book reveals how dealers have been a major force in art history from the Renaissance to the avant garde (The Guardian, UK). Philip Hook’s riveting narrative takes us from the early days of art dealing in Antwerp, where paintings were sold by weight, to the unassailable hauteur of contemporary galleries in New York, London, Paris, and beyond. Along the way, we meet a surprisingly wide-ranging cast of characters—from tailors, spies, and the occasional anarchist to scholars, aristocrats, and connoisseurs, some compelled by greed, some by their own vision of art—and some by the art of the deal. Among them are Joseph Duveen, who almost single-handedly brought the Old Masters to America; Paul Durand-Ruel, the Impressionists’ champion; Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, high priest of Cubism; Leo Castelli, dealer-midwife to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art; and Peter Wilson, the charismatic Sotheby’s chairman who made a theater of the auction room. Full of unforgettable anecdotes and astute insight, Rogue’s Gallery offers “a front-row seat and a backstage pass to this arcane and obsessively secretive profession” (Hannah Rothschild, Mail on Sunday, UK).

Book excerpt: What happens when your experimental spacecraft breaks down near Neptune? Dying alone in space is the likely answer, right? That's not how Wil Calder's story ends though; it's how it begins. Alien space outlaws rescue him and sell his pod for scrap. He's given a choice: join the crew or step out the airlock without his spacesuit. Which would you choose? Now, years later, Wil is a lonely intergalactic outlaw, looking for a crew. Because space is lonely and boring, Wil could use some friends or at least people to work with, maybe boss around. Before Wil can even enjoy having a crew to call his own, they find themselves in the center of a plot to start an intergalactic war. They had no part in starting it, and aren't remotely qualified to stop it, but here they are anyway. Since finding a bar on a distant world isn't an option for Wil and the crew of the Ghost, they take action! Between epic space battles, a quest for redemption and a daring heist, the crew uncovers a dark secret. A secret that they can't let stay hidden; too many worlds hang in the balance. If you tried to cross the Buck Rodgers TV Show from the early 80's with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, you'd come close to the rollicking good fun of this classic space opera. Space Rogues is a sci-fi adventure that crisscrosses the galaxy; from one seedy spaceport bar to another, with secret gangster treasure depots in between. If you love & miss Farscape and Firefly, you'll enjoy following the crew of the Ghost on their adventures.

Book Rogues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Derrida
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780804749510
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Rogues written by Jacques Derrida and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rogues, published in France under the title Voyous, comprises two major lectures that Derrida delivered in 2002 investigating the foundations of the sovereignty of the nation-state. The term "État voyou" is the French equivalent of "rogue state," and it is this outlaw designation of certain countries by the leading global powers that Derrida rigorously and exhaustively examines. Derrida examines the history of the concept of sovereignty, engaging with the work of Bodin, Hobbes, Rousseau, Schmitt, and others. Against this background, he delineates his understanding of "democracy to come," which he distinguishes clearly from any kind of regulating ideal or teleological horizon. The idea that democracy will always remain in the future is not a temporal notion. Rather, the phrase would name the coming of the unforeseeable other, the structure of an event beyond calculation and program. Derrida thus aligns this understanding of democracy with the logic he has worked out elsewhere. But it is not just political philosophy that is brought under deconstructive scrutiny here: Derrida provides unflinching and hard-hitting assessments of current political realities, and these essays are highly engaged with events of the post-9/11 world.

They call her Beastly Beatrice. Wallflower Lady Beatrice Bentley longs to remain in the wilds of Cornwall to complete her etymological dictionary. Too bad her brother’s Gothic mansion is under renovation. How can she work with an annoyingly arrogant and too-handsome rogue swinging a hammer nearby? Rogue. Scoundrel. Call him anything you like as long as you pay him. Navy man Stamford Wright is leaving England soon and renovating Thornhill House is just a job. It’s not about the duke’s bookish sister or her fiery copper hair. Or the etymology lessons the prim-yet-alluring lady insists on giving him. Or the forbidden things he'd love to teach her. They say never mix business with pleasure. But when Beatrice and Ford aren't arguing, they're kissing. Sometimes temptation proves too strong to resist…even if the cost is a heart.

Intent on nursing Martin back to health, Will kindly kidnaps him and takes him to the countryside to recover, well away from the world. Martin doesn’t much care where he is or even how he got there. He’s much more concerned that the man he’s loved his entire life is currently waiting on him hand and foot, feeding him soup and making him tea. Martin knows he’s a lost cause, one he doesn’t want Will to waste his life on. As a lifetime of love transforms into a tender passion both men always desired but neither expected, can they envision a life free from the restrictions of the past, a life with each other?

Book The Assumption of the Rogues and Rascals

Download or read book The Assumption of the Rogues and Rascals written by Elizabeth Smart and published by Fourth Estate. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, and widely considered to be the sequel to her masterpiece 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept', this remarkable book further established Smart's reputation as a brave and inspirational writer. A still beautiful woman, 31 years old with four children by a faithless lover, cannot break the habit of expectation. She must learn to submit to the cold, bare, unglamorous tenets of reality - the untenable position of love. She must learn to deflect Grand Passion into an acceptance of the rogues and rascals with their radiant faces, who buy her a bitter with borrowed cash. Out of a passionate youth, through pain and harsh revelation, she has attained a maturity - a certain knowledge that the cost of rapture is high and that there is no looking back. Hers is a voice that distils a woman's determination for survival - a voice that rises up from everyday life, from the bus queue, the Underground, the pub - and in Elizabeth Smart's hand is wrought into something magnificent.

Book The Magic of Rogues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Klaassen
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2021-02-19
  • ISBN : 0271089547
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book The Magic of Rogues written by Frank Klaassen and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1510, nine men were tried in the Archbishop’s Court in York for attempting to find and extract a treasure on the moor near Mixindale through necromantic magic. Two decades later, William Neville and his magician were arrested by Thomas Cromwell for having engaged in a treasonous combination of magic practices and prophecy surrounding the death of William’s older brother, Lord Latimer, and the king. In The Magic of Rogues, Frank Klaassen and Sharon Hubbs Wright present the legal documents about and open a window onto these fascinating investigations of magic practitioners in early Tudor England. Set side by side with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts that describe the sorts of magic those practitioners performed, these documents are translated, contextualized, and presented in language accessible to nonspecialist readers. Their analysis reveals how magicians and cunning folk operated in extended networks in which they exchanged knowledge, manuscripts, equipment, and even clients; foregrounds magicians’ encounters with authority in ways that separate them from traditional narratives about witchcraft and witch trials; and suggests that the regulation and punishment of magic in the Tudor period were comparatively and perhaps surprisingly gentle. Incorporating the study of both intellectual and legal sources, The Magic of Rogues presents a well-rounded picture of illicit learned magic in early Tudor England. Engaging and accessible, this book will appeal to anyone seeking to understand the intersection of medieval legal history, religion, magic, esotericism, and Tudor history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centaurus was the destination of the space ship The Hope of Man. It had been traveling through space for almost twenty years, and still nine years of flight remained before Centaurus would be reached. For many on board the craft Earth had become a vague memory, while for others it was a mere dot in the vast starry reaches of space. Restlessness was evident everywhere; the people wanted to return to a place they knew was inhabited -- not continue to an unknown where life was questionable. Mutiny seemed inevitable. Captain Lesbee knew that mutiny bred mutiny, but what was more vital was his knowledge of Earth's possible obliteration. The one hope was Centaurus. Now more than ever, there could be no turning back. Order had to be maintained even at the price of human life. On this interspace voyage, the greatest hazards are not the forces of an unknown scientific world, but man himself.
