Book excerpt: Jack Campbell returns to the world of the New York Times bestselling Lost Fleet novels with an action-packed military science fiction series that explores the founding of the Alliance...and the men and women who fought to create it. Earth is no longer the center of the universe. After the invention of the faster-than-light jump drive, humanity is rapidly establishing new colonies. But the vast distances of space mean that the old order of protection and interstellar law offered by Earth has ceased to exist. When a nearby world attacks, the new colony of Glenlyon turns to Robert Geary, a young former junior fleet officer, and Mele Darcy, a onetime enlisted Marine. With nothing but improvised weapons and a few volunteers, Geary and Darcy must face down warships and armored soldiers—or die trying. As battles rage and pirates take an increasing toll throughout the colonies, the only hope for lasting peace lies with Carmen Ochoa, a “Red” from the anarchic world of Mars, and Lochan Nakamura, a failed politician. They have a plan: to lay the groundwork for mutual defense that could someday grow into an alliance. But if their efforts don’t succeed, the growing power of aggressor worlds could turn regions of space founded on freedom into battlefields between the first interstellar empires....

Book Large Deviations For Performance Analysis

Download or read book Large Deviations For Performance Analysis written by Alan Weiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1995, Large Deviations for Performance Analysis consists of two synergistic parts. The first half develops the theory of large deviations from the beginning, through recent results on the theory for processes with boundaries, keeping to a very narrow path: continuous-time, discrete-state processes. By developing only what is needed for the applications, the theory is kept to a manageable level, both in terms of length and in terms of difficulty. Within its scope, the treatment is detailed, comprehensive and self-contained. As the book shows, there are sufficiently many interesting applications of jump Markov processes to warrant a special treatment. The second half is a collection of applications developed at Bell Laboratories. The applications cover large areas of the theory of communication networks: circuit switched transmission, packet transmission, multiple access channels, and the M/M/1 queue. Aspects of parallel computation are covered as well including, basics of job allocation, rollback-based parallel simulation, assorted priority queueing models that might be used in performance models of various computer architectures, and asymptotic coupling of processors. These applications are thoroughly analysed using the tools developed in the first half of the book.

Download or read book Action Stations written by William R. Forstchen and published by Baen Books. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THEY PLANNED ON A NICE WAR There had been a century of peace, and the politicians of Earth and its colonies were running on platforms of cutting “wasteful” military spending—all while Earth’s military tried to keep aging and obsolete ships flying and battle-ready. And while the swords rusted, war clouds gathered on the horizon… Contact had been made with the Kilrathi—a warrior race feline in appearance and deadly in combat. Yet, even though they had annihilated or enslaved scores of other races throughout the galaxy, and had attacked human colonies on the border worlds, the government was not taking them seriously, thinking that the Fleet could handle them with ease. Commander Winston Turner knew that the government was moving toward a declaration of war against the Kilrathi in response to demands from the border worlds. He also knew that the Fleet would be forced to operate under Plan Orange Five: limited action and punitive responses only. He only hoped that mankind would recognize its mistake before it was too late.

Download or read book Planar War written by WANG JINKANG and others and published by EWAYBOOK. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will future wars be fought, in what spaces, and which countries will have the capability to engage in such wars? These are the questions that people are most curious about and explore the most. The First and Second World Wars are distant from us, but will a Third World War really happen? There are reports suggesting that Hawking predicted the timing of the Third World War, roughly around 2035. Will Hawking's prediction of the Third World War come true? Science fiction writers have always had many imaginative ideas about future wars. What kind of sparks can be generated from the collision of science fiction and military concepts? "Two-Dimensional Warfare" collects science fiction stories that imagine future wars, aiming to provide a feast of future war fantasies for military enthusiasts and sci-fi fans. Two-dimensional beings invade the three-dimensional Earth, and humans are surprisingly not their match! In comparison to our world, chemical bonds in the two-dimensional universe are more unstable, making the use of chemical energy more natural and convenient. Under my observation, the little beings created the first engine driven by chemical energy—the "Industrial Revolution" had begun. Later, a powerful bomb was detonated under the feet of a beast that threatened their survival. Subsequently, I saw the appearance of transportation tools similar to cars on paper, and soon, two-dimensional airships appeared. Following that, two-dimensional transistors, two-dimensional programmable calculators, and various two-dimensional intelligent machines emerged. Gradually, I realized that my knowledge level could no longer keep up with their pace...
